Cool to hear how several indies built their own engines to get the exact gameplay they want. When watching the Unreal sizzle reel video I was thinking about the old days when big or mid PC budget games more often created their own engines and would do new or substantially updated engines for sequels. I know there are tonnes of pros and advantages to common engines, for the developers and the market overall, but sometimes even with a lot of customization you just can't achieve the same results.
