The Mortal Kombat games have always been about overkill, letting players not only defeat their opponents, but kill them in gruesome and humiliating fashion as well. So it's only fitting that the next game in the series will not only have a limited premium edition, but one that will arrive in stores under not just one cover, but four.

Midway today announced that the PlayStation 2 Premium Edition version of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will arrive in stores this October with a selection of metallic covers: three featuring some of the series' gruesome twosomes, and one reprising the standard edition's cover art. The pairs in question are Kano and Sonya, Sindel and Shao Kahn, and Johnny Cage and Goro.

The $49.95 price tag for the Premium Edition sets includes more than just shiny packaging. Each set also includes a full playable version of the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 arcade game, more than an hour of bonus videos (including a piece on the history of fatalities), and "animation cell cover art autographed by franchise creator, Ed Boon."

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is set for a PlayStation 2 and Xbox release on October 9, with a Wii version to follow in the first quarter of 2007.
