A Short Hike

You play as a bird, Claire (looks penguin-esque to me). You are in a mountain retreat, and want to climb the Hawk Peak in order to get a good phone signal and make a phone call. Probably a very legitimate motivation for today’s generation.

As you venture along the mountain paths, you will meet all kinds of animal characters. Some of which give you side-quests. You collect some coins and buy a Golden Feather from the shop. You learn that these aid your jumping/gliding, and climbing ability and so you need to collect these to reach the top of the mountain.

I really enjoyed the exploration and the mountain seems well designed. Many paths branch off, and it’s a good idea to explore them to collect coins on the ground, or find more valuable stashes in treasure chests. You can find some Golden Feathers out in the open, some are from side-quests, and some are purchased from certain characters.

Like the game’s title suggests, it is a short game, only lasting around an hour unless you choose to explore in great detail and complete all side-quests. The fishing mechanic is one distraction that I didn’t spend too much time on (I caught 3 different species).

The graphics are incredibly pixelated but you can tweak a filter in the options in order to smooth it out. I think it’s a well-made game, and has a nice soundtrack. I felt you get a good feeling from the exploration, and could easily see myself enjoying a longer version of the game.
