Another early NES title gets the 3D makeover...

Urban Champion often gets a bad rap for being too simple for its own good. The goal is to knock your opponent back into a new screen with well-placed punches before the timer expires. You need to avoid potted plants dropped out of windows, and when the cops drive by, the fighting pauses temporarily (though the timer keeps going). That's it. Plain and simple.

Back in the day, can you imagine paying the full $50-$60 price on a title such as this one? At the time, I was too young to grasp the concept of just what those prices meant to my parents' wallets, and I just wanted them in my collection. Any of them. ALL of them. This was among the old "black box" games I desperately wanted as a part of my catalogue, but never got.

As days wore on, my collection grew, but I was relegated to renting titles every few weekends or so. $5 was a price I could more or less associate with, since it was the price of a lunch at my school's cafeteria. I rented Urban Champion on a few different occasions, and oddly enough, never seemed to get bored of it.

While the 3D effects in this game are limited, you do get a bit of depth with the city skyline in the background and the police cars in the foreground. The trailers for this game advertised an isometric look in certain parts, but as far as I can tell, that was not actually incorporated into the game.

In the end, the 3D Classics edition of Urban Champion is definitely not a bad buy at just over five bucks. Definitely worth a day of skipping your school cafeteria's sloppy joe.
