Blizzard gauging players’ interest in another Diablo 3 expansion

Are you “not at all,” or “extremely interested” in playing a second expansion to Diablo 3?

Blizzard is asking Diablo III players how interested they would be in playing a second expansion to the game.

The question popped up in a survey Blizzard sent to some Diablo III players. Most of the questions were about the player’s gaming habits, but a NeoGAF user grabbed a screenshot of the relevant part of the survey, which asks players to rate their interest in another expansion on the scale you can see above.

Another Diablo III expansion certainly sounds logical given the success of the recently released first expansion, Reaper of Souls, which shifted 2.7 million units in its first week on sale.

Diablo III itself has racked up over 15 million sales since its launch in 2012, with that figure including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions alongside the Mac and PC. That means roughly a fifth of all Diablo III owners have purchased Reaper of Souls, and the expansion will make its way to consoles later this year.

I would be ok with a second expansion as long as it included these fixes:

- RANDOM MAPS (Big One for Me) : Maybe a toggle-able option for this in case there are those that appreciate playing on a set map all the time *shutters furiously*

- SKILL TREE brought back like in Diablo 2. I had forgotten about the skill tree. Was bummed they only had 4 interchangeable skills with 5 runes. Although this idea was cool, I didn't like how they removed like 20 others skills/spells in the process.

- MORE CLASSES. Miss having a necromancer! I loved building him as a fighter/necro.

- LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST always on connection. Not as big of a deal to me as the top 3 above but would like to see something done about this.

They should keep pumping out more expansions until they are reading for the next big novel(Chapter whatever) of Diablo(Diablo IV). They seem to be doing pretty well. Not totally perfect but in Blizzard quality IMO.

I don't know. How much do they feel like making the classes people actually want instead of 5 nobody asked for? Paladin a step in the right direction but how soon until we get a Druid or Necromancer? How about bringing back the original team? How about actual random levels? What's their commitment to making a decent game instead of a mediocre game and slapping "Blizzard" on it?

I'm very interested. Now can I has a shapeshifter class, blizz? Pretty please?

After trying the game, I have to say I hated the leveling and character customization systems. I loved the skill tree in Diablo 2, even if you couldn't use more than 2 at a time. Also the synergy system they added in a patch after a while made it totally worthwhile to grind and level up lower level skills. That and the runewords as well added more to the experience and made it fun. The sequel is more dumbed down in these aspects, in my opinion.

My main complain about blizzard games is that they never use the current techonology to make games. Diablo 3 looked outdated before it was even released while free to play path of exiled looked better.

I understand their approach with the artistic graphics like the windwaker that will still look good in years to come, but just once i'd like to see what they can do in that department.

It's strange that Blizzard should have to resort to a marketing survey to find out how numerous and happy the customers of their Always Online game currently are. Surely they should be able to look at RoS's sales numbers, or their current unique logins per day/week/whatever, and tell how many players bought in for their 1st expansion? Because that's their market for a 2nd expansion. Did RoS's sales crater after launch week, or something?

Game got alot better then when it first launched, it was literally unplayable esp if all you wanted to do was play the campaign with a few close friends - lags, disconnects, and no service. Months later the game was much more playable but the constant blind invites, auction house, and community chatter, and of course lags and drops was a pain. You know, that is a shame because this is a damn fine game, it is just all this extra shit they have added really brings it down. I mean in the history of video games, has anyone remembered, wow -I wish they would reduce content.

Now the console version is awesome, we hooked up 3 boxes, to a router. No lag, no drops, not chatter and we could all sit in the same room enjoying a RPG game that does not force useless always online. Only complaint of the console version was the graphics were not as crisp as the cpu. I just finished a cpu monk storyline on expert, and would have love it, except for the same dumb problems related to always online.  One day the whole eastern side of the country was having sick lag and latency spikes. Downtown time maintenance was too frequent, why does a RPG need maintenance. And a few nights of just weird lags, that everyone on community complained about. Also some guy kept trying to invite me wanting to power level me, gag.

If the next-gen console versions forgoes the 'always online requirement' and allows friends to LAN 4 boxes together, then no question the console versions will be far away the definitive copy to get. I mean continues to not require the game to be online.

One other oddity that is weird, I have a gaming router, and port priority for my cpu and consoles. I am old and this is an enjoyable hobby but also I work on a lot of other things.  During console xbox play like, MW3 you will use 5mb to 20mb per hour depending if you have chat on what chat you are using party/private/community, and to a lesser degree what type of game MP, Dom, etc. But Diablo 3 will use 20-40mb and sometimes more per hour. EVen WOW does not use that much. And alot of times d3 will have lag spikes from 40ms to 600ms for no reason, which others in community will complain, and during those times it will use even more bandwidth per hour.

I found this while checking latency, thinking it was my router and broadband. Since d3 has no voice, it should in no way be pulling data back and forth so much. Besides saves (which i would prefer to be on the cpu side) community chat and dungeon layout is all the data that should be transferring.  IT literally makes no sense at all beside the huge amount of money through metadata collected on its customers.

The skill tree system is what you call an "illusion of choice". Path of Exiles skill tree is SOOO cumbersome and you can really mess up your character by making a couple stupid choices. The best part about POE is the gem customization, the skill tree sucks. Diablo 2 had a bunch of "optimal builds" that the majority of players followed. Sure, there were players that didn't follow these builds, but their characters were way less effective. Diablo 3 gives you plenty of choice on skill customization and nearly every skill is actually useful unlike DIablo 2/POE. The problem with Diablo 3 is THE MAPS ARE NOT RANDOMIZED ENOUGH. The story and atmosphere is also terrible compared to the old games, no sense of dread. Overall, ROS is a quality expansion and if you don't think so you haven't played it enough.

I'm already hopelessly addicted to World of Warcraft and have been for several years now, I don't think starting another Blizzard-made electronic smack addiction is wise at this point.

I've become a much bigger fan of this game since the update (like most people). However I have mixed emotions about a second expansion:

1) I don't think there should be a new level cap. Grinding to level 70 gets boring at times when you've gone through the story a couple times and several adventure mode bounties. If the levels go to 80, then people are going to complain and Blizzard may be tempted to do a pay option for players to level from 1-80 like they did in WoW. That would really suck.
2) I would LOVE, however, to see an Act 6. This would make the current leveling system a little less boring. Blizzard should really give a huge bonus to the art team for their map design because the level design on these maps look amazing!

3) I would also kind of like to see a 7th character. However I don't know what type of character that would be since we currently have 2 int chars (Wizard and Witch Doctor), 2 dex chars (Demon Hunter and Monk), and 2 str chars (Barbarian and Crusader). I feel that this may bring an imbalance to one particular type of loot but maybe Blizzard can figure all of that out.

4) Lastly, I think that $40 is to high of a price for an expansion. LoS MAY have been worth it since it added in adventure mode, however unless there is something comparable to that in a second expansion. I wouldn't expect anything higher than $30 for it.

As long as the content is substantial and worth its price, expansions are a good alternative to over-milking a franchise with sequels.

hahahaha, you mean would I like a second expansion to a game I uninstalled after 2 weeks? D2:LoD was a classic. PvP was solid, you could do cow levels and baal runs for leveling and loot. Meph runs for solo MF. Who wouldn't want a successor to this amazing game? Oh wait, you mean the max level is 60, and there is no exp decay? There is no real customization between classes, such as attribute points or skill trees? oh wait you MEAN I CAN BUY MY FUCKING GEAR OFF AN AUCTION OFF THUS DESTORYING THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE GAME? haha yea, I did not buy your crappy RoS expansion, and will not buy a second expansion.

Will the first expansion be made for the 360 version?

I want to play it. Heck, I want to play the first exapnsion. But I can't.

Only way I'll be spending money on any of these expansions is if they allow the game to be played offline.

Hated Diablo 3 like everyone, kept saying "But a turd's a turd!".

They really nailed it with 2.0 & RoS, for those D2 vets who still hates D3 it's simple, just think of it as a different game but has awesome gameplay, that's what a friend of mine told me.

toffifee

After RoS, YES! I went from playing it a few hours per month to many hours a day. I can't really say why except that sending Auction House to hell was the best thing ever and the new loot system is awesome.

I dont like online games, so i didnt buy D3, so i couldnt care less if they make 50 expansions for it and if D4 ever comes out and its an online game, i wont buy it either.

If Blizzard really care about their Diablo fans, they should expand the game with patches instead of selling $40 expansions.

If Blizzard's key interest is juicing out as much money as possible out of Diablo 3, I suppose micro-transactions is a much more effective way to go. For example, $20 to unlock a new class, $20 to unlock a new act, $10 to buy a new skin, new pet, new mount, etc.

Merex760
Merex760

I don't really care either way. The game is pretty messed up beyond repair, they'll never be able to recapture what made Diablo 2 great. If Path of Exile had the spell animations and gameplay of D3, it would be a superior ARPG in every way possible. Not having a competitive element whatsoever, bad loot, and an auction house really hurt this game right out of the gate.

@jack00  I felt the same way. Until my GeFocer 680GTX started to give me low frame rates with 4 players nuking 50 enemies on screen with flashy spells. Then it crossed my mind, Diablo is not tuned for single player with reasonable pulls.

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@Bryjoered07  I did not mind the lack of 'dread' in the story line as it always seemed the protagonist always had the bad guys on the run, or at least the antagonists seemed surprised we kept kicking their ass which does not make a good story but a good power rangers episode. I would have preferred more interactions and dramatic exchange between the companions histories and the main story line. For instance: the scoundrel's brother had a part to play in whatever city, keeping or helping us from a goal. The enchantress, her past became a big part in helping to traverse heaven, etc.

Maybe third installment can resolve: SPOILER ALERT!!

Adriana and her mother, maybe include some companion storylines to their conclusions. The atmosphere was fine, appropriate to the storyline, but the storyline could have been bolder, game of thrones bolder.

@nixxin25  Well if WoW does it for you, that is well and good. But i find many different games to be much more satisfying, though more expensive.

@nixxin25  I feel you ! I'm already thinking about what toon i want boosted to 90 for the expansion !

jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@smokeless_0225  I think something that can be added as an expansion would be to break in between ACTS, or during an act and involve a companion quest line, like meeting or helping or being helped by the scoundrels brother in that large town. Following the templar back to his order and questioning them or obliterate them. May have to change some slight text dialog but it would make going through the acts again, different.

@Hagan  You should consider reinstalling the game and giving it another try. It is much better than it used to be. The auction house is gone and there is more loot now. The leveling system still is not as good as Diablo 2, but at least the game is fun now.

TheChosenOne_NL

@tennebrae  You mean like patch 2.0 and greater rifts and such which are doing already? Stop hating if  you can't come up with at least good arguments. Diablo 3 was always good and now its great since 2.0/RoS. And yes I've played thousands of hours of D2. :)

@tennebrae If Blizzard cared about their fans they would scrap Diablo 3 and start again.

@PurpleMan5000 @Hagan  Take off your Nostalgia goggles. RoS is a completely better game than the vanilla release. I also unistalled D3 a week or two after purchasing day one as well. But when I seen the forum posts about how RoS actually made the game better, I came back and grinded two characters to solo'ing T1 rift levels, dropping all other games in the process and it was amazingly fun. Some of the best money I've spent in the last 6 months.

And the stuff you're complaining about makes you seem very ignorant..

Paragon allows you to level past the new level cap of 70 awarding you stat points that you can allocate in a very balanced manner.

Bounties and Rifts are fun ways to gear and level even for new toon rolls but most will powerlevel not to waste legendary drops on the way.

This game has far more customization with builds, period. Runes and a pltehora of skills trumps anything D2 has and being able to switch on the fly makes it that much better.

and yeh.. what that guys said no AH.
