Acclaim Shows Off Sports Games

Three new N64 titles were shown to EGM editors today. Here's how they played and what they looked like.

NBA Jam 99 is a full-on five-on-five simulation game featuring all the NBA teams and players. There is still a Jam mode that enables monster dunks and players catching on fire. The highlight is easily the Bill Walton (one of two announcers) commentary. He utters some of the most inane remarks ever heard in basketball telecasts, but they're irresistibly endearing. This one may have some legs.

NHL Breakaway 99 is the follow-up to last year's surprise hit. It looks pretty good and promises a lot more features.

Quarter Back Club 99 is simply awesome. The graphics are better than last year's with supersmooth animation. QBC 99 uses the Ram pack, but all it does is speed up the menu selection and storage capacity of instant replays. That means even without the pack, you'll get eye-popping visuals and animation. Truly impressive. The AI still needs work, but it is, after all, a sneak peak and not a review. Be sure to check out the pics.
