Geena Davis Isn't In Beetlejuice 2 For A Pretty Good Reason

Although Geena Davis starred in the original Beetlejuice, there's a good reason why she's not in the sequel.

Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara are all reprising their roles from Beetlejuice in director Tim Burton's upcoming sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. However, two of the original film's primary stars, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin, will not be reprising their roles as the ghost couple Barbara and Adam Maitland. Davis recently confirmed that she won't be in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and she also explained why.

"No, I'm not. I'm not in the remake," Davis told Entertainment Tonight. "Oh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don't age... Not that I have... Our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever, so it's been a while, it's been a minute."

In the first film, the Maitland's tragically died in a car accident near their home, which they haunted before and after the Deetz family moved in. Keaton's title character also tried to trick the Maitlands into unleashing him on the Deetz family, especially once he fixated on Lydia Deetz (Ryder). But by the end of the film, the Maitland and the Deetz families peacefully co-existed in the house.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice introduces Wednesday star Jenna Ortega as Lydia's daughter, Astrid Deetz. The first trailer for the film revealed that the Maitland's model of Winter River, Connecticut is still in their old house, which factors into Beetlejuice's return.

Davis also told ET that she hasn't seen the trailer yet, but she wants to.

"I heard the trailer came out and somebody said they were crying, so I have to see the trailer," said Davis.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hit theaters on September 6.
