I’ve seen people say things like 30FPS is ”unplayable”, which I hardly find the case. Most of the time, my eyes get used to it. I played the entirety of FF7 Rebirth in 30FPS and had a great time.. Some of my favorite games were 30FPS, perhaps even below that (Ocarina Of Time and Tears of the Kingdom come to mind) and in more recent news, the latest Paper Mario Remake will be 30 FPS vs the 60FPS of the original.

https://gamerant.com/paper-mario-thousand-year-door-switch-frame-rate-performance/

The frame rate for the upcoming Nintendo Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is 30 FPS. This modern rendition of Intelligent Systems' beloved 2004 RPG is set to be released on May 23.

Previews of the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake recently went live, providing people with the opportunity to closely check out the game's many visual upgrades. While the remake retains the unique art style gamers first encountered in the 2004 original, it has received updated high-definition assets and improved lighting, further enhancing the classic's already charming paper craft presentation. However, Intelligent Systems, the veteran Japanese studio that also worked on the GameCube original, seemingly had to make one big concession to accommodate the visual uplifts of the remake.

According to a report by Nintendo Life, the preview of the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake ran at 30 FPS, compared to the GameCube version's 60. Fortunately, there were no other reported downgrades with the game, which ran perfectly and exhibited zero frame drops whether played in docked mode or not. In addition to having better visuals, the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake has an updated soundtrack, as well as several new characters and gameplay features. It also received a number of tweaks and quality-of-life improvements that many players, especially those who played the original game, will most likely welcome with open arms.

Still looks good to me! What about you, SW? Is 30FPS a dealbreaker for you?

Ah the good old Fps debate. No, it doesn’t influence my choice of buying games. 30 frames per second is good enough, for me.

No. That TTYD will be 30 when it was 60 on GC kinda sucks though.

It's not a deal breaker but boy does it suck.

Consoles have to get away from the trend of targeting ridiculous resolutions and sacrifice them for frames if necessary. I would take a 720p game at 60FPS before a 4K game at 30fps.

In the case of Paper Mario, it's probably not that big of a deal but I'm referring to multiplayer and other difficult games where in most cases responsiveness and smoothness should take precedence over detail.

No.

I’ll choose the 60fps option in my games when given the opportunity but if a game is only 30fps I’ll play it just fine. Would have been nice if Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was at 60fps but it’s still a day one purchase for me.

30fps is more fitting for this game. Hell, even 15fps would be fine for this game.

Kinda. In 2024 you'll have a very hard time convincing me that the design motivations justify targeting 30fps. Artistic vision be damned.

It's not unplayable, but it's enough of a reason for me to decide I don't need to spend money on it. Especially since the GC version still holds up so well.

I am curious how they failed to get it running at a proper frame rate tho.

For most types of games: No. I'll happily play at 30. 60 would be nice though. I would be prepared to make a few cuts to get a game to 60 on the PC. Beyond 60: I don't care. I tried 144 and was not impressed. I wouldn't sacrifice anything to try and hit >60. I can't even be bothered enabling it on my current screen.

The only games i play where i would get more picky on FPS are

1) VR. I prefer 90+. I tend to feel motion sickness more at lower framerates.

2) Racing games. I'd definitely want those at 60FPS too (or definitely well clear of 30 at least). I'd imagine beat em ups would also fall under that too if i played those. FPSs, i don't really play many of them and haven't played one at 30FPS in a long long time. But, especially with a mouse, i can imagine playing at 30 would be a pain. I think i played UT 2003/4 at 30FPS back in the day though...my PC didn't have the chops for 60 at the time.

The main thing is consistency. As long as the framerate is consistent i'm generally happy out.

As for TTYD: it's fine for that type of game. But a strange compromise considering the GC original ran at 60. It wouldn't put me off getting the game though.

I mean it is a dealbreaker, but TTYD's gameplay is slow.

Also the Switch is old and long in the tooth so I can definitely understand it.

But playing any fast paced action game at 30fps?

No. I've played some games at 20fps like Zelda Ocarina of Time or 12fps like Star Fox. 30fps is fine.

Back then there weren't any examples of open world games running at more than 20fps or 3D games on SNES running at more than 12.

It all comes down to a persons frame of reference.

Kinda like a mobile gamer not being aware that gaming can be so much more than being ripped off and being made the fool.

@R4gn4r0k: I played them on the Wii VC and there were those types of games at the time on 360 and PS3.

I play some games at 120+fps, some at 60fps, some at 30 and maybe lower nowadays anyway, it depends on the game or the platform. Even the same game, it could run better on my PS5 or my gaming PC, and lower on my laptop or my Steam Deck, but I just play whatever game in whatever way suits me best at the time.

A higher FPS can be nice but I can still have fun if it isn't playing at the highest fps available.

Not a deal breaker, but I'll take lower resolution and higher frame rate pretty much every time.

It is pretty shitty. I tried playing a Shantae game at 30fps, couldn’t. Turned off the cap and the game was playing at bazillion speed, uninstalled and went to a different game.

I played the Pirate’s Curse. I enjoyed it and it ran fine (60fps). I was having trouble with Half-Genie Hero running at a decent framerate. I just put it on wishlist for PS5, will grab it when goes on sale.

@SOedipus: I see. Well, I just didn’t want your expectations of Shantae games to be dashed by one experience. I also played pirates curse, and I loved the game a lot. Shantae is a good experience, I don’t know how the developer gets these good fresh ideas.

It was when I bought PS4. I couldn't stand to play some of the later-gen games on that thing because they were so slow.

I think people that say otherwise just haven't really enjoyed 60+ fps often enough to know what they're missing out on.

With that said, not all games (or even genres) really benefit from higher than 30 fps, but at the same time those games are ironically not really the most visually demanding, either. I'm speaking of genres like turn-based strategy in particular.

No. It is not! FFS, I'm re-playing New Vegas and that FPS is unstable as f***! Everyone, including me, and the most snobbish on frames per second LOVES that game (at least, forums want you to think so...)

No, tbh I don’t pay attention or notice if a game is 30 or 60 fps. As long as the gameplay is fun that’s the biggest part for me.

lol im replaying it too. Altho I did use some mods to uncap it to 120fps and physics fix. And a crapton of texture mods.

The dealbreaker is not the frame rate for the Thousand-Year Door, but the removal of offensive dialogue in the remake where in the original game a group of Goombas made catcalls towards Goombella. I am surprised that Nintendo did not remove the dialogue when the original game was released on the GameCube 20 years ago but changed the gender of a feminine-looking male character and removed rabbit ears from a female character.

It's good enough for me. It's not ideal, it's OK. I wouldn't object to playing a game for the sole reason of it running at 30 frames per second.

I probably have, but I'm not positive if I have played a game at 60 fps or higher. I've SEEN games being played at that, but I wasn't in control. So if I haven't, that means everything I've played has been below that, and I've never had a problem. But if I had to trade between pushing graphics to realistic levels or making everything PS2/3 quality, but with perfect stability... I would choose the latter.

Camera motion is the biggest factor. A fixed camera perspective game could have 20 and probably be fine. Without VRR things that don't evenly divide the container do have judder which creates irregular motion, but beyond that divisiblity property we really just need enough to show the motion clearly. If the camera or entities of the game aren't moving fast, you don't need a high frame rate.

Obviously a 1st person shooter is a common use case where universally more is better: 60 being good and 120 being great. But I find a 2d platformer where the character can move at a decent clip it's super important as well so you have good continuity for all objects as they pass by.

Depends on the game for me. If i'm playing an old game or something that isn't graphically intensive or reflex demanding like Persona or and RTS, 30 FPS is tolerable. Anything else that's a First Person, Open World, or combat intensive game I want way more than 30 FPS. I would not play a games like Cyberpunk, Dying Light 2, or Deathloop at 30 FPS.

I do subscribe to the argument that 30fps fits a certain look in games. But it really depends on the game. the cinematic looks helps with adventure games, but a racing game it doesn’t help as much .

I think the TC needs to try new things.....while you can get use to 30fps. 60fps is a lot better and you would see this if you gave it a chance. One can also say you can get use to 60fps too...lol. but srsly there is a noticable difference.

More frames is always better. But playing the Switch at 30fps and Steam Deck at 40fps/higher settings has made me a little more tolerant. But given the choice (or playing a competitive multiplayer game) I am team 144+

Depends on what i'm playing. Certain games are fine at 30fps, but I prefer 60+. I've yet to stress-test my 4080S, but 4K@120 is still a little out of the GPU's league. Was hoping to hold out for the 5 series.

I primarily play on a beef pc so don't ever deal with 30fps. With that said I would play at that fps for certain games on console if no other choice I guess, not a huge deal so long as it is genre appropriate.
