Apple nearing 50 billion app downloads

Company closing in on new download milestone; top paid downloads include Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, and Minecraft.

Apple is closing in on 50 billion app downloads, the iPhone and iPad maker announced today. The company also launched a special countdown page with a live ticker constantly climbing toward the milestone.

The person who downloads the 50 billionth app will receive a $10,000 App Store gift card, while $500 gift cards will be given to the individuals who download the first 50 after that.

To mark the milestone, Apple also revealed (via VentureBeat) the top 25 most downloaded free and paid apps. Facebook has the top free app, followed by Pandora, and Instagram.

The first game to reach the free list was Words with Friends Free (6), followed by Temple Run (9), Angry Birds Free (13), Draw Something Free (14), Fruit Ninja Free (18), and Pac-Man Lite (23).

Games dominated the top 25 paid app list, with Angry Birds the number one overall app, followed by Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Cut the Rope, and Angry Birds Seasons. Also on the list is Minecraft: Pocket Edition (23), The Sims 3 (25), and Plants vs. Zombies (12).

The iOS app store launched in 2008. At press time, 49,255,738,404 total apps had been downloaded.

I'd love to know how many people deleted those apps after realizing how crappy they are.

Lots of apple hate here, but has anyone taken into consideration that Apple itself only makes about 5 apps. The app market is comprised of mainly independent developers. This 50 billion number goes far beyond Apple Corp and the products they sell. This 50 billion number is there to celebrate software developers.

It's easy to judge something when its standing on the opposite side of "your teams" goal.

I use Apple products for music production. I have supported many development teams over the years.

I was one of the people that used to say, "Apple is a greedy company" too. It wasn't until I got my head into the developer space and community that supports ios developers that it was the 3rd party that drives App not apple. Apple is just the host. 50 Billion opportunities to sell YOUR independently created software on a platform that is pretty damn stable and consistent is nothing short of a marvelous feat. Its something bigger then a simple "apple sucks" should warrant.

Thanks for this article. Developers are the reason we play.

games should follow the way apple is selling, before handhelds go out of business.

Seems like this Eddie bloke loves to talk about Apple.

Clearly no one on here gives a damn - find something more interesting and write about or don't write anything at all.

Well, they have the goty 2012 walking dead, baldurs gate, gta 3 and vice city, magic 2013, injustice.. Sure it's not as good as playing in a real console, but its still getting pretty decent for games. I bought the ios version of the walking dead, and i have to say i don't regret one bit. If u have a tablet you know how good those games are to play on a plane or on the road. Some games like magic i even preffer to play it on the ipad.

Not to mention the multiple final fantasies, emulators( if u jailbreak, but it's easy and legal). Ipad is a decent plataform for mobile gamimg, i still want a vita, but it doesnt have half the games the ios library has

10,000 in app store money seams like a joke, it's not like it cost them anything it's their store. would be good if you could use it to buy something real like a coffee. LOL

Lot of Apple hate here. Not surprised though, as this is a Gaming site (though judging by the crap articles I question that sometimes). News like this really wouldn't interest anyone regardless of what it was about, other than people holding stock in Apple. Do we care when we hear about Minecraft selling a million copies? No. These numbers mean nothing to anyone.

Though, I will say I find 50 billion impressive. 50 billion is A LOT. But I knew about this well before this article, as it's on Safari's start page. Hate on Apple all you want guys, it's not gonna change the fact that when you go out to the mall, or downtown in your city, you're gonna see tons of iPhones. Apple knows how to market, and everyone seems pretty happy with all their products. I've been Happy with every Mac I've used since my parents had a Mac II. Now I'm on MacBook, and I enjoy it very much so. All my personal stuff, and school and work is done on this thing. It's the center of my life.

I do own a few PC's. I've built a few, scavenged a few laptops for simple task, fixed computers for friends and family, and recently rescued one from being thrown into a fire (it's a Minecraft, TF2, DayZ server now :D) but PC's to me, are toys for games. Which is why after a horrible lightning strike fried a ton of tech in my house, getting my Mac's replaced were priority over my PC, as it's work first, toys second. Still having to save up to rebuild my PC :(

Anyways, I just see a ton of hate on Apple, and I gotta voice my opinion, even though I'll be scolded for loving Macs, I don't really care, because I'm an avid user of both PC's and Mac's, and I get the best of both worlds.

Because we totally care how many apps have been downloaded? How is this in any way relevant to gaming? Who thought this was important to announce?

Must say even if you won that gift card for 10,000 dollars what the heck would you spend it on how would somebody manage to spend that much money on app downloads? i mean i found it a struggle once with a iTunes gift card to spend £20 but nearly 10,000? wtf????

And this is not gaming news just because you mention Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and the rest does not mean its gaming news

The only games I play on my phone are emulated Gameboy/Sega/SNES/ N64/PSX games I used to play on consoles when I was a kid.  And sometimes maybe a quick game of Fruit Ninja or Tetris when Im on the road.  Mobile games will never beat consoles/PC.

What does this article have to do with gaming anyway... Is this IGN?

Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja were around ever since the iphone launched. And if they're still the top download now, it can only mean one thing. There isn't really a mobile gaming market. There's an Angry Birds market and Fruit Ninja market. Not a good thing at all. Once everyone either already has those games, or tired or it, the mobile gaming scene will plummet. This is what happened to Zynga. They thought social gaming was the future. Apparently, there wasn't a social gaming market. There was only a Farmville market. Once people got bored of it, the social gaming community dissapeared. Look at Zynga now.

The thing traditional gamers have to understand about mobile gaming is that it's a different animal. To the hardcore gamer it almost seems laughable that mobile could actually pose a threat to console gaming, but mobile thrives in one area that consoles and PC just can't compete with...Convenience. This is the reason Mobile so easily is dominating portable gaming. Everyone has a cell phone and soon everyone will have a tablet. I used toi think all mobile games were gimmicky sorta like Angry birds and thought it silly. But now they are making games on mobile that are even better than some of the console games for 1$.

@freesoulvw It is based on the user count.  I have seen people on face ask ' Should I get a iPhone or a Samsung'..Most comments replied with a Apple ' yet anybody that replied with Apple. Knows nothing about computers or video games let alone technology and iPhone themselves. Now this girl got herself a iPhone and to her this Iphone is the bomb, the ultimate nothing beats it especially when before that she was using a Blueberry. The touch screen and appearance of being in fashion and trend was Apple's marketing strategy as well as marketing towards people who know nothing about following with the latest trend and lastly they market everything as if they are the creators and that it is there own. What company has Apple not been sued by for Patent?  It was Samsung that designed the first iPhone.  Then when Samsung made the Galaxy Apple turned around and Stabbed them in the back. Samsung is still inside Apple phones. And if Apple is all about giving to the world. Why not have standard USB Flash. Standard connection etc.. Not being able to change the electricity plug must be disturbing for Apple. because all they really have done is form a cult and divide the world and Apple has been successful at that.

@ajay1708 You lost to the power of gimmick dude. your sole has been taken.. You fought it for long. but then you unfolded. It still is gimmicky. Mobile does not pose a threat to console but too handhelds. And so the tree branches out to ever lasting debate.

Thanks for posting reasonable thoughts instead of the anti-apple drivel that 99% of gamespot users seem to support.

I have played quite a few very enjoyable experiences on my Ipad. It's nowhere near my PC or PS3 in terms of gaming but mobile gaming is progressing very fast. Star Command just came out and that is anything but a "casual" game...

@SIDEFX1 I never said that mobile will take over traditional gaming. At it's best it's just something to past the time, but lacks the dept of a true video gaming experience. But every once in a while there is a gem even if it's in a sea of trash.

ajay1708
ajay1708

@Monopoman @ajay1708 Have you tried Real Racing 3, injustice, the Room, Bastion, Waking mars or Holy Archer? The App store has a lot of hidden gems in it, it's just a matter of digging through all the trash. I think Apple needs to make a better category section perhaps based off ratings so some of the best games are easier to find. i've even found that some games that have no reviews at all are actually pretty good as well.

@Soleride @drsw36 I find it kind of silly that you can't buy other apple products.  I could easily spend 10k on ipads, iphones, and macbooks.  Not that I'm a huge fan but those could easily be redeemed for cash.
