On the surface, it may appear to a good game. But wait until you play it (or better yet, don't.)

User Rating: 4 | Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon CDI
Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Link: The Faces of Evil are generally considered to be among the worst games of all time. Many Zelda fans refuse to acknowledge their existence or accept them as part of the official canon (although they were officially licensed by Nintendo.) Most people, though, probably don't know much about them except that they suck. I decided to get both games and play them to see just how bad they are.

CUTSCENES: More people have probably seen the poorly drawn cutscenes in the game than the actual gameplay. The overall style is OK, but the animation is bad and the voice acting even worse.

MUSIC: The music is undeniably the best aspect of these games (although many would probably say the style just doesn't match the medieval/old European tone of the games.) Overall, pretty good.

GRAPHICS: The game's graphics are hand-drawn and richly detailed. Unfortunately, that factors negatively into the game because the beautifully detailed drawings offer too much detail for the player to make certain move such as jumping or climbing, which can be very precise in this game. Too often, you will find yourself dying or having to repeat an area because you are forced to jump on ledges that blur into the background.

CONTROL: By far, the worst aspect of this game is the controls, which are unbelievably awkward. You find yourself pressing up to jump, down and button 2 to access the menu, etc. Also, if you want to talk to someone or grab an item, you need to stab them.

DIFFICULTY: The game's difficulty level is horrendous. It's largely due to the awkward controls, but the blurry graphics (and also the fact that you have no invincibility frames) compound the problem. Even the simplest enemies can kill you almost immediately. Also, enemies tend to respawn ceaselessly (even in towns) and many are either flying or low to the ground, making attacks tedious.

STORY: The king of Hyrule has journeyed to Gamelon to help the mysterious Duke Ongklet (who is supposedly being attacked). He doesn't return after a month, so Link goes in search of him. After more time passes, Zelda decides that it's up to her to find out what happened to them and so she sets out for Gamelon.

The basic plot isn't bad, but the story is really a mess throughout the game. The story is usually provided through the cutscenes, in which random, nameless characters appear and immediately give you something or offer you something in return for a favor. Also, new characters and events are ushered in without any backstory.

Overall, the game isn't as bad as many people believe, but it's not a fun experience and anyone thinking about buying it should stick to watching to just watching videos. The horrible controls and insane difficulty cancel out any enjoyment that could be derived from The Wand of Gamelon.
