The Outer Worlds Gameplay - Solving Crimes In Stellar Bay

We venture around the gritty neon town of Stellar Bay to get to the bottom of a murder. The Outer Worlds will arrive on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 25th.

The Outer Worlds from Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian is one of 2019's most anticipated games--and it's almost here. The role-playing game launches on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and ahead of that, GameSpot got some hands-on time with the game.

In the video above, you can watch us venture around the town of Stellar Bay where we play our best detective to solve a curious murder mystery. This footage was captured on PC.

The Outer Worlds is being published by Grand Theft Auto parent company Take-Two Interactive's indie label, Private Division. The Switch edition is scheduled to release sometime later.

As for Obsidian, the studio was recently acquired by Microsoft. However, development on The Outer Worlds began a long time ago, and as such, it will still release on non-Microsoft platforms.

I've been following this title for some time now and was looking forward to it, but now, I'm not as enthusiastic.

The facial animations seem very early 2000s to me, flat and unconvincing, the mouth movements edge precariously close to "uncanny valley." The voice acting sounds pretty decent, at least.

I will likely try this game the first time it's discounted, but I don't feel it will be worth the premium purchase-price upon release. Who knows, maybe I am mistaken?

@Eryxx: You better be mistaken, or Im gonna be bummed. Im super hyped for this but... I cant deny my eyes or ears either, the game has a very notable jankyness to it. FPS combat has never been Obsidian's strong suit, I think thats something even most hardcore fans like myself can agree on. In these gameplay videos the gunplay looks very dated and clunky.

Animations as you mentioned are also noticeably mediocre, not just facial but the melee and combat animations. The humor feels off too from the few jokes Ive seen from the videos, Obsidian is usually good with that.

Considering the game was like a month from launch when this gameplay was recorded, its not unreasonable to assume it was using a build that is basically the final game. These videos are not encouraging, but Im praying that it will at least be 7/10 good.

If they are using Unreal 4, I don't get why they chose to copy Gamebryo's facial animation rig.
They should have tried something different and set themselves apart from Bethesda. Would have done some good in the comparison.
Hope the game is good though.

@igroku: 100% agreed. So glad I saw this, not something I will play.

Very, very bad combat at 5:09 marker in the video.

@masta-dynamic: I think the combat here was a bit jarring because of the AR the player was using in close proximity to the targets with zooming in, should have used a shotgun or pistol, or even melee. If you want a longer combat video to better judge overall, watch this:

I think it looks good myself. Looking forward to playing this game :)

@openmind23: Ok. Watched it. Did you???

What was that at the 1:37 marker??? An explosion with Xbox 360 graphics????

It's horrid. No excuses, it's not the game engine.

At 2:02 until 2:09 .... Nyoka awful shooting .... there are thousands of gameplay they could show, but why show shooting through a wall???

It's a copy/paste from Fallout Vegas coding. Nothing about this is good.

This is not the 360 generation of 2006. That entire 7 seconds is completely awful and should have never been showcased.

Marker 2:33 until 2:40 ... awful ... again ... this is a pattern.

Marker 4:50 has just pathetic melee fighting animations. So bad it's cut at 5:00

All the NPC conversations seem archaic in style, very old 360 style.

The exploring actually seems FUN and solid .... that is until combat at 10:10 marker and then it goes back to crappy combat, that red shooting looks absolutely horrid. Just horrid. Stop showcasing that crap.

Marker 12:08 more AI shooting through a corner wall.

The sky looked NICE at 12:26 if that's something good to say.

16:40 has more awful explosions in combat.

If you still like this game that's great. There's lots of reasons to not like this copy/paste game with outdated gameplay.

Funny thing I have Game Pass which includes Outer Worlds, and I still won't play this.

I was looking forward to a competitor to Bethesda, but this game isn't it.

It's a copy cat afraid to try something new.

@masta-dynamic: I think its highly unrealistic to assume its copy-pasted from New Vegas. You do realize NV is like what, a decade old?

If you have gamepass and the game is free, its also a bit unreasonable to write it off and just decide its garbage without playing it. Just my opinion! But I do share your overall sentiment that the gameplay videos aren't exactly flattering. It looks a bit rough, but Obsidian's strong suit has never been FPS combat.

New Vegas had terrible shooting, but it was still an amazing game, lets hope the same thing happens here.

@masta-dynamic: I did watch the whole video I linked and thought it looked fine. Sure, some other games have better graphics and some have similar gameplay, but i'm ok with that as long as it's my type of game / genre.

I'm sorry you don't like the looks of it, hope you enjoy something else on the horizon :)

Sucks this game used to have grenades/throwables.

The devs took em out in the final version.

@nikolistary: after seeing the "explosions" in current gameplay video from weapons, I think I see why they took out grenades/throwables.

The explosions are awful, flat, and outdated. No excuses, its just awful.

@masta-dynamic: Yeah, my friend worked on this game and said to brace for graphical and mechanical subpars.

He left Obsidian a while back. Said the bosses are super stubborn and old school. He hated the NPC design where you're locked into a convo like Fallout 3/NV. It's definitely a budget title, I'm already expecting the worst. But I have nothing else similar to New Vegas (my favorite game) and Fallout 4 and 76 sucked so it's better than nothing.

That said, I can totally see this game going on sale in Novemeber/December for around $30, I'll probably get it then.

@Atzenkiller: A buddy of mine worked on the game, said they originally had throwables but later took them out. He was pissed they did it.
