For a closer look at what the critics have to say, you can read several of the reviews below and take a look over at GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

Fans have been waiting a while for Alan Wake II, as the original game launched all the way back in 2010. Remedy had talked about its ideas for a sequel for some time, but some thought it would never materialize. Thanks in part to the huge success of Fortnite, Epic Games funded the development of Alan Wake II, which is why the game is exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC.

Another thing to know is that Alan Wake II is a digital-only game on PC and console, which Remedy said helped keep the price down to $50 on PC and $60 on console.

  • Game: Alan Wake II
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5
  • Developer: Remedy Entertainment
  • Release Date: October 27
  • Price: $60 on console, $50 on PC

GameSpot -- 10/10

"The mere existence of an Alan Wake 2 would have, at different points over the years, felt like a minor miracle, but for it to be this one, that feels singular in its achievements, and coming from a studio that refuses to shy away from the paths less traveled, makes Alan Wake 2 a miracle illuminated." -- Mark Delaney [Full review]

GameRant -- 2.5/5

"Even if the game's rather frustrating technical problems didn't exist, Alan Wake 2 would still be a disappointment because of its shortcomings in those departments." -- Dalton Cooper [Full review]

IGN -- 9/10

"Alan Wake II is a superb survival horror sequel that makes the cult-classic original seem like little more than a rough first draft by comparison." -- Tristan Ogilvie [Full review]

GamesHub -- 5/5

"Alan Wake 2 almost feels mad in its approach, with an overwhelming array of threads in the tale that threaten to collapse under pressure at any moment. Yet with clear and incisive logic, matched with a devotion to delightful absurdity, the team at Remedy has managed to craft a breathtaking story--one that plays out in clever, fascinating, and horrifying ways. This game is a monster. It will lodge itself inside your head, and threaten to stay there forever, if you'll only let it in." -- Leah J. Williams [Full review]

VGC -- 5/5

"Massively confident, often groundbreaking, and full of surprises, Alan Wake 2 is Remedy at its very best. The shooting isn't stellar, but Alan Wake 2 is otherwise a horror thriller that shouldn't be missed." -- Jordan Middler [Full review]

The Guardian -- 4/5

"With two protagonists exploring different worlds, this thriller is a thoroughly entertaining blend of detective procedural and narrative weirdness." -- Rick Lane [Full review]

GamesRadar -- 5/5

"The pacing won't be for everyone--with narration and exploration weighed equally against action and story--but if you are willing to embrace the weird rhythms and idiosyncratic tendencies that underpin the entire experience, what you'll find in Alan Wake 2 is an adventure quite unlike any other." -- Josh West [Full review]
