Actors support Tiberium Wars

New C&C celeb factory includes <i>Lost</i>'s Sawyer, <i>The Empire Strikes Back</i>'s Lando, <i>Top Gun</i>'s Jester for live-action cutscenes.

Billy Dee Williams--works every time!

For the most part, live-action video in games is hard to find. Aside from a brief wave of games that included Night Trap, Wing Commander III, and Phantasmagoria, Hollywood actors haven't shown their faces too often in games, opting instead to do voice work for computer-modeled characters.

However, one series, Command & Conquer, did continue to incorporate live-action video. Actors such as Michael Biehn (Terminator, The Abyss), James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader, The Meteor Man), and Kari Wuhrer (Anaconda, MTV's Remote Control) have been featured in previous C&C games but departed from live-action video in its more recent installments.

That's not the case for the upcoming PC real-time strategy game Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars. In August, Electronic Arts announced that C&C3 would bring back actor Joe Kucan to reprise his role as Brotherhood of Nod leader Kane in high-def live-action scenes. Today, EA revealed that Kucan won't be alone in front of the camera and will be joined by a host of other well-known actors.

Fans of science-fiction properties will recognize most of the cast, which includes Josh Holloway (Lost's Sawyer), Billy Dee Williams (the Star Wars films' Lando Calrissian), Michael Ironside (the voice of Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher and Top Gun's Jester), and Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica's Number Six). The full lineup of actors featured in the game is listed below.

"This is the most fun I've had since Star Wars!" said Williams. "The game's story and universe are immersive and drew me right in. I was intrigued by my character, GDI director Redmond Boyle, because he has more depth than I expected from a video game personality."

The HD live-action scenes will be combined with computer graphics to help propel the game's plot forward. For added realism, EA has also employed the talents of real-world news casters to deliver TV-style reports of the Tiberium Wars.

Ivana Bozilovic.

For more information on how the cast was selected and the decision to include live-action sequences in the game, read GameSpot's Q&A with C&C3 executive producer Mike Verdu.

Command and Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars has not yet been rated and will be released in North America and Europe in 2007. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Dude, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park automatically make this game 20 times better. Hooray for sex appeal!

That's a superior list of B-stars. Even if I were not going to buy the game anyway, an appearance by Billy Dee Williams might sway my purchase. But I really wanted to respond to the EA haters: regardless of how you feel about the games that ship with the EA logo on them, it's a little misguided to make a blanket statement that says "EA does not make good games". Making a comment like that is more or less like saying "Warner Bros. doesn't make good movies" or "Virgin doesn't make good music". The corporate conglomeration nature of the business, while not quite as bad as film or music, means that 80% mainstream of games, and 99% of successful series like C&C will eventually wear the logo of EA or 2K or THQ or another such large "developer". But the fact remains, EA is made up of many different developers that have, fortunately or not, come under the EA umbrella. I don't know what the numbers are, but I would guess that the top 3 or 4 large game publishers and developers represent the overwhelming majority of the games that end up in the store. So whether or not you think this is a good thing, you can't take the credit away from the creative and development minds behind a game. In this case, there should be solid ex-westwood minds behind it, and hopefully the game will live up to its name.

Yeah but you guys are forgetting that there is alot of guys from the original Westwood studios that closed, that are working for EA on these games. So hopefully they will get it right The gameplay aspects should be #1 and the movie aspects should only be there to draw you in.

Grace Park + Tricia Helfer = Cylons as the third faction? Naah, way too cool to be true. But the two of them just as characters is way to appealing to pass the game up (of course, the gameplay ought to be good, too, I would think). BSG is cool. C & C 3 with actors from BSG is awesome.

In regards to: gozalo "Actors do not a good game make EA does not make good games" That's only partially true. In C&C's case, only the FMV and voice-overs will be done by actors and actresses. I just hope it's not a movie and game second. At the same time I hope EA doesn't license out C&C for a movie. Like Seoman_aridan said, a movie would screw the series. I'll go one step further and say it would kill it. As for EA not making good games...heh, well that's usually been the case lately, but they have the occasional game of brilliance and it keeps them going (e.g. Burnout 3: Takedown, Battlefield 2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, C&C: Generals, etc.) It's just that they have too much garbage and not enough brilliance. All in all, here's to hoping the FMV is just like C&C: Red Alert and C&C: Tiberium Dawn in how it was implemented and the gameplay isn't stale or garbage (To EA: C&C: Tiberium Dawn had potential and it failed to deliver, don't do that this time please).

A very good job of casting, indeed. I could definitely see Billy Dee Williams as his character of a civilian director. A C&C game without Joe Kucan is like the Bible without the book of Genesis. There would be no foundation. I think everyone is ecstatic to have Kucan back. For those of you who suggest making a movie, C&C already is a movie. An interactive movie woven together with a great stroyline told in cutscenes. A movie would screw C&C bad. Think of all the other games which have been made into movies. (Doom, Tomb Raider, etc.) One worry I do have, though, is that EA will inject Tiberium Wars with so much sillyness and humor that it will ruin the entire atmosphere and spirit of the game. (Yuri's Revenge. Absolutely horrible.) Watching the old cutscenes of TD and RA, they were dark and sometimes disturbing. It added an extra emotional punch that made all the work worthwhile. But while playing Yuri's Revenge, I felt that I wasn't getting any enjoyment out of it because of all the extra crap inserted into it. The cutscenes were all designed not with the goal of telling a story, but of a goal for "entertainment" in mind. To quote a previous C&C game, "Time will tell. Sooner or later, time will tell."

I hope this game marks the start of a very popular trend. I would pay a great deal to see even more integration between Hollywood and the gaming industry. Interactive cinema, but done in such a way as to deliver the most immersive experience possible. Mmm. Could it be? I am actually getting EXCITED about the release of this game! Yes! PC GAMING IS BACK, BABY!

>> James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader, The Meteor Man) Gamespot must have a grudge against Mr. Jones to mention the fact he was in The Meteor Man. Ugh! ;)

C&C is the best PC series in my mind and the live action segments helped push the game even farther. It's great to know that it will be back for C&C3. Kucan is KANE! Also probably the best character in the game.

I'd hit that! Forget the game, this franchise needs someone to bring it to the silver screen. If you think a few cutscenes with decent actors is good then a whole two hours of cinematic sweetness would be even better. Heck you could pretty much use the same cast and I'm sure Michael Biehn would hop on board for the kraft services alone. Room and board don't cost much. Add a cameo from Samuel L. Jackson and you have a blockbuster just waiting to happen.

WOW! Michael Ironside and Billy Dee Williams...... what does it take for us to get Michael Biehn back into the game series?? I'd chip in 20 bucks of my own money if everyon can pool in a paycheck to see him back into video game cinematics.

Ana-Lucia Cortez: How 'bout you gimme that gun? Sawyer: How 'bout I gimme you nothin'? Sawyer: You're in my light, sticks. Shannon: Light sticks, what the hell is that? Sawyer: Light, comma, sticks. As in those legs of yours. Josh Holloway better be supplying some of his Lost character's wit, that's some funny $%@#.
