Gathering of Developers has announced Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne. The game, which is the second chapter in the turn-based Age of Wonders strategy game series, is in development at Netherlands-based Triumph Studios, and it is scheduled for release in early 2002. PopTop Software, the developer of Railroad Tycoon II, is providing development consultation on the project as well.

Like its predecessor, Age of Wonders II will integrate RPG-style character advancement, combat, magic, and empire building into a turn-based strategy game format. The game will feature a single-player mode as well as a simultaneous turn-based system in hot seat, LAN, Internet, and play by e-mail multiplayer modes. In addition, the game includes a scenario editor and a random map generator for increased replay value.

The game takes place in a fantasy world filled with several different races, monsters, and deities. In an effort to restore balance to an ancient empire, players must forge alliances with neighboring empires; research magical powers; command armies of soldiers, wizards, and creatures; and defend their cities against powerful enemies. If successful, players may earn a place in a group of immortal wizards known as The Circle of Evermore.
