The single-greatest story I have ever seen presented in a video game. It even rivals the great classics of literature.

User Rating: 10 | Xenogears: Elyhaym Van Houten Edition (Square Millennium Collection) PS
Of all the video games and RPGs I have played in my lifetime, none has invoked more thought in me than Xenogears. It's like a great book. It hooks you, and once you're in, you simply cannot put it down until you are completely finished with it. The controls are relatively unique for an RPG; the character and gear battles each have their own quirks, but its nothing that cannot be worked around. Sound and graphics combine in a way that makes you feel like you're there, whether deep in a forest or climbing a legendary tower. The anime cutscenes really are a nice touch; again, nothing seen before in a video game, but definitely since. In terms of plot, character development, and intellectual references, Xenogears is nonpareil. This game makes Final Fantasy VII look like The Cat in the Hat. Deep stuff; definitely not a weekend rental. If you are a fan of either Nietzschean philosophy, or giant robots, in the form of an incredible RPG, then this game is definitely for you.
