They got paid to give the game a 10... The game is a 7 at best.
The only Metal Gear game that ever deserved a 10 was Metal Gear Solid on the PS1. It was a revolution in game design and just did everything brilliantly. MGS:V is a combination of games we've played before, overly Westernized and repetitive. Probably the grindiest-feeling stealth game I've ever played.
I liked the game, and this is coming from someone who hated the series after MG2, mainly because the story got FUCKING STUPID! Hell, it even got dumb in MGS2. I don't think it deserves a 10 though. Maybe a high 8 or even a 9.
Also... I have yet to run into a single aggressive animal. I heard wolves once... but that's it.
This game reminds me of my youth and getting stuck going on the same camping trip, to the same caravan park every year at Christmas.
It was given because of rampant fanboyism clouding your judgement. The game is good but certainly doesn't merit a perfect 10.
Changing your ratings system arbitrarily later removes journalistic integrity and professionalism from your writing staff and your website. A rating scale of 10/10 changed to 10/11 etc. later on is asinine.
I'd rather you just rerate this game aptly rather than pander to fanboys in your staff. The final rating should be an aggregation of several of your staff rather than one fanboy who cannot see past their own prejudices as they are lost in glee like a 9-yr old girl playing with her doll.
@fanirama: Honestly, this is the type of game that has to be reviewed by a fanboy of the series. This is the final game in a 30 year old series, these games are made specifically with fanboys in mind and not for the everyday he or she that plays video games. There is no in between for this series you either love it or hate it. If they reviewed games the way you suggested where everyone is taken into consideration than we'd have a game that's a 5 out of 10, games should be reviewed by people who already enjoy the genres and aren't forced to play something for a reviews sake.
@fanirama: think you may have missed what 10 means here. it is not a "perfect" rating and that has been explained many times by the staff here. 10 only means that those who enjoy games should definitely try a game. 1 means that those who enjoy games should not bother. 2-9 is just different variables of those two ratings.
where i don't agree that Phantom Pain deserves a better score than GTAV or others with lower scores, it shouldn't bother you or anyone that someone else has a different opinion unless you have some nazi blood still in your dna.
@fanirama: They rated this a 10/10 before the game was released... Your argument is invalid.
@fanirama: A reason I say this is because this game is kinda like Hitman or Splinter Cell which have similar core mechanics of stealth but the proverbial sh__ can hit the fan when you're discovered and then it becomes a salvage this mission. This game is very similar to that approach.
Besides the open world, the game is quite repetitive in its things to do. GTA V has way more variety for its lower score. Hitman in the same genre has way more variety in its approach as well.
I can't even honestly rate MGSV because I simply can't even advance past the first mission. This game is way too hard for me. Trade in credit it is.
why does any one give such a damn what they rate games? can't you watch gameplay segments on your own, read developer information on your own, and judge for yourself? if you're a gamer you've learned that hype and promises mean nothing so why still put so much stake in reviews?
@elessarGObonzo: I remember buying Witcher 2 because it was rated really highly everywhere, regretted that decision. Luckily I got it on a huge discount. 1 year later tried to pick it up again and a big NOPE again. It's exactly the same reason I haven't bought Witcher 3 yet.
Also, to me, Dragon Age Inquisition is overrated. Less fun combat system and less interesting characters than DA: Origin by a long shot. Metal Gear Solid 4 however was and is still an absolute masterpiece to me. I hope MGSV will be the same.
Witcher 3 is completely different to Witcher 2 though. Witcher 2 was much more preparation combat based compared to this one and it wasn't an open world structure. You could very easily die in Witcher 2 just preparing spells incorrectly. It had alot more to it than Witcher 3 in that regard.
Witcher 3 world is more interesting in parts though but the main story is lacking compared to Witcher 2 .
It was far more interesting tracking down a murderer of kings.
Why? Because you need to help sell the game?Is this video trying to give Mad Max's score excuse a better looking?
Watch worth a buys review on YouTube, I'd say it's much more accurate... Game spot reviewers are a strange bunch.
The game has flying burning blue whales that eat attack helicopters, what a bunch of hideo Kojima lunacy.
@pluckybrit: Wow, that is not taken out of context at all. Why people like you choose to leave advise on games they have never played is beyond me. Get a fucking life you poser piece of shit.
@elitegamingguru: Hold your fiddly diddly horses there Ned, I have the game, Mack's review on worth a buy is the more accurate review IMO...is it possible to take flying burning attack helicopter eating blue whales out of context... More importantly is there any context in which that combination should work within a game like MGS?
Not sure your other comments were really justified there, I can't recall posing recently and you're after all the one proclaiming to be the EliteGamingGuru... Irony much? Probably lost on you, much like manners.
My opinion, I'm entitled to it.
@pluckybrit: lol... OK listen, that part was out of context because Snake has a piece of shrapnel stuck in head, which when bumped seems to cause hallucinations. That scene you speak of may be related to this or may be what is really going on, I have not finished the game yet so I do not know for sure. What I do know for sure is that this is a video game, and being such, there is an understanding that this is mostly the imagination of Kojima hard at work. And in this case, using the whale was purely symbolic(Ishmael, the whale), its meaning however still eludes me. This to me is much more rewarding than basing a game off of pure reality, if that were the case I would just join the military. As for the rest of what I said I who knows, maybe your assumptions angered me at the time, sorry.
@elitegamingguru: See, isn't it better when we all get along. Something else about gaming that appears to have degraded across the gaming generational gap. There was a time when gamers got on with other gamers for the love of the game.
Games like MGS V just feel like self indulgent waffle to me, you obviously like Kojima, and that's fine, I personally think he's an egomaniac with delusions of spielburgism. Yes I just made that up. MGS4 was practically one big terribly convoluted MG CGI movie, I prefer games that maintain immersion by avoiding obvious spoilers, this game is full of them.
I do agree to some extent, games are about a release from reality and I've never enjoyed games like Arma, but there is a balance. Now back in your box before a balloon snatches you up and takes you back to motherbase...
I'm just kidding. I respect your opinion, and appreciate the apology. Keep on gaming.
Rockstar should hire Kojima.
Rockstar should hire Kojima.
Nice one brother.
Reviewers hate stealth games.
Reviewers critical of any game with women being sexualized.
Reviewers hate mediocre or little story.
Reviewers are not hype on open world games.
Reviewers FEAR the backlash if they attempt to even criticize any game that makes up their community. EA, Activision, Ubisoft are constant punching bags while anything by Nintendo, Anime and JRPG are overly praised.
The industry from a media stand point needs a complete wipe and new blood integrated with fresh perspectives.
@me3639: "EA, Activision, Ubisoft are constant punching bags..."
There's many a good reason for that, and I'm sure that many here would agree with me on that without needing to write you an essay on the finer points. ;)
@me3639: MGS:V is a Stealth Game. Women in MGS:V are sexualized. MGS:V is Open World. MGS:V is from Konami, and it's not anime ou JRPG.
MGS:V is 10/10, and I still can't understand your point here.
@baggerwild: Witcher 3 also open-world with sexy\ualized women = 10/10. ??
Konami invited all the jurnos to a review "boot camp" with Konami employees watching over their shoulders while they play. Also they were not allowed to play multiplayer/ address some of the concerns about pay gates and such in multiplayer.. So all reviews are skewed. I don't doubt it's a great game but there are variables not explored in their "review". They are being dishonest by withholding this information.
A simple "this review was based on the single player aspect of the game" is all that is needed.
Quiet's outfit was necessary.
'Cause dat ass.
Okay first ign now gamespot. This is starting to look suspicious considering this isn't the first game to get 10/10.
Metal Gear 5 receives a 10/10. Okay. Got it. Now can we please clear the way for more filler articles and "news" about Destiny please? Oh, done? Thanks Gamespot!
No explanation necessary, it looks incredible. Can't wait to play this game!!
Well I have to say that I am very excited to buy this game on my PS4 and get started playing. I was completely shocked to find out just yesterday that the game is coming out next week. I haven't played a game like MSGV in a very long time and I just can't wait to get my hands on it. PlayStation is finally starting to get some very good games on the PS4 and I am pretty sure this is only the start and beginning of great titles to come. I am definitely looking forward to getting this and taking my time playing it.
Paid by the following...
Danny said you killed Mocart. -Moe who? -Zart!
I don't buy into the tin foil stuff - yes, Konami likely lavished a little attention on reviewers who aren't used to ermine and furs, but it does look like a great game (although not my cup of tea).
Where I think Gamespot suffers is that they do not have a distinct framework for reviewing 'types' of games. For example - remakes. On one day, they will hold a game like Gears of War to contemporary standards and justifiably point out flaws. On another, they will simply indulge in nostalgia and slap a nine on game, for, quite literally, old time's sake (I assure you this will happen with Unchartered). The Journey review was ridiculous, but it was probably more of a parting gift to Kevin.
They like to point out that all things are subjective, but there are still rules that can, and should, be applied.
Agreed. MGS 4 scored 10/10 but is was far from perfect.
Long cut scenes
Clucky ass gameplay
But until dawn and deadspace 3 were marked down for story
No need to justify mgsv or witcher with those 10 eveyone agrees on them because theyre masterpieces, the only game that really pisses me off was bayonetta 2 never understanded why the 10 specially with such a shitty protagonist anyway glad mgs v and witcher 3 got 10 this year though they deserved it now only fallout remains
@wolfmgs: I don't. Witcher 3's combat is abysmal. I'd put it at an 8, at best.
@lebowski53: The answer on why witcher 3 got ten is obvious, 15 secondary missions could be a full packed game today, the production value is just inmense yeah you dont have the technical level of design in combat as other games like in dmc but this is an open world arpg you must remember that and to call it abysmal not really, my only concern was with groups of enemies 1 on 1 the combat is pretty awesome
@wolfmgs @lebowski53: enjoy any Witcher's combat over any Devil May Cry's any day. those DMC games were the most boring button-mashers with lights just flashing away during combat. while to me Witcher games have had very fluid sensible combat.
It's cool to have articles like this to justify the given score. Kevin was my favorite reviewer in latest years,it disappointed me when he left GS,the guy was legend!!! What i'm trying to say, this is a great review and looking at all these comments about it,doubt that Kevin would give MGSV a lower score than this.
@Tenkuryu: he's also the guy that gave Alien Isolation a terrible review, that was my favourite game of the year. Reviews should be conducted by a several reviewers and a discussion to decide on a score not biased by what kind of games you like.
