Big in Japan Dec. 28 - Jan. 3: New Super Mario, Zelda DS, FFXIII

Iconic plumber's latest outing sells 268K; Wii and DS dominate software charts, combining for eight of top 10 best-sellers.

Earlier this week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Japanese media that the Wii had recovered from its momentum-sapping malaise, crediting a stronger software lineup for jump-starting the system's sales. The current star of that lineup is unquestionably New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which rang in the New Year atop the Japanese sales charts.

From left to right: Utter chaos. Not pictured: Actual teamwork.

According to Media Create's weekly Japanese sales figures, New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold 268,212 copies from December 28, 2009, through January 3, 2010. The four-player side-scrolling platformer handily beat out Nintendo's resident Tamodachi Collection for the DS, which came in second with 185,502 copies sold. Rounding out the medal podium was another Nintendo effort, as 126,303 gamers were "all aboard" for The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the DS.

Games for Nintendo systems dominated the charts for the week, taking eight of the top 10 spots. Only a pair of role-playing games were able to break into the charts, with Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 landing in fourth with 111,705 sold, and Sega's Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP slipping into ninth place with 44,344 sold.

Things were a little more competitive on the hardware side. The Wii was the best-selling system of the week, as Nintendo's console added another 163,855 to its installed user base. The PSP and PS3 took second and third on the hardware charts, selling 132,911 and 114,368, respectively. The DS line of systems accounted for the next three spots on the charts, with the DSi notching another 92,461 sales, the DSi XL claiming another 70,643 users, and the legacy DS Lite selling to 17,388 presumably camera-shy gamers. The PSP Go continued to struggle, selling just 3,903 systems for the week.

@MSG-Deathscythe I think if the PSP Go was starting at $200.00 it might have sold well but for $50 dollars more you can get a PS3 with all the PSN content of a PSP Go and much more or a PSP3000 + 16gig memorycard for about $220.00 and still get all the PSN content of a PSP Go and a UMD drive. Also if the UMD require paying for a UMD and shipping to the store you buy it from why is the download more expensive? If the download doesnt require shipping or buying it with data storage it should cost less.

Not trying to sound like a fanboy but the 360 sales in Japan are a lot lower than I had expected.

@faramir77 I am not going to mark your message down, but I would just like you to make clear as to how Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Twilight Princess, Excitebots have been insulting for you? If you are talking about shovel ware, let us not forget NES, PSONE, PS2. Wherever you have a top system, you see it. You see it more on Wii because the makers of shovel ware know that Nintendo has tapped into an audience that is unfamiliar with the practice. However, there are fantastic games that in terms of hardcore (No More Heroes we find out the final boss is the former gf (as well as half-sister) of the protagonist who was sexually abused as a minor and sold her body to raise funds for her revenge). You are kidding yourself if you think you have seen things on the PS3 and X360 as half as twisted as Madworld (butt-first impalling anyone) The thing is, that blaming Nintendo for shovel ware is on the same level of intelligence as blaming Borders for bad books and bad music. It is the same argument that has been waged since day one of this generation, but it has no merrit, for if it did, the Wii would be at the bottom of the list.

Meh no thanks, Sony. I'm more acquainted to my original PSP for now.

Not surprising the Go isn't doing much. What were they thinking?

I think it's a shame how the PSP rarely gets any attention these days. We barely get told of the games, nowadays. I don't own it, but, loads of games on it are worth it. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is at the top of the list, bloody excellent. I'm not being sarcastic, it's truly a Godly game. It's the best Wii game since Brawl, and considering how Brawl is a masterpiece, that's saying a lot. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver is still on the list. That, in retrospect, isn't a bad thing. But it probably won't last long in other countries, but it'll brilliant when it comes out here. If anyone has an Australian Release Date, you have to share, or you'll make Pikachu cry.

PSP Go, Isn't the best Idea, which is the main reason why I got a 3000 for Christmas. Sony has to understand that people are going to be drawn away from the Go simply because, the system it self costs more money, and you'll have to buy extra memory sticks to put games on, in which you have to buy for full price for. Heck I've practically paid no more then 20$ for my psp games, due to store specials. Why bother spending more money then you need to.

The psp does not fail >_> 56mil is very impressive for the only handheld competiting against nintendo. The only time people make the psp sound horrible is when you compare it to the nintendo Ds sales. Psp would do very well if sony add a second analog stick i gurantee you a lot of people would buy it then 1 stick thing turned a lot of people off. Sorry to say i find nintendo games repetitive although nothing will ever dominate pokemon on handhelds sorry to say its just to addicting

FFXIII, Pokemon HG/SS, Phantasy Star, are probably the only three I would of gotten out of that list. But that is an interesting list though O.o.

screw that. i was going to buy a psp go when heard about them, then i heard the price and thats all she wrote. no way im dropping cash on that and whats worst is there is a rumor that sony will be releasing yet another psp called the psp 4000 or psp 2. i've this long, looking like im waitin some more. this time hoping they make it a portable/controller for the ps3. remember dreamcast and how the controller had a lil display. image that but now the controller is the psp. image playing madden and being able to pick ur plays on the psp - this way your when your going head to head on the couch your buddy cant see what play your picking. or do what the DS does for most of its games - the psp could display the map on a game like gta or ur inventory on game like demon souls without you ever having to press start. all the while still being the portable device. dont mine me this is jus my idea of the perfect psp.

@formerroadie I'm not wrong for my statement. I put it like this, Everyone has tried McDonalds before, and they will always have an insane amount of costumers, but with any well educated costumer you eventually realize McDonalds isn't going to be enough for you and so you want better. Don't get mad at me, get mad at the statistics, this website had posted several articles before on how Wii Owners clock in the least gameplay hours a week compared to the other 2 systems, just as well as Wii owners own the least games compared to the other two systems. So I say again Nintendo has become the McDonalds of the gaming industry. Sure everyone has had a taste, but after they realize that's there's better tasting things out there, they will consume that more and more. @ nate1222 Don't be so sure on Tatsunoko VS Capcom staying exclusive for long. Remember Capcom has a strick policy on all their games going multiplatform, the problem with the Wii is, since it's mechanics aren't true Next Gen it can't handle the games that are coming out for 360 and PS3, so Capcom gives it it's own special attention, but that doesn't mean that Wii games can't transfer over to 360/PS3. And sure enough once the sales of Tatsunoko VS Capcom bomb on the Wii, it will re-release on XboxLive and PSN, it's not going to happen anytime soon though, not until the SSFIV storm settles. Nintendo might have some good exclusives too, but if the game isn't published by Nintendo, then it won't sell good. Look at MadWorld, The Conduit, GTA: Chinatown Wars just to name a few. I'm confident that TVC won't sell, but whatever, I'll be playing it on PSN later this year anyway.

The problem I see with the PSP Go is it is over priced. You cannot have a portable system thats costlier than a flipping XBOX 360 elite. No wonder no one's buying it.

This chart is silly really. Nintendo actually easily claimed 1st and 2nd, if you add up all of the DS sales it actually nearly comes to 180,00. That's 50,000 more than the PSP. But then again it is really annoying having all these different versions of the DS on the market. Just think this ranking gives the wrong picture of what is actually being sold.

nate1222
nate1222

@faramir77 That's why I like Nintendo. I don't want every damn game to be hyper-masculine-macho bs. is there a swath of "gimmick-ware" on the Wii? Yes. But there's also some pretty cool exclusives: Tatsunoko Vs Capcom (heir to Marvel Vs Capcom 2's throne), RE Remake (superior to the original), BRAWL (no need to explain)... And the Virtual Console line-up keeps getting better and better with Nintendo's back catalog of classics. Is the Wii as good as PS2? No. But it's heir to PS2's throne. That's obvious. And i agree with most people that the DS is a better platform. This generation (7th gen) in general is no where near as good as last gen. That's not just Wii, it's PS3 and 360 as well.

New Super Mario Bros Wii and Spirit Tracks were both really good games. Nintendo did well that week in Japan, but let's be honest. The Japanese worship Nintendo. Here in Canada/USA we've come to realize that Nintendo isn't the same company anymore. Sure, they make a handful of good games, but the Wii has truly been an insult to their original core audience. As a huge Nintendo fan, I'm severely disappointed in the Wii. Now time to wait for extreme Nintendo fanboys who believe the Wii is just as hardcore as the 360 or PS3 to come and mark this message down. I don't mind; every thumbs down I get is a monument to an individual's blindness. Stop kidding yourself, Nintendo is no longer a hardcore company.

Why are we missing 2 weeks of "Big in Japan" artices? Mostly I'm just curious on the FF13 totals over 3 weeks after, but reading 1.7M the first week (I think it was here, somewhere) and it still actually selling would suggest over 2 million shipped, not inculding consoles with. That would be almost a 50% saturation of -all- PS3s in Japan. I figure Mario is about on that ratio as well and just looking to compare. Either/both are ridiculous sales numbers.

nate1222
nate1222

Yeah... I'm going to break down and get a Wii. NSMB Wii and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom have my undivided attention. And the VC line-up is getting enough good games (that I DON'T already have on my SNES) to justify it. I already own, and love, the DS. Nintendo, y'all win my consumer dollar. Congrats.

@SDBusDriver1979 I'm pretty sure they're slowly learning from their mistakes. :P I do agree that there's a lack of advertising good games, if that's what you're pointing out as well.

SDBusDriver1979
SDBusDriver1979

@Kleeyook Because Sony is Sony and they do whatever they want. Never learning from past mistakes like why the Sony Mylo was a commercial disaster. Didn't do any decent advertising or explanation of the device to the unwash huns to the west. And lastly the company refuses to yield to any company, investor, consumer, and reviewers' advice on the device which could of fix some fundamental problems with the system. In a lot of ways the PSP Go is the Virtual Boy of our generation.

Why did they make PSP Go in the first place? It can't play UMD disc and the memory inbuilt is just too little (16GB) compare to PSP games' size. :( And FFXIII sale last week is understandable. Since it's sold more than 1M copies on the day it launched. :P

I would like to see the stats of how many Japanese business men from Sony had to commit suicide over the PSP Go sales :) Seppuku is their only option to save what little honor they have left. As for FFXIII, I have to agree with ChaosXero that selling well over 1.5 million to the user base in Japan is a success. I am sure they will reach their goal of 2 million sold in Japan.

I can't help but laugh at those PSPGo sales. I mean, come on. You can't remove a feature (UMD drive) and expect to sell a redesigned model at a more expensive price. Come on Sony, the PS3 has really hit it's stride now, but the PSP still has a lackluster amount of AAA titles released each year. Thank god for PSone game support, or I'd barely use mine at all... :(

Kravyn81 ___ Actually, when PS2 would routinely sell more than PS3 back in 07, that was worth more of a laugh. Probably buying PS2 because they keep disc read error'ing, and Sony charges 60 bucks to adjust a laser, so may as well get a new one. edit: also, PS2 outselling it in 2007 was world-wide, not regional

FF 13 sold well initially because of all the fans who would've bought it no matter what it was like. Then people started to find out it really wasn't that great of a game; it's more like an extremely linear interactive movie. Bad word of mouth has really hurt its sales and it's showing now.
