Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare is Exactly That.

Many times in gaming we as gamers have many different gerenes of games to pick from. As of late many gamers are going absolutely insane for the Survivor Horror games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Left 4 Dead and Onimusha. Then there are games like Alone in the Dark. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare for the GameBoy Color is a port of multiple systems for the game of the same name. With a look that reminds me more of King's Quest on the PC with pre rendered backgrounds and an actual half way decent 3D sprite that represents your playable character, Edward Carnby. The storyline behind this game is you discover that your friend Charles Fiske has been found dead on the coast of the mysterious Shadow Island, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. In playing this game I have found it rather frustrating with the controls The D pad moves you, fluidly I might add, which is a plus because they attempt to give some obsticals for the very boring and plain 2D background with your 3D sprite. B is your action button and A is for your item and select takes you to your inventory while you are in the non battle segments of the game. When you enter the dreadful fighting segments you go to a top view where again A is your trigger and B has no function. For me at least it was rather difficult play, I got bored easy and frustrated with the game because i kept getting lost. As for how it looks. It's what you expect for a handheld game, there is no face on Edward while in game, but the cut scenes, and there will be many, he has a decently done face. Sound, there isn't much sound to speak of unless you are in a cut scene or in one of the fights. If you are a fan of the Survial Horror games, this game will disappoint, but is a fairly decent way to kill a couple hours. 4 out of 10
