3DS Amazon UK's most preordered system ever

Nintendo handheld tops PlayStation 3 as online retailer's best prerelease performer with 20 percent more reservations and a week left before launch.

by

While the March 25 launch of the 3DS in the UK is likely to draw a significant number of eager gamers camping out overnight to get their hands on the new handheld, one retailer has found that more customers than ever before are willing to order online and wait for the mail carrier to make the rounds.

The revolutionary new secret that has Brits shedding hundreds of pounds like never before.

Amazon.co.uk today announced that the 3DS has become its most preordered gaming system of all time. With a week remaining before the system's launch, the 3DS already has 20 percent more preorders than the PlayStation 3 had at its launch date. The 3DS has also topped the best performances of its fellow Nintendo systems, beating (supply constrained) Wii preorders by 56 percent and DSi preorders by 255 percent.

"It's unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch; such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year's Microsoft Kinect," said the retailer's director of video games, Chris Poad.

The Wii was Amazon.co.uk's third most preordered piece of gaming hardware, with last year's Kinect and PlayStation Move launches coming in at fourth and fifth on the list, respectively.

@ Hardstyler2012 Firstly, why on earth do people feel the need to swear about everything?I've had them swear when giving me compliments.Sheesh. Anywho.....it's called a paralax barrier. It splits the image into 2 images and presents a slightly different one to each eye, just like how our eyes being in two spots on our heads give each a slightly different angle on what we're looking at. Just google it,or look it up on wikipedia.

Be well aware of possible shortages, just like the Wii and DS.

@mooooo99 anyone in the know about the 3DS happens to know new iterations are unlikely. Miyamoto himself stated the DS iterations were based on modernising the old DS, looks wise it was pretty retro so that is why the DS lite came out and it had little Internet features so that's why DSI came out but the 3DS is stated to have already incorporated everything they learned from all the DS models. It's measurements are the same (give or take a mm) as the DS lite, it has the good back lighting, it has more modern looks along with DSI features and camera's so there's little room for improvement since no thinner model will come out. Quite frankly all you can hope for is a 3DS XL and I'd rather not wait that long for a .5 inch bigger screen that they will charge more money for so I wouldn't even save any money. If people want a 3DS there is little reason to hold back as improvements are unlikely, waiting for games you want is the best excuse but the titles announced so far are not too shabby. Metal Gear and Resident evil? Yes please, Zelda and Mario? Why not? Then I like fighting games so Street fighter, Blaz Blue and Dead or Alive coming out so soon is pretty cool. Then when Metroid, Pokemon, Fire emblem and others come I'll be happy as pie.

Man all these people talking about how they tried the 3DS at Best Buy or Gamestop make me feel SO sad. Why did I move from Boston!??!Nothing cool EVER happens in central Illinois!

From what I played, I got a terrible headache (I can barely watch any 3D movie all the way through due to this though, so I guess my opinion is moot) yet everything else was the same as the DS.... but better. Definitely buying one once I find some money

Just played the 3DS at Best Buy! :D It was awesome! The 3D took a while to get used to, but once I did, it was beautiful. :D

While I'm not really a fan of the DS (I have one... For Pokemon and Scribblenauts), this shows what people really want. Everyone wanted a DS for its simple games and unique control scheme, add 3D to the equation and we have a winner.

Do I have to explain this to everyone who doesn't understand what the 3DS IS!? It's not just another DS with 3D attached to it: it is a new system - a successor. Compare any of the four DS models with the 3DS and you should find significant differences between them. And I don't wanna hear about how the 3D effect will hurt your poor wittle eyes either. That whiny complaint is getting old.

@BILLNYE6983 The NGP and 3DS will both never be able to compete with the Apple market. Even if the NGP or 3DS could do all the iPhone/iPad could do(which they can't thanks to the app store), they could still never compete in that market. People will buy the NGP and 3DS as portable consoles. People buy iPhone/iPads as general media devices. The Zune is better than the iPod but the iPod won out. Almost every Android phone is better than the iPhone 4 but the iPhone 4 won out. And almost every Tablet PC is better than the iPad but again the iPad won out. Its a mindset the public have that Apple products are easy to use and better than all other media products. In the end the NGP and 3DS are a lot better than the iPod Touch/iPhone but the masses see them as different products which is why I own an iPod, gaming consoles and a camera even though I can do it all on my smartphone.

@BILLNYE6983 The 3DS doesn't just show pop out 3D, it shows depth. Try shooting a basketball with an eye closed. Theres a really good chance that you'll miss and thats because with only one eye opened you only see a flat image and no longer see in 3D. Thats what the 3DS does. It gives depth to images by showing each eye a separate image. So no its not just some trivial feature. 3D is the next step in movies and gaming. And the reason 3D gives people headaches is because it makes your eyes use muscles that haven't been developed on a daily basis. They just have to work out those muscles a bit more and then the eye strain will be gone. Nintendo is precautious and says children 6 and under shouldn't use the 3D(to avoid stupid lawsuits) but the actual professionals, being optometrists, say that 3D is good for eye training and has no negative effects, only positive effects. http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5iCJ0KB_I8SID89TOFgZ_hJdehaXg?docId=6289421 So in the end it is an advancement and it isn't misguided. Movie theaters went from Standard to HD/Imax to 3D and games are gonna do the same.

BILLNYE6983

@penpusher I honestly think it will be close enough to 50-50. Nintendo will probably lead for awhile cause of the headstart. Considering that the Ipod/Ipad cost much more with less ability for gaming I honestly think the NGP could cut into the Ipod market. The original PSP was the only does everything portable device before Iphone and the smartphone craze. A lot of people don't realize this. If NGP has a good browser, video, and music player though it could honestly be a better option than an ipod for a lot of people. Size being the only negative. I would say battery but honestly I bet just listening to music with the screen off will grant pretty good battery life. It did for PSP.

penpusher
penpusher

@BILLNYE6983 true it should easily get a larger percent of the market share but 50-50 isnt going to happen. For one thing nintendo will defend their position far to hard to allow that and you have to keep in mind that the ipad/iphone are also out for a peice of the market (since they are gaming devices they are part of the competition. Mind you I do hope it does well. Psp was by no means a bad console and I for one am considering the psp2 as well

Woulder if anyone told them Amazon always screws over people who preorder, and they get it late. serves them right aswell for trying to be smart. Just look at the WoW expansion release reviews on Amazon it shows on there how badly they were screwed over.

I know the 3DS will be a great success and I hope the NGP is successful too. There are many games of the original DS that I like more than most ps3, wii or 360 games. Creativity can come from any console and I know developers will be able to take advantage of both 3DS and NGP's capabilities.

BILLNYE6983
BILLNYE6983

@penpusher Well I was never saying that. NGP is likely going to gain more of the market than PSP did though. I probably somewhere between 40-50% this time. If NGP launches at 250 with solid games and continues to bring out good games regularly I bet it will end up around 50-50 for 3DS and NGP. To be honest there is plenty good about all the nintendo handhelds. But Nintendo is mainly the top dog right now because Nintendo is the top dog. Look at Apple with Ipods/Ipads. Competitors offer products that are good but the conception is that they (Apple) are the best. Same goes with Nintendo. PSP would have been a lot more sucessful if more people had given it a chance. Everyone wrote it off cause it had a poor launch and it wasn't a Nintendo handheld. I think both systems offer something different. Which is good. NGP helped bring a different crowd to portable gaming. DS targets a different crowd also.

Flint247

We ultimately cannot say if the "3D" effects are good or bad, because it depends on a person's eyes. Some may enjoy it, some may not. So I believe we can't make the 3D part a con or a pro. Fortunately, I am not buying the 3DS just for the 3D effects, I am getting it for the games and other features as well. Even without 3D, this system is still epic, in my opinion.

I'm excited about this had the chance to try it out last month, but myself and few other people said the their eyes hurt after playing for over 10 mintues. I'm worried about what effect it might have on the eyes or head aches and stuff like that. But saying that it did look brilliant

@Icehearted I see what youre getting at but people have played it. Gamespot for example have given massive amounts of coverage and opinion on it as have the likes of IGN and gamespy and who knows how many magazines. But I do understand now you put it that way. For me Ive always been a big nintendo guy and they've yet to let me down so I shall be going for it when I can regardless :)

penpusher

@BILLNYE6983 yes only, in relative terms, I'm not denying its a success but based on that I still really doubt that the new psp will dwarf the 3DS. Nintendo are kings of handhelds for a reason.

BILLNYE6983

@riariases Those other examples don't compare at all. 3D has inherent issues and is not at all a direct advancement of display technology. Many people can't watch 3D. Period. Many people get headaches from it. 3D is pretty cool in an action based movie or game. But as it has niche appeal. Comparing it to legit across the board advancements is misguided. There is not advantage to 3D. It makes it sort of look like stuff is coming at you. That is it...

@penpusher A brand name usually doesn't evoke positive or negative feelings from me, I see a product for what it has to offer. If something has never been released fore consumption, why assume it's worth spending money on when nobody knows for certain (or even a vague idea for that matter)? Preorders are silly because it's people spending money on something that nobody has played yet. No reviews, no actual user input, just a lot of assuming that because it has Nintendo or Sony stamped on it that it will be worth a premium. My money is better spent on something after a general idea on it's merits are formed rather than before a product is even out yet.

People who are complaining about 3D and new technology need to come to terms. Its happening, get used to it. The same thing happened with Blu-Ray, LCD/LED flatscreen TVs, Digital Cameras, new cell phone OS(Windows Phone 7, Android, etc), SD cards, and so on. Its because people see it as a threat to their old technology. They don't want their current things to become past technology so they think that hating on the new technology is gonna somehow make it unsuccessful meaning they can keep their old stuff. Just shut up and deal with it. No matter what you do, old technology will always be flushed out by new.

@ blackace O yes,I already have mine preordered. I'd hate to go through what my friend went though with the Wii. Once,he stood in line and the last one sold went to the guy JUST before him. This is the first system from any company I am buying right out of the gate, and I want the experience to go smoothly. @ nobody in particular I must've made some people mad. :) Apparently not everyone thought that caption was funny,or understood my meaning about Buicks and Audis. Fun stuff.

BILLNYE6983

@penpusher ONLY? Sony on their first attempt in a new market that had no competition for years came in and took a third of the market. The Xbox was only able to get 1/8 of the market when it made its first console. People don't realize how big of a sucess the PSP was considering the circumstances. @packtop I understand price arguments. But people literally said 3D gaming was not good period. Not that 3D gaming is too expensive. People just changed tune.

Wormkid_64
Wormkid_64

@ BILLNYE6983 Actually, the device wasn't built around #D. One of their recent articles shows they were just planning to make a more powerful system, but then,as they has with nearly every system they've made, they asked,"Can we make this 3D?" The answer has been yes many times, but only in today's era is the tech cheap enough and of a high enough quality and in enough demand to actually implement it. You're right,it isn't beastly powerful, but until the NGP comes out,it will be the most powerful handheld yet,and that's something. 3 to 5 hours is enough for me,maybe not for some, but it is what it is.There is an aftermarket device that doubles the life by Nyko or whatever they're called.

bsnimunf

love the fact they didnt bother giving a number. It could have been preordered ten times for all we know.

@BILLNYE6983 The big difference between the 3DS and PS3 is that on the 3DS you don't need anything else then the 3DS to play 3D. But on the PS3 you need a 3DTV that cost like 3000$ and need to wear glasses. The reason peoples complained a lot about the 3D on the PS3 is because not everyone have 3000$ to waste on a 3DTV just to be able to play 3D games with the PS3.
