ein folk,ein reich,ein fuhrer...no,this is not the fuhrer,anyway it's the first fps ever.
this american soldier,will go from the p.o.w. status all the way up becoming a hero-a world hero.he will stop the mad plans of hitler himself & all his pawns in 55 levels(or floors) divided into 6 episodes-9 levels each. filled with puzzles, fierce enemies,monsters,secrets & treasures.the names of the episodes:escape from wolfenstein,operation eisenfaust,die,fuhrer,die(lol),a dark secret,trail of the madman & confrontation.
there are 5 types of enemies-dogs,soldiers with pistols,frankestein like monsters,baddies in white with more damage pistols & baddies in blue with machineguns.you have a very small inventory of weapons:knife,pistol,machine-gun & chain-gun.since the knife doesn't count,you have only 3 weapons.but it's enough to make it very enjoyable.
despite it's name,wolf3d is not a 3d game at all.it's called so because of the 3d perspective it has.same thing is available for the duke nukem series.both made by id software that also created the doom & quake series.man!it's the best company developing video-games along with blizzard,eidos:),square/enix,westwood & ea.
the graphics are 2d like i said & comparing them with doom,they are very simple.the main characteristic is that there are no height differences,no descending,no ascending,no climbing,no jumping but it fits perfect with the idea of a floor.the music is primitive,made up from midi sequences.
the whole game is basically a puzzle.it's very frustrating at episodes 5 & 6 especially.you have to go thorugh endless tunnels & corridors & at every corner a natzi awaits you.
in most of the levels,you have to find 2 types of keys to unlock special doors that lead to the elevator.making an overall scheme,plan,the game looks like this:rusty key-gold key-elevator.at the boss levels the situation varies-some of them are with no key,others with 1 & others with both.
the most interesting part of the game takes place at the boss level of episode 4 where you have to kill hitler.you expected to fight him at the end of the game-slight dissapointment.
nowadays,wolf3d looks very outdated but it has the honour of being called the first fps in history.
