With Cyberpunk 2077, The World Is All About Freedom

At Gamescom 2018, Richard Borzymowski from CD Projekt Red chats with us about Cyberpunk 2077, the massive scale of Night City, and what freedom should mean to the player.

Few games can generate as much buzz as Cyberpunk 2077 has without showing gameplay. Until now, the only thing developer CD Projekt Red has publicly shown of its upcoming open-world RPG is a short cinematic trailer and a few screenshots, and yet, it has become one of the most anticipated PS4, Xbox One, and PC games. In large part, this is based off word from those that have seen the game being played behind closed doors, but also the incredible experience the studio delivered with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

CD Projekt Red is quickly become one of the most prestigious video game developers in the business, so expectations for Cyberpunk 2077 are high. It's no surprise, then, that it's keeping its cards close to its chest. At Gamescom 2018 it showed off the same demo that was at E3 2017 a few months earlier--and it was still impressive to see the second time. Subsequently, the developer at long last released this footage to the public; you can now watch almost an hour of Cyberpunk gameplay.

During Gamescom, GameSpot was able to sit down with Cyberpunk 2077 producer Richard Borzymowski to discuss the game, and while he avoided delving too deep into the nitty-gritty of gameplay, he did speak to the kind of freedom that players will get to experience while in Night City, and what it will mean to them.

Prior to the gameplay demo's release, CD Projekt Red shared four new Cyberpunk 2077 screenshots, which were captured from the demo (as well as some new concept art). During this chunk of the game, main character V is hired by Dexter DeShawn, a big player in the dog-eat-dog society of Night City, to broker a deal with a gang and acquire an incredibly powerful piece of technology. At the same time, a representative from a Corp also wants in on the action and tires to use V to achieve objective.

As of yet, Cyberpunk 2077 does not have a release date, but it will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. CD Projekt Red first confirmed it was working on a title based on Mike Pondsmith's acclaimed pen and paper game RPG game in 2012.

@proceeder: its not happening ever. the game is design sololy for single player. dont like it? then i guess the game isnt for you if the view point is that big of a deal to you.

@kiggor: You know, I'm a Mech Eng.

We do enough math to know what making a definite statement means.

I guess you're not, cause it seems you don't.

Here are some examples of videogames with fictional worlds that use a 3rd person cam competently:

-GTAV

-Mass Effect

-Elder Scrolls & Fallout (after 3)

-Metal Gear Solid (after 3 subsistence)

-And who'd guess... The Witcher

It appears that integrating a 3rd person cam option is more technically demanding and does not restrict "emersion".

@proceeder: Well, no game is for everyone. I can't imagine playing Bioshock, Deus Ex, Prey or Dishonored in 3rd person. They are some of the most immersive games for a reason.

@v8p: Everyone's entitled to their opinion. May I point out that the car already has a 3rd person cam? Also, I did not mean to ask for a mandatory cam, I meant to ask for the option (my comment was too short, I understand if it was confusing).

@proceeder: the point of the matter is that they said that the game is FPS only. so guess what that means? no third person view. its not happening. the devs said so them self. so yeah....

@kiggor: but what if they do add the option a year or so later? It would encourage sales.

@cyberpunk_2077: because of a simple perspective change? sure if they want too but atm the whole game is design for fps in mind, not third person

@proceeder: No thanks; I'm not a big CoD fan. I am a big immersive first person fan though, so I'll probably play Cyberpunk.

Witcher 3 is very good game in aspect of story. But as an open world and RPG, it is still far behind Skyrim. Sure that ES: 6 and Fallout 76 will sweep CP 2077.

@metin3191: Fallout 76? Did you just compare CP2077 to an MP-only Battle Royale style game?

@siarhei: I don't think Fallout 76 is a battle royale style game. I think it's mostly just a survival game.

@Mogan:

No its mostly a money grab, trying to cash in on the MP craze that is hurting real gaming. But feel free to spend tons of money on repetitive non thinking trash.

@sdzald: If you replaced "MP" with "FPS", your post would sound exactly like what Fallout fans were saying when Fallout 3 was coming out.

@metin3191: Speech: 100.

I mean, it was pretty convincing. I heard they are working to port Skyrim on WearOS and Tizen smartwatches, that should keep you busy for another decade ;)

FPP suck real bad, the appearance of weapons and armor become meaningless, special moves, and in fact almost all moves, have no animation and thus, they too, become almost meaningless.
That being said the Witcher series is one of my all time faves, and I do have high hopes for this one.

@uhtredsson: you are joking right? you see the appearance of the gun best when it is in fps. armor is never meanless because of the different stats it gives. besides you still see how awesome you look in cut scenes and game menus.

Also how the hell does special moves have next to no animation when you clearly do you plenty of them like when the girl climbs on the wall with large blades sticking out of her arm. so almost everything you mention here doesnt really make sense.

@uhtredsson: A 3rd person cam is also more demanding to program, since it needs to detect collision.

There is a mistake in the article in the following sentence : At Gamescom 2018 it showed off the same demo that was at E3 2017 a few months earlier-- I think they mean E3 2018 a few months earlier--

1000s of procedurally generated apartments would be easy to implement nowadays imo, and add a realistic massiveness to a city based world, especially when utilised in side missions (e.g. hidden loot) and give you something to do when you just wanna chill and be a robbing b*stard.

Well, that doesn’t sound like freedom at all if you’re going to tell me to conform to your definition of freedom. :)
