Bethesda opens office in Australia

Publishing office in Sydney will oversee sales, marketing, and distribution for all Bethesda games in Australia and New Zealand.

by

Fallout and Elder Scrolls publisher Bethesda Softworks today announced the establishment of a new publishing office in Sydney, Australia to be known as ZeniMax Australia Pty Ltd.

The office will directly oversee sales, marketing, and distribution for all Bethesda titles in Australia and New Zealand.

It was not announced how many people will be employed at the office and a Bethesda representative was not immediately available to comment.

"The establishment of ZeniMax Australia underscores the importance of the growing Australian market as well as the company's continuing commitment to the Asia Pacific region. ZeniMax also has operations in Hong Kong and Tokyo," the company said in a statement.

As part of the opening of Zenimax Australia, the company has named Simon Alty as managing director for the new territory. Previously, Alty was managing director at One to Another Pty Ltd, an Australian communications, marketing, and business development company.

Bethesda has three major titles planned for 2014, including The Elder Scrolls Online, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and The Evil Within.

GameSpot parent company CBS CEO Leslie Moonves is a member of the Zenimax media board of directors

I still get frustrated that every publisher whores themselves out to EB and sells games at 2x the price so that the 'shelf' price and digital prices are the same.

Bethesda can basically do no wrong as DEVELOPERS in my opinion but I've never seen a game publisher stand up to EB and sell games without an artificial markup.

Its quite simple that if they do undercut EB, EB will refuse proper shelf spacing and basically blackmails them into a lower sales number.

I suspect that they'll lump NZ in with the Australian Classification Board rulings if/when this comes to fruition. :|

"The office will directly oversee sales, marketing, and distribution for all Bethesda titles in Australia and New Zealand."

Translation:
"The office will directly oversee desperately trying to convince the ratings boards not to ban Bethesda titles in Australia and New Zealand."

So now when people ask, Bethesda can no longer say that they don't go down under.

Awesome. Though I don't live in Australia, I am always happy to hear about job creation in this business. :)

@s_h_a_d_o Bethesda games haven't had any trouble (to the best of my knowledge) getting into Aus so us Kiwis shouldn't have to worry too much.

@gilldominic

NZ has it's own classification system, and is far more lenient [read, sensible] than that of Australia - this announcement however, may bode ill for future releases here.

@GreenReuben

Fallout 3 got kicked back, until Bethesda modified game code - interestingly, those changes were applied to all versions globally.
