A good title to pick up for XBLA

Behemoth is an interesting studio, and like to have their own artistic and comedic flare prevalent in their games. Alien Hominid is the game which put this new studio into the spotlight, at least in my eyes, and are a group which should not be overlooked. Based on a flash game that the group created for Newgrounds, Tom Fulp and crew highly revamped the visuals, play, and length into a more than decent 2D sidescroller adventure.

Story: Your an alien that crash lands on earth, and so you must survive against an onslaught of FBI agents as well as other forms of baddies on your way to freedom. And only the guiding hand of a chubby kid to help you. (lol)

Graphics: Exactly what you'd expect from a Newgrounds flash game. And it looks fairly decent, especially Alien Hominid HD. Its 2D and if you know Newgrounds style... then you know what to expect.

Gameplay: Pretty simple all around, you have an alien blaster that shoots unlimited ammo. You can acquire power ups while playing that give you extra shielding and weapon boost that can give you all different types of upgraded damage and mechanics. You have grenades, in limited supply, which are mostly effective against groups of smaller enemies, and a knife/melee attack which can also be used to jump onto and bite off enemy heads (its pretty sweet). Most weapon shots move slowly enough that you must dodge or jump to avoid getting hit, pretty much like any old-skool sidescroller back in the day. This can be very difficult when there are baddies pouring from both sides shooting you. The boss fights are fun and challenging as well, which follow the game plan of "memorize move sequence: dodge attacks; Find weak point: Hit for massive damage" Although this is much easier said than done. It really is a challenging game, and creates a lot of nostalgia for the old games I used to play on NES/SNES and gameboy (original and color mind you). But the game itself is very well done in its own right, with different levels sometimes having interesting twists to them [Such as jumping to and from various cars on a highway while battling a giant robot; Playing simon says to avoid getting electrocuted by a giant computer]. It keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting the whole way through, and it it is a pretty long game.

All in all: A very good first outing for little behemoth studios, who has Castle Crashers under its belt now as well, which I recommend. The game does feel a little aged in comparison to Castle Crashers, and those who weren't born with 2D games might not be interested (I know I'm not old enough to enjoy text based adventures, or anything made before the NES) I would say a decent BUY.
