Sony has been in hot water since Fortnite launched on the Switch and people discovered they were locked out from their Epic accounts if they had ever connected them to a PS4. And then if things didn't look bad enough for the company, Nintendo and Microsoft released a Minecraft trailer that was very upfront about playing the survival-crafting game through Switch/Xbox One cross-play.
Yes, Sony is the holdout when it comes to cross-play, but Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Shawn Layden did give players some hope that it could come to the PS4. Speaking to Eurogamer, he said the company is looking into the possibilities of making it happen, and he's confident they'll find a solution that will be "understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."
Several developers have commented or acted on cross-play with the PS4. Last year, Rocket League developer Psyonix said that all the work is done to make PS4 cross-play work; it just needs Sony to give the thumbs up. On top of that, Fortnite was temporarily connecting PS4 and Xbox One players together, though Epic Games later called it "an error."
John Smedley, the ex-president of Daybreak Game Company (formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment), commented on the situation on Twitter: "...when I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money. They didn't like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a PlayStation. Simple as that. Dumb reason, but there it is."
It's unclear whether Sony will actually go through and accept cross-play. Layden's comment certainly leaves open the possibility, but it's not concrete enough to believe it's coming. We discuss everything about this situation in today's episode of GameSpot Daily.
