Even with all my complaining, "Tomorrow never dies" is not a bad game

User Rating: 4.5 | 007: Tomorrow Never Dies (Platinum) PS
The game follows the story of the movie and plays as a third person shooter.

Graphics:
It feels like the graphics engine is pretty cool, but that the backgrounds lack details. The animations are mostly smooth but don't always execute without problems. There are also many glitches, like in the second mission where you are to photograph a helicopter behind a stack of crates. Now, what you are SUPPOSED to do is to plant a bomb on the crates to blow a hole in the stack so you can take out the baddies inside and take your precious photo of the helicopter but if you stand near the crates at a certain angle, they disappear and you can take the picture "through" the boxes without going in. In the hotel mission, in the parking-lot, there's a store-room where you can stack up on ammo and armor (you also call for the elevator in this room), but if you're not quick the guards will come and shoot you through the door! Things like these occur throughout the game and affect the graphics as well as the gameplay. There's also lagging, when many enemies are on-screen at the same time. That said, there are a lot of variety in the levels, and you get some real footage from the movie including the WHOLE bond-song/intro which is awesome. Unfortunately, pop-ups are not few and far apart...

Sound:
The 007-theme is of course playing every now and then. The weapon-sounds are cool and work well but are nothing special. I find the voice-acting to be good overall. The best thing about the audio in this game is probably the re-mix of the 007-theme. A problem which occurs on some of the more open levels is that sniper-fire is silent! This would have made sense if the sniper rifle were equipped with a silencer, but it's not because when you pick it up and use it, makes the rifle sound. This is annoying because you just "oufh!" and loose a bar of life and you have no idea who's shooting you or from where. In Hokkaido, when you're on skis, Bond sounds like a little wimp and that sounds really annoying.

Game-play:
Aforementioned issues aside, there are even MORE annoying aspects of the gameplay. The auto-aiming works very badly and after two or three levels you just stop using it and rely on the manual aiming instead (which is activated by pressing and holding R1), the stupid AI is contrasted by excellent marksmanship and you're up against what seems to be elite-forces (in terms of shooting). The part of the game where you drive a car works surprisingly well though and is a lot of fun. Sometimes when you are low on health you might want to dash through a door and lick your wounds, but the moment you open the door you twirl around and start running towards the enemy. There are many annoyances like this. A cool thing is that when you complete the missions, you start the next level with the amount of lives you had at the completion of the previous. This is a good thing because you can always go back and try any mission again and try to finish it with more remaining lives to make the next level easier to finish. Also, as a last thing, the final boss is a huge disappointment. Even with all my complaining, "Tomorrow never dies" is not a bad game, it just doesn't succeed very well in anything. There are better car-games, there are better third-person shooters, there are better stealth-games.

Lastability:
The story is obviously a cool one, since it's based on the movie with the same name, and I think that after you've finished it on "Agent" difficulty you're burnt out on the game-play. However, if you want the most out of your game, try the "007" difficulty for a greater challenge. It's also easy to access the completed levels and the unlocked movies but the thing is; if you're looking for this kind of action there are so many games that are better so why bother to re-play this one?

Overall:
An annoying but sometimes fun average 3rd person shooter.
