Remnant: From The Ashes Is A Post-Apocalyptic Shooter With Shades Of Bloodborne

The new Wasteland world as well as solo and co-op play are shown off in Remnant: From the Ashes, which will release August 20 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Coming from the developers of the Darksiders series, Remnant: From The Ashes delves further into the conceit of exploring a post-apocalyptic Earth. Though it's similar to the Gunfire Studios' series focusing on the adventures of the four horsemen, Remnant goes for a more tactical, RPG-driven experience--one that can be played many times over with friends. We recently had the chance to go hands-on with Remnant, venturing into its randomly generated dungeons, and collecting tons of loot for our characters.

You and a group of other players can partner-up and take on quests, venturing further into some of the new world's most dangerous areas. During your dungeon runs--taking place in ruined cities, deserts, or even unearthed ancient ruins--you'll acquire loot, strengthen your character, and take on a variety of different beasts with close-range weapons and jury-rigged firearms pieced together from scrap. You'll even find new pieces of armor, some of which look like they would fit in well in From Software's Bloodborne. This formula seems pretty standard fare for a loot driven action-RPG, but what's interesting about Remnant is that it has some undeniable influences from the Souls series.

In the gameplay video above, we dive into two of Remnant's locations and face off against some fearsome enemies. During our playthrough, we got to explore a variety of different places in the Rhom Wasteland, unearthing all the resources and horrors therein. Progression through these various areas takes a decidedly Souls-esque approach, however. While exploring, you'll encounter safe havens that allow you to rest up. But as most Souls fans expect, the world state is reset, and most enemies you've previously slain will return. If you get taken out by any enemies, then you'll respawn back at your previous rest point.

What makes Remnant particularly engaging is how it blends this hardcore approach with the loot grind of an action-RPG. This style is evident in the combat, which uses third-person shooting mechanics, allowing you to quickly dodge an enemy attack and fire shots off with your weapons. Death can set you back in several ways, which creates a feeling of tension that's felt in even the minor combat encounters. Still, you have several to buff and augment your character, allowing to handle the more challenging runs.

Set for release on August 20 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, Remnant: From The Ashes has an interesting take on the dungeon-run, which will be seeing more updates well-after launch. For more on Remnant: From The Ashes, be sure to check out Aaron and David's impressions from their hands-on time.
