"Back to basics" first-person shooter Rekoil coming to XBLA Jan. 29, PC Jan. 28

The competitive, class-based first person shooter will release on Steam and XBLA at the end of January.

Publisher 505 Games will release developer Plastic Piranha's debut game Rekoil on PC, Jan. 28, and on XBLA, Jan. 29. The Xbox version of the game will be published under the name Rekoil: Liberator, 505 has told Polygon.

Plastic Piranha describes Rekoil as a "back to basics" first person arena shooter set in a world devastated by a pandemic. The developer said that it's inspired by games like Counter-Strike. Instead of offering the type of progression and weapon unlocking you've come to know from the Call of Duty and Battlefield games, you start with a selection of 40 different weapons to choose from, all of which are finely balanced to allow the best player to win.

At launch, Rekoil will feature 10 maps, seven game types, five customizable classes, and modding tools for the PC version.

You can pre-purchase the game now from Steam for a 30 percent discount, down from $14.99 to $10.49.

Will it allow local multiplayer with computer-controlled players? That was one of the best things about Battlefield 2 back in the day.

"To its roots". Hehehe... These guys have no idea about where the roots of FPS genre is.

I like how the headshot they show in the alpha the guy stiffens up like a cartoon character getting hit on the head and falls over like a toppled board lol only thing that would have made it funnier is if he would have rolled and bounced around like that lol

if anyone is looking for a good FPS, thats CS style, check out Combat Arms. Its free, theres a ridiculous amount of weapons to choose from, tons of maps, game modes. Its a hell of a lot better then this garbage i just watched

judging by the steam reviews, this game is a mess right now.

I'm not bitching, i'm just stating the facts.

"Going back to basics" yet you included ironsights? Seems quite strange to me.

Reason i prefer Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is not only because it has dedicated servers, but because it has no damn health regen or ironsights. Now i don't know if this game has health regen but i'm pretty definitive that it has, since that's how they've dealt with the health system in modern games everytime. I'm way more looking forward to Cliff Bleszinski's next Unreal Tournament-like FPS which he has talked about. Because that is completely different. Seriously. This is another god damn military FPS. How many of those are there already?

Why won't anybody ever make a multiplayer shooter, like COD, but instead use a little more sci-fi into the mix. I know Halo loosely defines this, but I mean unique characters that aren't human, and unique weapons that are just fantasy.

These games now are a dime a dozen and just try to replicate real war atmospheres. It all feels like "same old, same old". Are developers afraid to 'break the mold'?

Why anyone would prefer this to CS, Titanfall, Battlefield, Team Fortress etc is beyond me. Doesn't add a thing to the MP shooting market.

>Back to Basics shooter
>You start with 40 different weapons to choose from right off the cuff
>Customizable classes
>B-but it's balanced to let the most skillful player win!

...What the fuck am I reading? How is this back to basics? Does this studio have any idea what they're talking about? "Basic" competitive first shooters should be like Quake, or even Halo for God's sake (no, not that god awful abomination Halo 4, I mean the original trilogy) - Arena Shooters. You all start with the same gun/guns, and have to fight other players to reach static, yet strategically placed weapons, explosives, ammo, health kits and more. The moment you mention "customizable classes", you've already shat all over the concept of a "back to basics" shooter. Even MORE so when I can pick my own weapons on the fly, whenever I want, without any form of restriction (like in Counter Strike, for example. Yes, that game had multiple weapons that you could pick and choose from, but only if you earned enough cash from killing other players, completing objectives, or stealing them from fresh corpses. That made sense). It made for a much more frantic fight when you and 3 other people are all fighting over the same weapon pick up. I understand why the want to add customization to the available class archetypes (it adds depth, and encourages you to try all the available weapons, thus increasing the playability of what I can only assume to be a Multiplayer only game. A medic with a Shotgun for example. Someone's hurt, and you're healing them, when some punk sneaks up on you? Blast him in half before he can get 2 easy kills, then go back to patching up your partner), but if that's the case... DON'T CALL IT A BACK TO BASICS SHOOTER! Just call it what it is- a competitive, class based online shooter.

I swear to god though... If they add in regenerating health, sprinting, or "Iron Sights" I'm REALLY gonna lose my shit.

As if there isn't enough fps already, here come more shovelware.

And why should we care? There doesn't seem to be anything to make this stand out. This seems like a solid title but it's just same boring modern weapons bazillion other FPS games use, and it just looks like CS. Making a game deliberately like old titles with old mechanics is not really a good way to make games, it's just trying to overly rely on the nostalgia. There are indie titles that are simple and work like older games, but they do new things with an old concept. This doesn't seem to do anything new.

Trendy FPS or just more of the FPS trend? They all look the same to me...

Back to basics? You mean CoD wasn't simple enough already?

Walk around and shoot other people, in a boring environment, using boring weapons. THAT'S IT.

Get ready!!! For yet another generic shooter!!!! That is sure to be lame!!! And everybit as unoriginal as any other shooter out there!!! But with a twist!!!! This game literally tells you that it's not trying to do anything new!!!

Yeah, this will be horrible.

Twisted14

Hmm, not sure about this. I honestly don't think it will do all that well. If people want a more classic FPS style, they could just play CS, which is already pretty cheap and is fully polished, balanced and has an established community.

I think it's a good thing to release a shooter without all the progression systems that most games have nowadays. I just don't see it performing well if it's not going to be very cheap or straight up free to play.

'Back to basics' huh? Inspired by games like Counter-Strike?

I saw none of that in the trailer. It looks like another Call of Duty clone, but dropped the weapon progression.

@max-hit Well, they said they were inspired by Counter-Strike....which of course was a mod for the original Half-Life.

Half-life was built on a modified Quake engine.

Quake was made my Id...

...and Id Software you can thank for your avatar....

So...maybe not directly to it's roots...but pretty close.

:P

That doesn't mean it will be any good though....there is no shortage of shitty shooters out there....

@LiquidOcelot145

Agreed.

I think these guys are as off from knowing "back to basics FPS" as the Alien Rage guys (Citi Interactive?). They thought it's old school when you have hard difficulty and still every health regen sprint ironsight with linear leves and kneehigh jumping.. Seriously. Kneehigh jumping in an "old school FPS" (Alien Rage)? Apparently these Plastic Piranha guys think it's back to basics if you can mod a game and have dedicated servers. Man it doesn't look too good..

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@LiquidOcelot145 Yeah you are right. I do think that will be because some of the things that were in the original FPSs simply would not stand any more. And some of them are for the best for what I can see.

You say you will lose it, if they add regenerating health, yeah I can get that, I don't like shooters with crap tonnes of health anyway. Sprinting, I'd rather have sprinting than a character that is so fast it is almost like they are constantly sprinting or worse a character that is too slow. Iron sights, makes it more realistic, better than everyone running around in circles trying to hip fire each other. Just as examples.

Besides on PC you can probably join lobbies where those things are disabled if you want.

vduong942

@Fabian85 no dude, 505 published payday 2, they didn't make it. uninformed people these days giving developers no credit.

@snakebite6x6x6 This game is more likely to have its inspirations from COD and not from CS (Just take a look at the gameply).  The fact that who made the game and how they were inspired doesn't prove that the game is going back to the genre's roots.

DawgByte2
DawgByte2

@sensesfail99 @DawgByte2 Well, from the looks of it, Alien Rage seems like trash, as MetaCritic has only 1 positive review, the rest are average to suck. So there's not exactly that many out there, and IF there are... they probably fall way under the radar because they're piss-poor.

"Iron sights, makes it more realistic, better than everyone running around in circles trying to hip fire each other. Just as examples."

Videogames. So please don't bring up this Realism card. It's just dumb when every Shooter is essentially the same. There is plenty of room for few completely different Shooters from CoD style FPS. There is room for those Quake/Unreal Tournament style of Shooters.

@Dannystaples14@quakke@LiquidOcelot145

I never considered Counter-Strike an Unreal Tournament-like FPS. Counter-Strike was always more of a semi realistic (still fun) team game.

There simply seems to be no market for Arena Shooters because no one with true development skill has even tried to create anything astounding. Nexuiz and Shootmania. Kinda good but not really. Neither game had as great feeling as Quake3 foreaxmple which imo is a big problem if your game is not too interesting. Unreal Tournment 3 (2007) from Epic Games went through the usual streamlining of modern games which broke the whole purpose of the game. And they also made it look all brown/grey so very possibly someone who had never even heard of Unreal, was instantly turned off by the game because it looked like "just another grey colored FPS".

If someone had really tried to make a working Arena Shooter, then i would agree with you. Technically that is happening right now, but from the Indie side which always has the restrictions due to limited gamebudget.

I'm very much looking forward the these following titles because they seem like the best bet of getting one. Reflex (www.reflexfps.net), project Reborn and Cliff's new project.

Dannystaples14
Dannystaples14

@quakke @LiquidOcelot145 Very true but the people who still play those types of games regularly are a more niche group. Even Counter Strike and some of those games still popular on PC have stepped away from Unreal Tournament and Quake somewhat, because the market simply isn't there for them to be truly competitive with things like COD or whatever. Which after all when you spend a hell of a lot of money to make a game and then it only gets the attention of a small group that sucks and will most likely lead to the collapse of the company than anything.
