Gamespot and critics must have played a different game - this is probably the most fun I've ever had playing a racer.
Whiplash had everything - progressive damage to your car, pit stops, loops, jumps, twisted jumps, tunnel racing, car modification, unlockable cheats...i could go on....
I intended to give this game just a good rating - but lookign back this game was amazing. It also gave you the option to play 2 players on the same keyboard which was WEIRD but it worked.
My brother and I learned how to move the keyboard just right to screw the other person up :P
Anyways, the game featured this nutso announcer as well that would yell and tell you to speed up, encourage you or comment on the mayhem and the damage.
There were progressive tournaments and races compiled stats, etc.
What I'm saying is this game is a hidden gem - and it should be in the running for one of the best racing games of all time.
