Delightful interactive film with no shortage of poignant moments

User Rating: 8 | What Remains of Edith Finch NS

The average score here seems spot on. This game is an accomplished piece of storytelling, with relatively little gameplay and nothing in the vein of combat or puzzle mechanics. Even taken at a leisurely pace, this episodic tale concludes in about 2.5 hours.

The frame narrative of the story is told through a voiceover narration by the player character, Edith Finch, the last surviving member of a family that believes itself to be cursed. The purported family curse results in virtually all members of the family dying premature and improbable deaths. Edith returns home after a particularly notable death in the family, and begins to explore the family home. As she explores the different rooms, each of which belonged to a deceased family member and which serve as a time capsule filled with mementos of their too-brief lives, Edith learns more of her family's unfortunate history.

Some of these vignettes really soar and have a haunting, nostalgic quality. Others are more forgettable. The whole is well-paced and captivating, and I suspect most players will complete it in one sitting.

My only advice is to wait for the regular sales on the PSN store when this game drops to $7.99. Compared to the usual $20 price, that's a significant discount, and makes this short pleasurable diversion a great value.
