Activision files to trademark 'Dance Hero'

Megapublisher registers title for possible Guitar Hero rhythm spin-off. Is a Dance Dance Revolution rival next?

by

It could be argued that Konami invented the instrument-based rhythm game genre when it created Guitar Freaks and Drummania around the turn of the century. However, it wasn't until earlier this year that the Japanese publisher announced its first multi-instrument rhythm game, Rock Revolution. Set for release October 14, the title will attempt to take a slice of the faux-rocker revenue pie cooked up by MTV/Harmonix's Rock Band and Activision's Guitar Hero series.

Now, it appears Activision may be readying its own rival to one of Konami's bread-and-butter rhythm franchises, Dance Dance Revolution. This week, the Activision Blizzard subsidiary filed an application to trademark the name "Dance Hero" with the US Patent and Trademark Office. If granted, the trademark would give Activision rights to the name for "computer game software," "interactive video game programs," "computer game discs," "downloadable computer game software," and other related categories.

Though Activision reps had not responded to requests for clarification as of press time, the very name Dance Hero evokes images of a title along the lines of DDR or EA's more recent Boogie. However, just because Activision has registered the name, doesn't mean a game is definitely in the offing. In January 2007, Activision trademarked "Guitar Villain" and "Drum Villain", with no sign of a game bearing either handle having yet surfaced. This past February, it locked down rights to the title "DJ Hero" without announcing a new product, although rumors of a turntable-based mash-up game bearing the name are beginning to bubble up.

"DJ Hero" sounds like it might be as fun as "Get hit by a bus Hero".

what Konami needs to do it make a better Beatmania game for the states. the first one sucks in terms of songs cause they didnt know what music the US audience preferred. even though rock band and guitar hero will always be fun..i think its time to get back into some really good trance, drum n bass, break beats and techno when it comes to music games. the last few DDR games just ruined it for me with the club/dance music that sounded pretty much like any other pop song.

@ zookguy, guitar hero simply caught up with the multiple instruments that rock band has, so it has only made jumps in terms of that specific title, guitar hero has a few new features like uploading music, which will probably ruin genuine music for good and just replace actually musical talent with GH skills lol

I highly doubt they will come up with this. However, doing a little research...I noticed something. So far every "TM" that Activision has placed, there was already a game based on the same premise. "Guitar" Hero, "Drum" Villain, "DJ" Hero, and now "Dance" Hero? Anyone hear of the BeMani series? Games like Beat Mania (DJ), DDR (dance), Guitar Freaks (guitar), and Drum Mania (drums). It seems activision is trying to claim its rights in case Konami decides to bring the whole gang (and not just a few members like it is now) over for a party.

ddr is fun...and has good songs. judging from guitar hero's abysmal choice of tracks...im assuming 'dance hero' will have us dancing to stupid remixes of clay aiken rather than true house/dance/electronic music. great. i like acti-blizz..maybe they can pull it off we'll see

Are you F&^$#*& playing around Activision, why making something gay like dance hero. Try thinking of what the audience wants, not what gay people want. I think that if activision needs an idea for a game, they better do a game were there is a lot of zombie killing, and they may call it Zombie Hero (lol)

Come on, why not slap Konami in the face even more and just call it DDR Hero.

provided they make the dance games with the care and attention spent on the GH series, I see no reason why these games won't kick ass.... The "Villain" name sounds interesting too....

why do they keep using the "Hero" trademark??? they've trademarked Drum Hero Singing Hero and other stuff. HERO only works with GUITAR HERO!

Trademarking a bunch of titles just so no one else can use them? That should be illegal. I don't understand how they could apply to TM a title that doesn't correlate to an existing project. That's just stupid, lazy and greedy. As for all these rythm games, they're starting to be just like the EA sports games. New stuff comes out all the time, but rarely do we see anything really revolutionary.

I highly doubt there's a Dance Hero coming. They're most likely just registering the name so nobody else can come along and use the "Hero" trademark.

its official we have gone to far with the "Hero" games im cool with guitar and world tour and when i heard about the DJ Hero coming im pumped because hip hop is my first musical love bear in mind its not this soulja boy and new ring tone rap crap there putting in the game better be classics like The Notorious B.I.G. , 2pac, Nas, Jay-z, Run DMC , LL Cool J, etc you catch my drift anyways the point is now the have gone tooo far dance hero? dude if i wanted a dance game im gonna get the champ DDR its proven and its a great game unless they revolutionize the genre and now stupid add ons i might be tempted but if not but really leave the dance games to japan we westerners know nothing about it unless you get some great dancers input like say AC/DC crew, Jabbawockeez, Chris Brown, Usher , Michael and Janet Jackson etc for input and maybe have a break dance mode or freestyle mode would be sick

Lol okay, for anyone who says it's all the same thing just with a new face. That's like saying every shooter, fighting game, rpg, sports game, racing game, or action/adventure game are all the same. Yeah, they ALL follow by the same concepts (you hit a button, wave a controller, step on an arrow, turn a turntable, drum; throw/hit/kick a ball, hit someone/something, shoot, take off hit points/energy, drive; lose, continue, win) but are still in their own way different (even if they still end up sticking to what their genre is, but, isn't that the point of having them there)? Hating on games on a site dedicated to videogames,...point for coming here is...? It's not hard to have a healthy social life and play games. Oh yes, how about we have some crappy special about how DDR has taken over one man's life. Or wait, just because it doesn't involve guns, cars, or sports automatically means it's not fun correct? My bad =P.

Forget it,DDR is official...I would never buy a Dance Hero unless it extremely owns, which I extremely doubt.DJ Hero, however,is extremely tempting, that sounds fun:)

Thats dumb. These games in general are dumb. its the same repackaged crap everyyear, but with new songs. Nothing new or nothing. That whole studio crap thats gonna be in the new Guitar Hero game is gonna be even more retarded. Instead of making real songs or dancing too songs in you're house, why not go out to a club and dance...with girls even! Or pick up a real guitar or drum set and create you're own music or learn other music. I don't wan't to hear any of that "Well, SOME PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR THAT!" Well, if you have the money to keep buying these dumbass games every year, im pretty sure you can buy real instruments and go out clubbing. Thats just my view though. I just really...really...REALLY hate these games.

Just like Activision to start making quick cash-ins (Aerosmith, Metallica, Guitar Hero in general since the 3rd game). Oh well, that's business for you.

I think they're just trademarking all these names so other companies don't take them and make games that people may confuse with their own (for the purpose of getting more sales).

I hate people who say why play guitar hero when you can play real guitar instead. Well i play electric & Bass guitar and i still find guitar hero fun as well as a challenge
