As BioShock studio winds down, outgoing designers discuss their proudest moments

Developers at Irrational Games talk about creating the BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea DLC.

As BioShock creator Irrational Games moves to effectively close down, some of the outgoing staffers have spoken out about their "proudest moments" at the studio. In a new video, outgoing Irrational Games designers explain what they are most proud of after spending the last eight months working on BioShock Infinite - Burial at Sea Episode 2. It is the last piece of content coming to the game.

To support their attempts to find new jobs, Irrational Games has posted contact information on the developer's website for every staffer featured in the video. The massive layoffs at Irrational Games affected the majority of the studio, as only Ken Levine and 15 colleagues will remain. They are launching a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" endeavor for publisher Take-Two Interactive, though this project remains a mystery.

Burial at Sea - Episode 2 launches March 25 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Bioshocks are simply not great games, not amazing. They're simply NOT BAD. No more, no less.

I absolutely loved all 3 Bioshock games and don't understand why such a great dev would close its doors, considering I thought all of the games sold quite well.  Either way, best of luck to all of them.  They were a talented group.

Yes I am immensely sad at their closing but for most of us Irrational fans, the studio was dead anyway. Bioshock 1 and Infinite are masterpieces for sure, but anything after System Shock 2 - especially Tribes 3 - does not count. Maybe SWAT. Maybe. It's all downhill after SHODAN.

I only wish things had gone differently and we ended up with Irrational making System Shock 3. Then again it would jump the shark if SHODAN survived a second time.

You either die a hero (Irrational), or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain (Infinity Ward).

I guess it is fitting they end it all in Rapture. I look forward to playing Burial at Sea Episode 2, and good luck to all the Irrational Games employees who are looking for new jobs.

You should all give yourselves a big pat on the back for the original Bioshock. That game was absolutely fantastic and easily one of the best of last gen

@Aphyosemion   Irrational Games was shutdown because it was owned by Kevin Levine.  If it was a publicly traded company or a subsidiary of 2K Games, it would not have been shutdown.  Regardless of the success of the Bioshock Games, it's owner wasn't interested in continuing with AAA FPS games.  You can see, based on Burial at Sea, that his video game mind-set is stuck in an underwater city.  I'd bet no grand ideas for the next game were flowing through his mind, so for Irrational Games to continue, Mr. Levine, needed to hire creative help.  However, I don't think Mr. Levine liked the idea of giving up control, especially when it's mostly his money at stake.  A smaller endeavor could be a failure and not make him destitute.  One mis-step in the AAA games business, could bankrupt him and his company.

@grenadehh I don't think a System Shock can be make in this generation. The mechanics are too complex and honestly a bit clunky for modern audiences.I think Irrational did the right decision in dumbing down the mechanics and create a new franchise in the mean time, so a new audience can be build and they don't piss old time fans at the same time.

Even though i played a lot of games and even old school games like Deus Ex,BioShock  and BioShock Infinite are my favorite games of all time and they actually got me really interested in Irrational earlier work, so i finally gave a chance to System Shock 2 and i'm having a ton of fun with it, its nice to see the roots of these games.
