Batman: Arkham Knight for Xbox One, PS4, and PC Delayed to 2015

Rocksteady pushes anticipated action game to next year because, "We just want to make this the best experience that we can."

This year's big Batman game, Batman: Arkham Knight, is now next year's big Batman game. Warner Bros. announced today that Batman: Arkham Knight for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC has been delayed and is now expected to launch sometime in 2015. Previously, the game was scheduled to launch this fall.

Why the delay?

"We just want to make this the best experience that we can, and that takes time," Rocksteady Studios marketing manager Guy Perkins told GameSpot. "We feel that we have an absolutely awesome game in the works, and we want to make it as great as it possibly can be. We just need more time to do that. If we didn't give the team more time to do it, then we would be releasing something that we weren't happy with. We want to make sure we're absolutely nailing it 100 percent."

Batman: Arkham Knight is skipping the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, instead coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. According to Perkins, Rocksteady's full vision for the game could not be realized on last-gen hardware

"The Batmobile is one thing we just couldn't do on previous gen. It's not just a case of having a car, it's a case of building a city where the car feels at home," he said. "So if we were to try and bring the Batmobile into Arkham City, for example, the streets aren't conducive to that driving experience. You have to create a much bigger environment to house the vehicle."

"Gotham City is five times larger than the game world of Arkham City." -- Guy Perkins

"Gotham City is five times larger than the game world of Arkham City. And by virtue of having a bigger city, you need more memory and more horsepower to just make that happen," he added.

Not only that, but the detailed character models for Batman: Arkham Knight would be too much for last-generation hardware, Perkins said. "The details on the models we have is insanely huge at this moment--the detail on Batman alone is phenomenal," he said. "Having these current-gen platforms [Xbox One and PS4] allows us to really flex our muscles in terms of art and animation, and we're building everything to make it look as good as it possibly can. The beauty is our engine team can now say yes to our artists; before they were always struggling with what they have available. But now it's more a case of, 'What can't we do?' and, 'Where can we push it even harder?'"

Asked if the technical performance for Batman: Arkham Knight would be the same for the Xbox One and PS4 versions, Perkins said, "We have a benchmark in mind, and we want to give gamers the best experience. We are optimizing at the moment; it's always a challenge, but we want to get to the best place."

They want to make the game longer depth story and update the graphics, that's why postpone to 2015

Rocksteady's vision can't be fully realized on current gen hardware either lol. Weaksauce city.

This is why I don't understand why they had to announce a release date if they were not sure about it. Just say something like "2014" or "2015", then when your damn sure about it give us the actual date!

Except this to be a thing in the future.  Announce a game, get pre orders and lots of hype, delay the game by a few months and still keep the pre orders and much hype.  At least a delayed game as a release date so perhaps publishers will start doing this to try and get people more excited about their games then their competition.  If there is any good thing about yearly franchises though it is that this kind of thing probably won't happen to them.

if thats the case for the Delay then why didnt you just let everyone know about the batman game later , i think this is what these game devs are doing  , they seem to be crating a hype with all these delays, even watdogs did the same thing , . if your gonna keep such a long delay then dont let people know about the game before hand and before a year of its release . sucks to wait . i dont calll  this a delay i call this a hype .

Not really surprising. Destiny is out in September any ways so I  won't need many other games to play.

I'm okay with the delay, but I'm not okay with this annoying trend of what appears to be publishers slapping a highly optimistic release date on a high profile game, only to have it delayed. If everyone in the dev studio knows they can't reach that deadline, why put a date on it in the first place? I'd rather wait 10 months with a TBA status than be swindled into expecting a product to be ready only to have it pushed back later down the road.

I understand, and while my wallet will be glad, I am a bit sad by this news...Now when I get a PS4 its JUST for Destiny...1 damn game till 2015 lol.

Honestly, who didn't see this one coming?? I sure as hell did, seems like all the big triple-A games are delayed these days. If this adds to the quality of the game though, I'm all for it. Get rid of the bugs and glitches, and release it in a polished state.

I really want this game (it is why I bought a PS4) but if they need more time to iron out bugs or add content, I will wait. I don't want another Arkham Origins (yes different company but they rushed that game).

The Witcher 3, Quantum Break, The Order and now Arkham Knight all to look forward to during the new year.... With Halo 5, Battlefront 3 and Uncharted 4 most likely to hit in the winter.... I'd be happy with just those games

If delaying games is better for their overall quality, then that's fine.

But Watch_Dogs was delayed, and look what happend to it.

ANOTHER GAME DELAYED?! THAT'S THE 6TH ONE!

The Division. Dying Light, Halo 5, The Order 1886, Mortal Kombat X and now Batman Arkam Knight.

Why I'd pay over $500 again? Destiny is the only "System worthy" game coming out so far. If it get's delayed, we won't have hardly anything to play...Except for COD. But COD is just COD. And everthing else is...whatever.

I guess all the more reason to own a Wii U...Ugh.

Well that sucks. I was planning to pick up a PS4 when this one came out.

Oh well. Plan B; buy one now.

It works out for me since I can't yet afford a new PC anyways. :)

So I pretty much have AC, Destiny, and Evil Within to look forward to for the remainder of the year...that is until Destiny gets pushed to 2015 :(

Well, if Watch Dogs is any indication, a lengthy delay does not always ensure a quality product. Just imagine how crappy the build must have been when the PS4 launched if the quality of Watch Dogs is so poor today even with all the extra time given.

Cool. I still have to finish AC and AO.

Something tells me they're waiting for ps4 and xbox one to have a bigger install base before they release this.

So anybody want to place bets on if Destiny gets delayed? Seems that's one of the few left that will come out this year.

Just further proof that the smartest move a console gamer can make is wait until 2015 before purchasing a PS4 of XB1. It was the same way with PS3 and 360, there's just not enough good games in the first year of a new console's life cycle to justify a purchase.

Now I really, really regret getting a PS4.

Should have just upgraded mah PC..

I'm starting to think that developing for consoles 1st made developers lazy and less skilled than the old developers that did PC 1st. Most of these guys can't develop games on these 2 underpowered sh it boxes without a year delay.

straightcur

Bwahahahaha.  Is anyone surprised by the delay?

But seriously, i'm worried this is focusing too much on the Batmobile.  It's cool and all, but I don't want GTA with missiles and a Batman skin. Just like Watchdogs turned out to be GTA with a cell phone.

The best thing about 2014 is all the games delayed for 2015.

Rocksteady did the same with Arkham Asylum(the last delay was at least 6 months iirc) and I believe that delay resulted in a better, more polished, well received game. Most of you guys moaning about the delay of AK would be very infuriated if the game came out this October with technical problems like what Arkham Origins had.

This seems to be the thing/trend now with like every game to push back the release dates on games. To me that isn't right to get peoples hopes up then say the release date got pushed back. Why don't game companies give a release date that atleast a year longer than it they think it will be released so people won't lose interest in a game, and then surprise people with a 6 months early release date. That would be better than what they are doing now which is pathetic.

Just wanted to get out of the way of Lego Batman. Smart move.

NOOOOOOOOOO I appreciate what they're doing though, making sure that the game is ready instead of pushing it out quickly

I always see posts about how x company should've delayed y game so it wasn't buggy and could be "more polished".  Now Batman gets delayed and the comments are filled with "blargh!  I can't take it anymore!"

Richie_Kotzev
Richie_Kotzev

@toddx77 The more we wait, the more we expect, and if anything feels wrong about the game after releasing, we would say: you guys even delayed the game. so, if they are delaying, I believe they have an even greater responsibility to make it as good as possible.

toddx77
toddx77

@Chunkman I think this is being done now to get people excited and know that the game is almost done so they will go pre order it and be thinking about the game.  Then later announce the delay by a few months but the pre orders will still be there and the game will still be on peoples mind more compared to a game with no release date.

While 2014 has been a tad underwhelming, 2015 is shaping up to be perhaps the best gaming year for a long while. I I can't wait!

Actually developing on PC is easier than a console. You get to set your own requirements and they can allow users to change settings. Console requires devs use a specific set of hardware and get the most out of it. They can't tell you to buy a better video card or more RAM.

Papa_Big_C

@straightcur It won't be GTA w/ Batman.  I'm pretty sure he won't be able to run over/harm civilians on the street or kill baddies with missiles.

delta5931

@straightcur Well, Rocksteady has said that the game WILL feature both gliding and car play. The car will, no doubt, be very versatile. You will need it.

@karenwen  Maybe they should stop announcing games so freaking early. Wait until closer to release and you actually know what the game is and will look like.
