What Are Teraflops And Do They Matter For PS5 And Xbox Series X/S

Jean-Luc gives you a quick breakdown on what exactly teraflops are and what that means for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

"Teraflops" has become a marketing buzzword in the last few years as a way for platform holders to express how powerful their new hardware is. But what exactly are Teraflops and are they as important for gaming as they are made out to be?

In this short video, Jean-Luc breaks down the basics of Teraflops so that next time you hear Phil Spencer talk about it on stage, you’ll know what he’s talking about. The long short of it is that while teraflops can be a good benchmark for performance, it's important to consider the other many factors that can impact your video game experience.

If you enjoyed this video why not check out our explainer on HDMI 2.1 and what it means for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. And if your just as excited for new consoles as we are, make sure to tune in to Generation Next, our weekly show where Lucy James, Tamoor Hussain, and Jordan Ramée talk everything related to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Assets get loaded into ram.

Ram is much faster than the Rom in Hard Drive. There is different types of Ram and Rom.

XBOX series has some faster Ram Than PS5.

The actual Hard Drive actual speed difference will probably be small and maybe even negligible in many video games.

Ultimate DirectX 12 may or not have better API tools and better optimization than what PS5 is using.

PS5 has variable frequency for the processor to budget power this could be bad.

IMO if the PS5 and the XBOX series APU and Ram were more similar in performance and speed I would agree the the faster PS5 Hard Drive would make a huge difference but PS5 comes up short in some areas.

One thing for sure is Tempest 3D Virtual Surround seems forced on the PS5 user, money could have been budgeted somewhere else in the PS5. Maybe Sony put Tempest 3D in the PS5 to keep the sale cost of the new PS VR visor low? PS VR comes with a virtual surround processor, the console that comes with PS VR.

Not really a fan of Microsoft’s and Sony’s BLAST PROCESSING sales pitch, not all video game players are kids.

I surprised there views are all "video" at this point

Teraflops are no longer a good measure of raw performance. They're great for spec sheets but they're misleading.

@lostn: Why not? Mark Cerny said same thing but not explain why... he try to pitch why of lower the Teraflops, lower the storage size, why buy expensive tempest audio and that may disadvantage to deaf players.

@lostn: Teraflops is a good measure of raw power, I don’t think you know what raw power means.

Hard Drive is not the processor the processor processes. Hard Drive stores. Faster Hard Drive helps but the processor’s job is a very important step.

If the video game console was a factory the

Hard Drive is the storage room where you keep the parts the Processor puts the parts together to make the product.

Sony’s pitch is that the Ram and Processor is so fast that Rom is the bottleneck? Processor is fast for a video game processor but so fast that what is available for storage for PC now is not fast enough?

Nah. They are still quite useful in comparing hardware from the same company and generation. Amd tf vs nvidia tf? Not useful. Amd 2019 rdna tf vs Amd 2014 gcn? Not useful. Amd rdna 2 vs amd rdna 2? Useful.

The short answer is a Teraflop is a 1,000 Gigs so 12 Teraflops is 12 thousand gigs it's a STUPID amount of data TBH

I think Sony's advantage with the better throughput of the SSD is going to be a bigger difference than people think it will. It will offset the difference of the GPU/CPU because reading information off the hard drive has always been a bottleneck. The Xbox will perform more like an advanced PC, but more traditional games and performance with potentially more processing effects going on at one time. When it comes to open world games, especially, where data is constantly streamed from the hard drive, the limits of the Xbox's SSD will be more apparent. PS5 will have pretty much limitless draw distances and detail due to its ability to get mass amounts of data in and out of RAM almost instantly. PS5 is by far the more original and revolutionary console and time will tell. In fact, I think PS5 will inspire new PC architecture that allows developers to do so much more than traditional PC's can.

@Gatorjosh14: I've been thinking the same. 10% flops or whatever doesn't really amount to much when all is said and done, and many GPUs that have been weaker have went on to outperform more powerful GPUs.

The PS5's data throughput is 100% greater. Now that's a noticeable difference. So unless Sony messed up by creating a bottleneck elsewhere, that should prove to be something special in the long run.

@Barighm: The difference between PS4 and Xbox One was less than half a teraflop, but it was enough to make a difference.

@Gatorjosh14: I don’t think it’s going to matter much at all. It certainly doesn’t make up for having massively more power and faster Ram . And Xbox Series storage is already orders of magnitude faster than any games have been designed around before. Doubling that is nice, but hardly as big of a deal.

I’d pick backwards compatibility with less power though if that were the options.

@systemoverload: To each their own I guess, but for me:

130% HD boost >>>>>>>>>> 15% FLOP boost.

In other words: Very noticeable performance > slight side-by-side screen advantage

Current gen (Xbox/PS4)-TFLOPS matters,framerate matters,resolution matters,the design matters

Next gen (XbsX/PS5)-TFLOPS doesnt matter, framerate doesnt matter, resolution doesnt matter, the design doesnt matter

@sladakrobot: We have since learned optimization is far, FAR, FAR more important than anything else. Also, most of us who predicted you could just play all of Xbox's games on PC turned out to be right, so it no longer matters. If you actually truly give a damn about this stuff, you're playing on PC. If you say you do, but play on console, then you can't be taken seriously.

Besides, at this point, who gives a shit? Ghost of Tsushima exists on a base PS4. If you really need your games to look much better than that, you must be crazy shallow or seriously love shiny things.

@sladakrobot: TFLOPS don't scale linearly with fps anymore.

The 3080 is 30 TFLOPS which is about double that of 2080 Ti, but its real world performance is about 20% better.

TFLOPS on its own is misleading as a performance metric and so is Ghz. Nothing is as revealing as an actual benchmark.

For the PS4 Pro I would've MUCH preferred to have a significant processor upgrade instead of a FLOP upgrade. No FPS should have to be played in 30fps. Graphics are forgotten in minutes. Turning my head to shoot and losing all sense of where I am will piss me off until the end of time. It sounds like a lot of new games will have graphics/performance options, which sounds great to me.

Or maybe I'm just happy to play new shit.

@Thuban_23: the jaguar cores are bad architecture. Even the One X has an underwhelming CPU because it too uses the same jaguar cores. They've been taken to their limits. Unless you replace them with a different architecture, which is not something you do in a mid cycle update, you're not going to get much more out of them.

Compute units are important, but more important on pc, or developer, or hacker ect.

In a locked off environment it means nothing, just who has bigger biceps.

@wolfpup7: Ah, because it's being offered to the public duuh at a price point.

What a outrageous statement, "then why do people upgrade", no actually it's a good point, why do they, it constitutes land fill and raises power consumption.

Let's not bother talking about the whys and ins, let's focus on the environmental impact it has right? Right...

I applaud you bases on that comment:

"There are variables in a video game and computations have to be made, it’s not a film"

Maybe this person can use their amazing grasp on the concept and offer Microsoft a olive tree, I mean come on with a comment like that we wouldn't need computers, why even bother with last ten or any console for that regard, this has to be the best comment on the internet.

I applaud you on the amazing comprehension on compute units.

@Crazy_sahara: Sorry I called you on your BS.

You comparing PS5 SSD being Gigabytes per second faster than the XBOX series X SSD to XBOX series X processor being Trillions faster than the PS5 processor.

The Processor and the Storage is two different things.

Don’t forget XBOX series X has some more faster than PS5.

TFlops is good for ray tracing.

Anyways you haven't explained 3 uses of compute units outside of a console.
