Don't be fooled by Wendy's childish appearance. This is one of the very best games to ever hit GBC.

User Rating: 9.5 | Wendy: Every Witch Way GBC
Wendy: Every Witch Way is an absolute masterpiece in every sense of the word. You, playing as a young witch named Wendy, will play across 16 levels, attempting to get back all of the gravity orbs you accidentally set free when you opened up a chest in your house. The release of the gravity orbs has caused a huge castle to fall down to the ground, where it will remain until all the gravity orbs are put back into that little chest. Sure, a very simple storyline, but that, quite frankly, doesn't matter one bit, seeing as how the entire game is absolutely spectacular gameplay wise.

The gameplay in Wendy: Every Witch Way is near perfect. The game uses the buttons on the GameBoy nearly perfectly, allowing you to pull off some quite satisfying maneuvers. You'll be able to change gravity in the game, simply by pressing the A button with either Up or Down to change gravity in the respective direction. You'll also shoot little energy balls with your wand by pressing B. In order to get more powerful attacks and essentially "level-up", you'll collect little stars. Each star pushes you up a level, level six being the highest. This may seem like it's a little too easy to level-up, right? Not quite. Every single time you're damaged, be it by an environmental hazard or an enemy, you'll lose a star. Lose all your stars, and you die. You have 5 lives at the start of each level, and if you run out of lives, it's game over, you lose your checkpoint, and you have to start the entire level over from scratch. My only real problem with the controls here is the fact that occasionally you might change gravity when you weren't intending to, causing you to fall to your death. It was annoying, especially on the Hard difficulty mode, where spikes are transformed into insta-death spikes a la Mega Man, but it's really quite forgivable seeing as how it doesn't happen often and the controls are otherwise perfect.

The level design in Wendy is absolutely brilliant. You'll have to utilize your powers in unique and interesting ways to traverse the many environments, and as mentioned quite clearly above, that's pretty damn fun. Plus, there are an extra 3 (and painfully difficult) levels that can only be accessed by plugging the game into a GameBoy Advance, which is a nice little bonus. My only problem with the Advance Worlds is the fact that all the platforms glow on and off, just to try and throw you off, but that usually just results in either extreme annoyance or a headache. But really, all these levels are just so well put together that minor flaw can easily be overlooked. The flaw that CAN'T really be overlooked is... well... this game is short. Like, real short. I beat the Normal, Hard, and Advance Worlds modes all in just two days. There's an unlockable Super Mode, but that's all that does is make it so that you always have the most powerful attack, no matter how many stars you have. You will want to replay this game many times, though, but still, you've been warned...

The graphics in Wendy are also quite a treat. This stuff is just amazing for the GBC, and it still holds up pretty well, even by today's standards. There are three layers, a backround, the platforms, and the foreground. This adds some nice depth to the playing field. Also, there's a lot of detail in the environments, and the character design are pretty genius too (Well, except for the slug ones. Those were just... slugs). But the really impressive thing here is the animation. It's just so smooth and incredible. The way that Wendy's hair and hood just flap in the wind, and the way that her walking cycles are just so clean and smooth, and the way that she shuffles here arms and feet while standing still, and occasionally blinks her eyes, it's all pretty astounding. Even the enemies that you probably won't be able to pay as much attention to are beautifully, beautifully animated. All in all, this game is some serious eye candy.

Well, that just about sums up how I feel about Wendy: Every Witch Way. A great game with incredible graphics and amazing gameplay, it's just a shame this game is a little on the short side. Still, if you can find this little gem of a GBC game, you should pick it without a second thought. I still can't believe that I got this for free because somebody in my school didn't want it anymore.
