Big in Japan Feb. 14-20: Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Catherine

PS3 and Xbox 360 editions of crossover fighting game storm Japanese sales charts, but adulterous Atlus RPG tops the list, more than doubling next best-selling title.

The ongoing Marvel vs. Capcom feud will likely go down as a draw, but on the Japanese sales charts, round one of the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 vs. Catherine fight was a decisive victory for the Atlus role-playing game. Media Create today released its Japanese sales figures for the week of February 14-20, showing the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the anime-styled RPG easily besting sales of Capcom's crossover fighter in the games' opening week.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was the second best there was at what it did for its Japanese launch week.

The PS3 version of Catherine topped the charts with 141,826 sold, more than doubling the 67,187 sold by the week's runner-up, the Sony console edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. That dynamic repeated itself later on in the charts, with the Xbox 360 version of Catherine finishing seventh with 21,936 sold, beating the 13,779 copies sold by the eighth place Xbox 360 edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Created with the assistance of renowned Japanese animation shop Studio4˚C (Tekkonkinkreet, Halo Legends), Catherine follows a man in the midst of a potentially deadly relationship crisis after cheating on his longtime partner Katherine with the young and sexy (but mysterious) Catherine. No Western release for the RPG has been announced.

Two more new releases made the charts, with the open-world Western-styled RPG Two Worlds II landing in sixth place with 24,324 copies sold. Meanwhile the latest installment in Idea Factory's increasingly prolific Hakuouki romantic adventure series, Hakuouki: Zuisouroku DS, made it to ninth place with 13,373 sold.

With PS3 and PSP games claiming the top six spots on the chart, it's no surprise that Sony's handheld and console hardware continued their run atop the hardware standings. The PSP added 63,330 new systems to its installed base, with the PS3 picking up 25,242 new owners. The Wii held on to third place with 12,221 systems sold, despite a rare week without a representative game in the top 10.

Charts like that are the reason a lot of japanese game dont see the day on x360. Now the fact that Catherine beats MVC3 by that much, really surprised me, I hope the hype is real. Just learning today that It is getting a release in N-A on both Ps3 and X360, I'm already sure to buy it.

@monson21502 Because in Japan adoption of HD TVs is slow and most gamers are teenagers. Parents don't want them hogging their only TV and portable systems allow for easy multiplayer experiences.

It hurtS me to say this, but Japanese sale charts are becoming more and more pathetic. Seriously, the top ten has fewer and fewer overall sales, and keep they only become more and disparate. I do enjoying learning possible games that may be released later on in the West. Other an that, the Japanese VG industry current affairs makes me more sad than happy (consistency, game genres, sales of native and foreign games, x360, PS3, J-developers, etc...).

Its good to see Catherine has sold well. Which means a higher possiblity of Persona 5 being a PS3 game (and hopefully a 360 game for Xbox faithfuls).

@wiidsduelpack haha, oh wow. It's funny that you would even compare them that said, dead space is a simplistic shooter, that attempts a horror element, but isn't scary Bioshock is so-so, but easily one of the most overrated games through the last ten years. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a japan-fanboy, but what you said is preeettyyy damn silly

IdolConverge

@ wiidsduelpack Dude, they are completely different games in completely different genres, there's no proper way to compare them, so don't make blind assumptions.

This game looks ridiculous. No mention of gameplay or anything like it... Just sheep and boobs. Get a life.

Dead Space and Bioshock are probably better than Catherine. Japan is so far behind the West

Not surprised Catherine to be honest :? Thought read Atlus have said "No Catherine For Foreigners, its to stay a Japanese only release" Sengoku Musou 3 (Samurai Warriors 3) for PS3 I want :D hope it comes out, outside of Japan.

I did read a article about Catherine in a Game Informer magazine. It looked interesting, and is supposed to be a little edgy, so it would be nice to see it make it's way to the states.

The WIi is long gone. No title can save it now. PS3 will win.

Sad to know that the PSP continues to dominate in Japan yet Square Enix continues to ignore giving the platform a Dragon Quest game.

Very excited about Catherine. I just hope Atlus can spare us Western gamers some misery and announce a Western release date soon.

Xbox 360 sold over 2000 units! We are slowly adopting the Japanese market! Once they join Xbox Live they will be hooked!Seriously, it is sad to see how little of a impact the American brewed console has over there. Microsoft won't give up though, and they will continue to press the issue, I just don't know that they will ever be able to get a foot hold in that region.

Catherine seems very interesting. I hope this title gets a great rep from word of mouth just like Demon's Souls did & makes its way over here in the states. That'll b the only way it'll make its way over here.

Catherine must be a good RPG. I've not familar with the source material. So it would be safe to say that this game will not make it to the U.S.A. To Japanese for the west to get the story.

japan has very diverse taste in gaming. why can't people accept this? I'm america and all we ever play over here and gets the most advertisement is another lame sports game/call of duty clone.

glad to see atlus made some money off catherine. shame the 360 version didn't sell well but what do you expect the ps3 version already had the demo out and atlus fans usually buy games on the ps2 or ds. i doubt that many own a 360 when this is what their 2nd game thats not even part of a series released on there?

shadowysea07
shadowysea07

@ChaosDynasty thats because they lowered the price. why do you think the psp is up in sales? because they had a price drop. price drops + bundles = huge sales
