38 Studios founder Curt Schilling has cancer

Former Major League Baseball pitcher and founder of now-bankrupt video game studio reveals today he has cancer.

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, who founded the now-defunct Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning video game company 38 Studios, told ESPN today that he has cancer. Schilling works at ESPN as a Major League Baseball analyst.

Schilling with comedian Jimmy Fallon in 2012

"I've always believed life is about embracing the gifts and rising up to meet the challenges," Schilling said in a statement. "We've been presented with another challenge, as I've recently been diagnosed with cancer."

This isn't the first health issue for Schilling, as he revealed last year that he had a heart attack in 2011 and needed surgery. His wife, Shonda, is a cancer survivor.

"Shonda and I want to send a sincere thank you and our appreciation to those who have called and sent prayers, and we ask that if you are so inclined, to keep the Schilling family in your prayers," he said.

38 Studios went bankrupt in May 2012. Since then, Schilling has been involved in the very public battle surrounding the controversial $75 million loan that brought the company to Rhode Island in 2010. The Rhode Island legislature is now considering a settlement to end the matter.

Gotta wonder how much the whole Studio 38 fiasco contributed to this. Either way, I really hope he recovers fully and comes back better than ever.

Hope his family are okay. When my dad (Who's mid 40's) was diagnosed with Leukemia the amount of dread and negative thoughts were horrible. Only a few months later my Nan passed away from brain cancer and just after Christmas my dog had developed cancerous tumors across her stomach. Cancer doesn't like me, I guess.

Oh a settlement, eh? Oh AWESOME! Man, why can't this guy just have a smooth year?! Let this man have some peace, & the medical help he needs. You and your family are definitely in my prayers, Mr. Shilling! Naysayers be damned!

All those lawsuits, all that stress and negativity will wear anyone off. Hope he recovers and soon, he doesn't deserve any of the shit he's been dealing with lately.

This is just terrible news. Wish the best for him and his family and hope it's caught early. In the last 3 years I've battled it and had 3 major surgeries, all while seeing my father pass away from it. It truely is becoming a world problem.

I'm going to go crass on this, the man had a solid run.

I enjoyed Reckoning:KoA way more than Skyrim; and his Red Sox career comes off legendary.

That's more than most can even dare in today's market.

No one deserves the horror that is cancer.

Its the emperor of all maladies

I wish him the best of luck and shall leave it at that,

at this time opinions about his decisions seems rather trivial no?

@iamllamapie Yeah, two of my neighbors(husband and wife) both died from cancer within a couple months of eachother. The wife had if before and then she was in remission and the husband died within a couple of weeks of being diagnosed. I think part of the reason the wife got it again and died so quickly was because of the overwhelming stress and everything else that goes along with losing your husband that quick. And that's one reason I think Curt developed it. He certainly had a LOT to deal with the last couple of years or so. Sometimes life shits on you hard. I think we have all had periods like that in our lifetimes if you have lived long enough to see it. With the ups come the downs, but I wish the downs weren't so bad sometimes.

@LJNkickstarter No, not xbox or pc only. I have it for the PS3 but haven't beat it yet due to way too many other games out there. But I will get to it before I get my PS4. Anyway, I really hope he beats it as well(the cancer that is).

@gargungulunk I enjoyed KoA more then Skyrim as well.

The combat system in KoA was so much more fun then Skyrims and had so many more options/depth.

The only draw back to the games was the lack of difficulty.

The game itself sold EXTREMELY well for a new IP and I just wish they had a chanc eto keep building off it.

/Regardless, the man had a great baseball career on top of trying ot at least do something he loved doing, which is more then most people do with their lives.

I hope he pulls through this.

@DAOWAce As soon as i saw the article come up, I knew some miserable piece of trash like you would be here.

Xirtahm

@DAOWAce Wow.  You have absolutely no medical knowledge whatsoever.  There is no way to 100% prevent cancer from forming in your body.  There are ways to reduce risks yes, but you can be the healthiest person on the planet and still get lethal killers like breast, prostate, brain or even pancreatic cancer.

If there were such a 100% preventable method, it would have been revealed long ago.  That's why they urge early screening, so they can detect the cancer early, and deal with it before it becomes a serious problem.  What they eat often has NOTHING to do with it.  Did you know something as simple as radon exposure can cause lung cancer?  And THAT'S an odorless, colorless gas that is emitted from the earth itself, naturally.  Kinda debunks your whole "you need to eat well" claim.

You're a fucking idiot, and people like you need to stop trying to educate strangers in a forum on a subject you only THINK you know about.  "Nutrition problem" my ass...  You have no idea what you're even fucking talking about.

@DAOWAce  I doubt you will be saying the same thing when you finally get a cancer

Sohereiam

@DAOWAce Do you know how cancer is formed... hell, do you even know what is cancer?

I'm pretty sure you don't, in the body there's a system that removes cell's after reaching their lifespan limit, if this system fails a mass of useless cells is formed is your body, this mass can contaminate others cells and enlarger it also consumes all of your body nutrients and damages your immunological system, the mass even releases hormones that thick's the blood and hormones that affects one thinking capability and emotions.

@DAOWAce Well good for you for discovering the cure for Cancer, well done!

Unholy123
Unholy123

@DAOWAce... well lucky you, Must be nice to sit pretty with the knowledge of how cancer is formed in your body and how to prevent it...

Say why don't you take your genius to the many oncologists out there working day and night to treat and prevent it... why horde your knowledge to yourself to use to be smug about anothers suffering?

While being healthy and eating well improves your odds it in no way is some sort of %100 gaurentee to preventing it.

The modern age is filled with cancers forming in people who live perfectly healthy lives while those who drink and smoke end up living till their 90 dying of banal infections...

But please don't let me stop you from acting superior to a sick man.

gargungulunk
gargungulunk

@aeterna789 @gargungulunk

Not to mention interface-structure, I've put over 100 hours into Reckoning.  Skyrim: I don't care...it's like 30 or forty hours.  I could hype the KoA more, but that wouldn't change anything...it simply was more enjoyable.

CallMeDuraSouka

DaoWace is no doubt a true hardcore vegan, and therefore, despite the fact humans are omnivores, is all knowing and holier than thou. I've been around cancer and medicine in general a long time, and there are several diet books that cure cancer, prevent it and so on. The claim based on certain combination of fruit/ vegs may improve basic health and the ability to help fight disease, but as far as preventing the mutation of cells due to genetics, or severe outside influences.....no, just no.

Faye_Tallity

@DAOWAce @snakebite6x6x6 Do you study cancer cells, under a microscope? Do medical doctors, & universities the world over call to you, to give us speeches on your latest cancer developments? Are you the exalted one when it comes to cancer knowledge? Maybe YOU can cure CURT SHILLING! If not, then it will be YOUR fault if he passes! UGH

I'm sure you'll also "blame him" for his not listening to your "cancer prevention" speech.

Nevermind. I will never understand some people...

ducusss
ducusss

@DAOWAce @snakebite6x6x6  You define pseudo-intellectual. You really should be ashamed of your idiotic comments, there is no magic behind those words as you so love to believe. Let's ignore the fact that you obviously don't understand cancer, seeing as how living a healthy life only decreases your chances of developing it, and doesn't eliminate the chances. Let's just focus on how you're a smug wad that approves of the pain and suffering of unworthy fools who just wouldn't listen to your prophetic words of wisdom. Why do you think you can take this stance and receive respect? Nobody likes people like you, and for good reason; your arrogance isn't only annoying, it's unjustified.

DAOWAce
DAOWAce

@snakebite6x6x6 And contributions are not causes.  However, when something is universally bad for you, obviously you don't want to do it (ie; smoking, drugs, being exposed to toxic chemicals, etc.).

As for the sun, well, it's a double edged sword.  We need it to be in proper health, but at the same time too much can cause issues. However, the sun does not CAUSE skin cancer, it triggers it in those in poor health. It's this triggering that seems to be routinely ignored when people think about diseases, like colds or cancer.  We have harmful bacteria in our bodies.. we have cancer cells in our bodies.  It's only when one's health becomes poor enough that the trigger goes off for it to affect us.. and then we get sick, or in this case, suffer from cancer.

Just exercising and being physically active isn't enough; it needs to be backed with real, healthy, uncontaminated and unbastardized food (ie; nothing artificial, genetically modified or loaded with pesticides or other harmful chemicals), and the right food at that; to stay alkaline while fully supporting our vitamin and mineral needs (which in most cases normal people can't do, including myself, hence why multivitamins and other supplements exist, which should be taken if that's the case).

I won't go into anymore detail here. There's a wealth of information available online and in books people can research for themselves.  And honestly, considering the usual mass insults and other degrading, vile filth spewed by some people when I talk about things like this, I really shouldn't even be saying anything in the first place. It's heart wrenching when you really care to help people improve themselves and live amazing lives, yet they don't want to listen to a damn word you have to say, or just don't care to begin with.  ('Course, I suppose me saying I have no sympathy for the ignorant didn't help..)

snakebite6x6x6
snakebite6x6x6

@DAOWAce  There are many things beyond nutrition that contribute to cancer. Cigarettes, radon gas, too much sun...etc....
