Big in Japan Nov. 9-15: J-League Pro Soccer Club

Sega dethrones Winning Eleven with its own footie sim for the PSP; Sony's portable, PS3 nearly tie at top of hardware chart.

by

Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven 2010 (Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 internationally) opened big in Japan for the week of November 2-8, shifting some 217,000 units. One week later, and a new soccer game has worked its way to the top of Media Create's weekly sales chart; this one with a decidedly Japanese bent. For the week of November 9-15, Sega's J-League Pro Soccer Club o Tsukurou! 6: Pride of J on the PSP scored big with 84,966 units sold.

If only the cover coach was as excited as the cover text.

Beyond J-League, the mid-November week had a number of charting debuts. Namco Bandai scored with Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, as the PlayStation 3 edition secured third with 57,972. Square Enix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers for the Wii, which is due in North America on December 26, opened in eighth with 35,412 units sold. Capcom's Mega Man Battle Network: Operation Shooting Star on the DS debuted in ninth with 22,744 copies.

Meanwhile, Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver continued its strong sales run on the DS, landing in second with 62,744 units. Tomodachi Collection, Wii Fit Plus, World Soccer Winning Eleven 2010, and Inazuma Eleven 2: Threat of the Invaders - Fire/Blizzard reprised their positions on Media Create's chart, landing in fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh, respectively. Persona 3 Portable for the PSP rounded out the week's list in 10th with an additional 17,360 units sold.

A heated race ensued for top hardware platform for the week, as the PSP's 38,770 tally just edged out the PS3's 38,498 units sold. The DSi finished the week with 33,749 units sold, while the Wii shifted 26,764 systems. Sony's compact PSP Go sold 6,427 units, while the DS Lite shifted 5,036 units. The Xbox 360 maintained its plodding pace with 4,124 units on the week, while Sony's workhorse PlayStation 2 shifted 2,031 systems.

I'm still convinced that people who go and scream low sales numbers are forgetting these are one -week- results and the consumer base is about half the size as the US... and pre-ordering is a lot more rare in a country with lots of small boutiques everwhere or next-day shipping is often free for orders in the Kanto region. On Sundays! I'd kill for that. The Japanese gaming industry is also waaaaay less dependent on life-stopping pop culture PR'd-to-death game releases seen elsewhere seen here. Pretty much there are but 2 games that can pause society like that, and one happens to be coming up in about 2 weeks. Oh, and the PS3 overcame what was a very small X360 total sales number very quickly. Microsoft slashed price and tried to put out RPGs, and apparently a lot of buyers are ashamed with themselves, given all those RPGs are being brought over and that Bluray is an incredibly large % of the market compared to the US. Microsoft developed a big push that probably took a few years to plan... and it ended a mess.. outsold 8-10:1 depending on the week.

I doubt that OSS' english name will be Megaman Battle Network:Operation Shooting star... but, I just hope CoA will translate it and sell it in NA

PSP #1 in Japan? Now that's a shocker. I mean, I love the PSP but I never expected to see that. It probably won't last. The PS3 on the rise, that is much less a surprise. If the PS3 had come out costing what it costs now, or even $400 instead of $600, the Xbox 360 and perhaps even the Wii would probably have been outsold by it from day one.

I've allready got a wii. And I've been very happy for it. The problem is, that many don't make good games for wii. They tend to think a kiddy game sells better at Wii. I'm going to buy a PS3 next week, because it has got cheaper.

wii and DS is for casuals. its a no brainer that theres more casuals in the world then hardcore gamers.......... @ tajirinere instead of changing their name maybe if microsoft made a better console and exclusives it would help. you got one thing right though, their bias........they actually think before they buy unlike other regions.

@ SalarianChemist like it or not, its guaranteed that at the end of this generation ps3 sales will be higher then xbox sales. its the price that WAS putting people off........no doubt what so ever that quality wise, PS3 is the best option. xbox has been on last stand for the whole of 2009 but god of war and gran turismo 5 will put it out its misery in early 2010.

guessing by the fact that possibly every gamer there already got a Wii and Ds and that Final Fantasy 13 is released there in a month, this isn't suprising, looks like they are getting ready for it PSP is for Persona games being released fanboys here need to calm down and look at some facts

@SalarianChemist dude try not to make every single comment you make about the xbox! but i have to agree with you, in the time they lunched the ps3 it was only a blue-ray player, but now it has MGS4,U2,Killzone2(these are my favorite games in this gen)

Software sales in Japan are incredibly low for any time of year. And hardware sales in Japan are very low for this time of year during the holiday shopping season. It's also very obvious that the Wii sales have in fact leveled off and are in great decline. I think Nintendo saw this coming, because we've heard rumors of the Wii HD console being released in 2011 or 2012 for some time now. Last year the Xbox 360 was outselling the PS3 in Japan thanks to all of those awesome JRPG games that launched exclusively on the Xbox 360. From the summer of 2008 until the end of 2008 the Xbox 360 had outsold the PS3 in Japan thanks to Tales of Vesperia, Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4, and The Last Remnant. Each time one of those games was released we saw a huge spike in Xbox 360 sales. Microsoft knew the Xbox 360 wasn't going to be the top-selling console in Japan due to the fact that the Japanese are always reluctant to purchase foreign products. The simple fact that the Xbox 360 reached the sales milestone of 1 Million units is incredibly impressive! This better-than-expected sucess of the Xbox 360 in Japan has positioned the next Xbox console in Japan to be in a much more competitive position from the time it launches, and Xbox will be a brand with a wide base of supporters when it launches in Japan. Games like Final Fantasy will launch simultaneously on the next Xbox in Japan, which will mean the next Xbox will be even more successful in Japan.

@HydeSpeed: I apologize. When I was scanning the list I didn't see PSP Go, and I assumed that they had combined them with the PSP.

@Iamprey and Dissidiaauron Atlus is usually pretty good about bringing their stuff over here, It's probably just a matter of time at this point, especially since it's sold pretty decently over in Japan. I just hope they wait until quarter 2 though. Quarter 1 is just way to crowded with good stuff.

LOL! @ drangel_jam's comment, it's called a different culture, deal with it. It doesn't equal depression, it equals different tastes.

@itsTolkien_time: Except for the fact that if you combine PSP and PSP Go sales, it still outsells both DS SKUs.

looks like the 360 is just dying in Japan its been at less than 6k no matter what multiplatform/exclusive game came out for the system for a couple of monthes. It'll take a miracle to save the 360 in JAP (no not Meracle from SO4 she already saved the 360 for 1 week :P)

Microsoft should change their name to Microsoft-kun, maybe they'll sell better in this 'unbiased' market

Ouch at Crystal Bearers. Rather impressive numbers for Persona 3. 3 weeks in the top 10. Most niche titles like that usually fall off in a week. I think that might be the game that makes me pick up a PSP when it comes stateside. Decent opening for Raging Blast. I'm very interested to see what sort of numbers the DS LL is going to pull next week. I think PS3 might take home the console victory this holiday.

yeah monson21502 they don't want the rrod there in japan and it's one thing that they're missing.. hahahahha

By separating the DS Lite and the DSi, they have prevented it from being in first. If you add the two into one total DS score, you get 38,785, which actually puts it 15 units ahead of the PSP for this month. That's a close one.

I sometimes wonder why we westerners even bother releasing games over there. There's not much of a profit and it's a bit unfair that their games sell so well over here when western games have just as good of quality as Japanese games. It would be interesting to see how well Nintendo's sales would be without America.

So not only do they hate the "American-designed" 360 over there, but they choose PES over "Canadian-designed" FIFA 10. Can't say I'm surprised...
