Big in Japan: Gundam Wars storm PS2, Wii

Superdeformed strategy game takes top spot from Monster Hunter Tri, Dragon Quest IX; new Tingle game for DS lands in ninth place.

by

Monster Hunter Tri's stay atop the Japanese software sales charts was a brief one. After selling more than half a million copies in its debut, Capcom's action role-playing game slipped to second place for the week of August 3-9, with 137,093 sold.

All the destructive power of an exploding sun, and all the hugability of a Beanie Baby.

Replacing Monster Hunter Tri as the best-seller of the week was SD Gundam G Generation Wars for the PlayStation 2, which racked up sales of 175,304. The latest installment in the superdeformed turn-based strategy series features characters and mech suits from dozens of Gundam series. A Wii edition came in eighth place, selling 35,084.

Those weren't the only new releases to hit the charts for the week. Effete Zelda character Tingle returned for another adventure on the DS, which sold 33,498, good enough for ninth place. Namco Bandai's PSP game Tales of Vs. grabbed fourth place with 133,706 sold, offering fans of the company's Tales series of role-playing games a chance to mix it up with their favorite characters in a fighting game. Finally, Kamen Rider: Climax Heroes for the PS2 took seventh with 51,740, while Konami's J-League Winning Eleven 2009: Club Championship scored sales of 33,378, sneaking just inside the top 10.

In hardware news, the DSi reclaimed the top slot on the charts, selling 70,066 units. After its one-week stint at the top thanks to a new black-hued system and Monster Hunter Tri launch, the Wii slipped back down to second with 47,140 sold. On the other end of the charts, the Xbox 360 sold 5,436 systems following the Japanese releases of Gears of War 2 and Magna Carta 2. That was just a few hundred units behind the PlayStaiton 3's 5,826-unit haul.

Its refreshing to see handhelds so popular in Japan. I only wish that it was like that here in the UK. And also nice to see the PS2 after all these years still making it into the top 10.

Ps3 close to the bottom again. That final fantasy demo helped for a little while anyway.

Wow, how do PS3 owners and X360 owners spell fail in Japanese? I think this is a real shame for Sony though. With their new generation system on the market for almost three years, they should have at least one game on their home turf in the top ten one would think. Where are all the hardcore gamers to drive up those hardcore numbers and making their hardcore systems number 1 because that would be hardcore don't yolu think?

The DS out sells the Xbox360 and PS3 in the states as well (as far as total units sold goes). Oh, and before you fan boys give me a thumbs down, why don't you try looking it up?

I'm surprised the 360 almost beat the Ps3 for a change lol.

OF-5 you're right, the 360 does generally sale poorly in Japan, but currently so does the PS3. The only decent selling systems in Japan right now are the DSi, Wii, and PSP, with even the old DS Lite trumping the PS3 and 360.

SD Gundam I hate it they should make one without the SD

please this isnt a bash on Sony or anything but i am kind of surprised that the PS3 and 360 are really that close i was under the impression that the 360 sold poorly in japan.

Looking at this list makes me realize that I am just not into japanese games! The only Japanese game that right now Im looking forward to is FF13! Hopefully that game makes up for the lackluster over sea games!!

I know that nobody agrees with me but I want that TINGLE game to come here so badly

But it shows that this generation has essentially flopped in Japan. The handhelds dominate and even this late in a PS2 game is top of the charts.

This proves that casual games don't always sell better. Monster Hunter dominated the Wii market =)

PS2 is really the best console ever put out to date in terms of lasting power. Really unbelievable.

Well, no PS3 title is kinda of surprising. But no 360 is not surprise. 360 hardly even exists in Japan.

What a telling sign with no 360 or PS3 title in the entire Japanese top 10...

@Gooshnads, I have to agree with you that I entirely despise the casual gaming nonsense that Nintendo has created, despite myself being a Nintendo fanboy and refusing to jump ship under any circumstances. Personally, I'd like to see Nintendo go all out on WiiHD with all the money they're making off of the 'casualists', and say screw 'em. I can't really say go back to former glory, because that would mean taking a step backwards technology-wise. Rather, acquire newfound glory. HD Smash Bros, SMG, Metroid, Zelda, and everything else under the sun. Hell, 720p HD would be pretty damn acceptable. I honestly think that if Nintendo at the matched the 360 in terms of processing power, GPU's, etc., or at least came close with the Wii, then put in Motion control, Nintendo would've decimated the competition, with a much healthier selection of core games for us...and amused the casualists with cat toys. Motion control may be starting down the wrong path to improve video games, but it's not too late. It can be fixed so we'll be playing Ocarina of Time in VR rather than PETZ HORSEZ

MegaXtreme

The PS2 version outsold the Wii version by a longshot LMAO! I just got a PS2 back in my room, and it's already getting more play time than my Wii.

Gooshnads
Gooshnads

it does piss me off how DSi is selling so damn much even though its like NO different from the DS Lite except a piece of camera stuck on it I really do dislike the whole "Casual Gamer" thing because now games hardly have ANY challenge to them... Games used to have a good learning curve, now nintendo's dominating with gimmicks

Id like to know the number of DSis sold world wide. I wonder if (x) years from now the DSi will become the dominant Nintendo portable.

what GOW2 + Magna Carta 2 came out in JAP just now? we only get a 1st trailer in Eng in April and now its released in Japan. Yes im a bit slow, but I thought GOW2 had a world wide release on NOV 7, o well. Strange last week's release of GOW2 barely budged the 360 out of last place.
