User Rating: 6.5 | Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction PS2
I'm not an FPS fan, so this game was nice: it lets me get into the Predator vs. Aliens world while playing in my favorite genre. My biggest complaint is that it's difficult to control everything with a regular PS2 controller, but I agree with the GameSpot review: they did a good job with what they had to work with. So far, I've found the Aliens to be very difficult to play because of the way they get new units. I've finished the Predator campaign on Easy difficulty, and was dissapointed that the game ended when I completed the last level ... no fanfare, no "good job", no "Hey, there's a cool movie, but we're not going to show it to you unless you pass the game on a harder level," it just ended like any other level and popped me back to the level selection menu. That doesn't affect the way the game plays, but modern games let you sit back and revel in your accomplishment when you complete them. I only gave sound a 5 because, while the sound effects are pretty good, there doesn't seem to be a lot of depth to them. PC RTS games have a lot of voice acting in them, and AVP doesn't. Sound isn't really used to convey anything other than "You're in a firefight: things are blowing up," when positional sound could've been used better to help the player keep track of what's going on (nearby) off-screen. Overall, I'm glad I have this game because I'm a fan of Aliens vs Predator and the RTS genre. If you're not a fan of both, though, you'll probably want to skip this one.
