World War 3 Could Be Your Battlefield Game This Year

World War 3 is gunning for Battlefield V. We're going to see if an early access modern shooter can take on the established WW2 champ.

World War 3 is the newest game created by The Farm 51, a developer responsible for 2017's survival horror game Get Even. A tactical multiplayer first-person shooter, World War 3 shares a lot of features and mechanics with earlier Battlefield games. With World War 3 now in Steam early access, we jumped into a few matches to see how it stacks up in comparison to the Battlefield franchise.

In the video above, Aaron Sampson breaks down the pros and cons of World War 3 and compares the title's early access gameplay with what we've experienced in Battlefield V's alpha and beta. He then compares both titles to Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 to figure out which one is closer to capturing the classic experience of DICE's first-person shooter series. Bear in mind, this video looks at early versions of World War 3 and Battlefield V, so these comparisons are subject to change.

Between World War 3 and Battlefield V, the former has a game loop that rewards players for doing their job. You earn tanks for playing the objective in World War 3, for example, while Battlefield 5 drops tanks on the map randomly--allowing someone who hasn't been working with the group to jump into the vehicle before anyone else has the chance. World War 3 also has a more varied map structure, utilizing massive battlegrounds that include unique set pieces--like underground subways--for varied means of attack and vertical combat.

That said, Battlefield V has a lot going for it too. Environments are far more destructive in Battlefield V. Matches also don't take too long, as opposed to World War 3's 30-minute rounds, and it's more difficult to spawn kill. World War 3 is just in a rougher form right now, with bugs causing tanks to fly through the air and the sound design lacking Battlefield 5's realism.

Between the two games, it seems like World War 3 is a continuation of what players enjoyed in previous Battlefield games, while Battlefield V is transforming the tried-and-true formula into something new. Let us know in the comments below which of the two you're more excited to play.

World War 3 is only available on PC right now, but The Farm 51 is considering bringing the game to console as well. Battlefield V launches on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 20. DICE's game has a full year's worth of free post-launch DLC planned, including its Firestorm battle royale mode which launches in March 2019.
