APB Reloaded apprehends 3 million players

Rebooted free-to-play online shooter touts milestone a week after leaving beta period.

APB flopped as a subscription-based large-scale online shooter, but the game has found a second life with a new business model. GamersFirst officially launched APB Reloaded out of beta last week and today announced that the free-to-play reboot has already far surpassed its predecessor with more than 3 million registered players.

By comparison, Realtime Worlds launched the subscription-based APB in June of 2010 and shut it down that September after attracting just 130,000 players.

APB Reloaded is currently available on Valve's Steam service for free, but GamersFirst is planning a retail launch of the game next week. While that version of the free-to-play game will sell for $30, it will contain $50 worth of virtual goods.

one does not simply resell a game on the internet...

@Reyveign you miss my point. they have to find a way to pay those who stock it on their shelves. you just do not go to a place and then just put it on their shelves. dungeon fighter was a retail release but also free to play. and again, i say world of warcraft is a staggered albeit GYPPED f2p model because after level 10 you MUST PAY TO PLAY.

the game is a mindless mess.

APB flopped because of its quality, not because of its business model. The missions were so repetitive that playing more than 2-3 hours was like getting a lobotomy and the shooting mechanics were bad. It's only fun for a short while, then its shortcomings make you not want to play it anymore.

Well good for them! I'd love to see more successes in the free-to-play realm, and further proof that people don't want WoW re-skinned, but new and better experiences than they've had in the past.

@mrzero1982pt2 APB is completely free to play...WoW is mandatory pay-to-play after a certain point. APB also has a large selection of cosmetics, guns and an optional "premium service" for sale for real $, which (if the forums are any indication) they're making money from. I like APB a plenty. I took part in the closed beta for the free to play re-release and still have the client installed & up-to-date today. I just find it odd that they're repackaging it to sell it like a normal retail product when it uses the free to play model. Additional content aside, it's a bit...misleading (?) to people that aren't aware that the game can be downloaded and played without spending a penny.

I loved this game. I was so disappointed when they cut it. I'll definitively get back to it

@reyveign wow is being sold for 1.07 in tennessee and after level 10 its 20 bucks a month... is activision strapped for cash? i think what they are doing is pretty cool, yeah, it is 30 bucks worth of stuff for 50 but they have to make money back somehow, right? i am not going to buy or play the game, but hey, i give em props for rereleasing something folks wanted to play. if you do not like it, do not play it. that is what i say.

I bet this is fake numbers... Given the retarded Gamersfirst company and the history of this game...I bet only the people who work in the company are playing the game.... So PHAIL!!! LOL... One of the worst game companies you will ever see in gaming company....

Free to play online games do seem to get a large initial surge of interest. But 6-months later, it could easily return to less than 100k.

Frosty192 ? is it atleast comparable GTA IV's openworld online freeroam multiplayer mode? In that I mean you have a living open world (you know with the NPCs walking and talking, with each other, some of them driving, some of them waiting for a train to arrive in the subway, NPC police perusing about on their preset beats, NPC driven buses and taxi's also being a part of traffic), all taking place in the same world on the same server as 16 player controlled characters?
