X-Men Legends acts as a great example on how a comic book game should be done. Unlike some of the other "games" bearing the title "X-Men," this one does not rely on movie hype or popular fads, it relies on good gameplay and an immersive story. Additionally, the aspect of being multiplayer also gives a lot to the game itself. Eventhough a huge plus for the game is the way it does multiplayer, it starts off with a single player level in which the player assumes the role of Wolverine. However, it doesn't take that long to add an additional player as you make your way through the level, you will find Cyclops to play as. Other levels after this will have at least 3 or more playable at a time. The only other time only one player can play is when you are exploring the Xavier Mansion as a young X-Man named Magma, these exploration sequences do not take long at all as the only take place between missions. So this hardly takes away from the enjoyment of playing with 3 other friends. The gameplay itself is pretty simple. The ability to level up and allot skill points in certain areas for a mutant's powers make it feel like you're playing Diablo while the fighting aspect makes it feel like you're playing an old school beat'em up type game. These two elements mix together pretty well as it allows players to customize how their character's abilities while maintaining simple and fun gameplay. The story in the game is actually pretty good. It should be very pleasing to any X-Men fan as in this one story you have to deal with Magneto, the Brotherhood, the Sentinal Program, Magma learning to control her powers, and various other plot turns that make this game a lot more immersive. Also throughout the story, many other X-Men become unlockable as you make your way through the missions. The game's sound is nothing too impressive, but it certainly does not take away from the gameplay. Fans of the movie and cartoon series may recognize certain voices such as Patrick Stewart actually coming in and doing the voice for Professor Charles Xavier. Additionally, most of the game has pretty decent voice acting. On the graphical side of things, the game can lack. The cell shading effects give the game a sort of stylish look, but when the game camera closes in on the characters, the can at times appear to have no face at all. There are, however, several FMV's that make up for the lack of good graphics. Eventhough you can pick from 15 different X-Men throughout the game, some of them can be pretty worthless, while others will be put in your party in almost every level. Characters like Wolverine, Cyclops, and Iceman will be needed for strong strikes, powerful long distance attacks, and the ability to build bridges respectively. Then there are characters like Jubilee who have nothing to do with the game's story and has no better abilities than any other teamate. The same can be said for mutant powers. There are just some put in the game that only elitists will level up. However, this does not dampen the experience whatsoever as this game takes several good things and makes something great. All in all, X-Men Legends is a simple and fun game. This game is perfect for those who are huge (or even casual) X-Men fans as it has several comic book references or just for those who are looking to get introduced to the game's genre. Hopefully, other comic book licences will get the same treatment in the future.
