Apple sells record 33.8 million iPhones in September quarter

Company sells record number of iPhones for September quarter; iPad sales reach 14.1 million.

Apple sold a record 33.8 million iPhones during the quarter ended September 30, the company announced today as part of its latest financial report.

33.8 million iPhones sold is a record for the September quarter and up from 26.9 million this time last year. In addition, Apple sold 14.1 million iPads during the quarter, up slightly from 14 million last year. Mac sales were 4.6 million for the period, down from 4.9 million this time last year.

Overall, Apple posted a net profit of $7.5 billion for the quarter, down from $8.2 billion last year. Total revenue for the period was $37.5 billion, up from $36 billion last year.

International sales made up 60 percent of Apple's quarterly revenue, the company said.

"We're pleased to report a strong finish to an amazing year with record fourth quarter revenue, including sales of almost 34 million iPhones," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Apple announced the iPad Air and a new Retina iPad mini. Both will go on sale beginning November 1.

That's cute, but Android has my heart.

33.8 million pissed off users because of iOS7.

I was on the fence about my next upgrade. It came down to a iPhone 5s, Galaxy 3, or Note 3. I had to go with the Note 3. Hella fast and more clicks and whistles than the iPhone5s.

Tell me again how Apple is doing terrible and the other manufacturers are eating their lunch?

For what it's worth, I use a Galaxy.

iphones are the best, unless you like themes and can't figure out how to jailbreak. Droids work well as a tablet and windows devices are garbage.

That is pretty damn impressive. They are obviously doing something right. I'm not an apple fan nor am I stupid enough to hate a company based on their popularity. Do they innovate? Well that's up to the individual consumer to decide.

Can't believe the amount of Lemmings that still follow the IPhone, simply unbelievable. The ignorance is overwhelming.

Can't wait for the fallout based on cheapness.

This is going to anger the Android Sheep. I still find it funny when sheep call other sheep, sheep. I'll stay with my $45.00 dumb phone, you just can't beat $25.00 a month.

Great! Wool prices should drop this winter with all these sheep.

1) why is there a picture of the 5C ? they cut production of the 5C because it wasn't selling

2) the sales figures are only up by 0.5 million on last year, which considering they launched the 5C and 5S in China this time where as last year the iPhone 5 wasn't released till December in China, basically means  if you remove China from this years figures sales have actually fallen.

@strothers101 That's no more commendable than saying "Cigarette companies have 1 billion active consumers so they must be doing something right". Don't underestimate the power of mass stupidity.

@strothers101 Apple is doing right  but learning how people think and what they feel. It is trend. Nothing but trend that made the sales.

Or perhaps some people tried both Android and iPhone and decided that iPhone is better for THEIR needs. Both Android and iOS have plenty of advantages that the other does not have.

Haters are probably just as ignorant as fanboys. :P

@lazerethjones Please, if they dropped the price even a little bit more you would have been part of this 33.8 million figure. The fact that people take these cell phone 'allegiances' so serious is completely mental.

@vox_populi The iPhone (or any cell phone) will never replace traditional handheld gaming devices. People simply don't buy cell phones for this reason. They buy them socialize for the most part. The most used piece of software on any cell phone out there is Facebook. GUARANTEED.

@vox_populi Yeah people are really going to want to play hardcore games with a battery sucking controller attached to a 5inch screen.

allever

@vox_populi Not gonna happen.  It's a pain in the arse to play games on the IOS.  IOS is for casual gaming.

CriticalCritic

@vox_populi Depending on your definition of "hardcore," there are plenty of games on iOS that may fit your needs. There's no dedicated controller, so until Apple makes one, the app store is just a mess.

Not just Vita and 3DS, also other gaming devices (consoles and pc). They are desperate because Apple innovate, and for sure will take them away from business.

@ahpuck To be fair, the Phone OS Wars are no different from the Console Wars...

Stick with Symbian or something; you'll be out of the firing line with it.

@RicanV No Apple are the ones doing the fleecing, they're going burn all the wool and sell people plastic jumpers at hugely inflated prices instead.

@vox_populi Apple cant make the same as before, remember jobs isn't there anymore unfortunately :(

toddx77

@vox_populi You do not want Apple to get into the video game industry.  Their first party games will all be like angry birds, the hardware will be inferior and have restrictions, and there will be new console generations every year to name a few.

@bj91x Fanboys Are people who purchase everything and anything like apple headnuts do. Apple the company that ripped off other Company's tech and then market it like it is their own. You should thank Motorola. Apple should be kissing Motorola's ass

banana23man
banana23man

@TacticaI  Well, no shit sherlock. A rational person takes into account price per unit performance, while a moron looks at a pretty phone and blindly buy it without even flinching at the ridiculous price tag. No one says that apple phones are objectively bad but what they do say is that those phones (and all of their other products) cost so much more than they're worth.

ahpuck
ahpuck

@DanielL5583 @ahpuck  True. These wars cause irrational behavior. People take it so personal, as if someone buying a different phone somehow affects their quality of life. Let it go people, let it go.

TacticaI
TacticaI

@SIDEFX1 The media runs these stories about a few idiots camping outside of an Apple store in X state or Y country, and you assume every Apple user is that excited to pay their phone bill? As far as your "why like what everyone likes" comment, come on, we're not in high school. God forbid you ALSO like the iPhone? If a consumer doesn't do their research and buy an iPhone based on a less than informed opinion, why do you give a shit?

TacticaI
TacticaI

@banana23man @TacticaI Smartphone prices are extremely competitive. Excluding pay as you go alternatives, you won't find a huge disparity in price, so I don't know who's fed you that bullshit about the cost of the iPhone, and these numbers prove not too many people are jumping to that conclusion anymore. Not every company places an emphasis on specs like screen size and processing power (Motorola, *and they never hold those advantages for the entire contract term anyway), others (Apple) are ''app-centric'' and more geared toward the social networking crowd, others are more business oriented, etc, so this ''rational person'' person is taking into account much more than price per unit performance, up to and including how pretty the phone is.
