actually, cam, not everything you said was entirely true i think. back when i was playing WoW, i used to hold on to items i no longer needed, simply because i was emotionally attached to them. Like "oh, i can't toss my paladin T0 set, i had such a good time with friends whilst wearing it and it was such a pain to get"

Collecting loots matters because it highly adds to the replay value.

Dopamine Rush

I don't get a dopamine rush from rummaging, scavenging, and collecting stuff in video games.

They break the F~L~O~W of the game. Collecting stuff in the game should be kept to a minimum and should be easy, e.g. like what was done in FUSE.

Of course, I'll collect what's there because I don't want to miss out. The fear of missing out or losing out is a huge psychological motivator. Of course no one wants to miss out on what the game is offering or on the upgrades needed to succeed or play much better.

I hate scavenging for crap in video games. for example, I love inFAMOUS, but I can't stand collecting all those damn blast shards.

I go loot crazy when I don't feel *quite* powerful enough to beat the game, or *quite* powerful enough to be competitive, or I don't *quite* have the right look to match the superhero version of myself I enjoy pretending to be in these fantasy games. If I find that the loot is too crappy or expensive and I need to start farming, I give up on a game. If I find that the loot is making me OP I get bored of the game. There's a sweet-spot where the game keeps giving me just enough loot to keep the challenges fun but not enough to make them boring. I got bored of pretty much every MMORPG I've ever tried because sooner or later they got that curve wrong and it turned into a grind.

On a different but related note, I'd love to hear your answer to another question: Are pay-to-win, micro-transaction, random reward games aimed at children ethical?

Replaying it from scratch on PS4. I consider Diablo to be close to the most perfect game ever (not just for the loot). The challenges are great, the hardcore is awesome and adrenaline pumping at times. Getting the equipment sets is always cool to get. the randomness of location gives reason to replay, the randomness of champions gives the jolt of gaming we need and I did mention the loot? I have loved the gaame ever since the very first one on PC. the 360 taught me how much fun co-op can truly be.

I will love new games when the good games come, but I will always at times get back to Diablo every now and then, even when all the challenges have been met (with a regular tour through Minecraft to cleanse the pallet).

@wowwow27 The "Vanilla" game you purchased does not have Act 5 (Reaper of souls), No adventure mode after completing story mode, No bounties, or a better loot system.

I love collecting loot so I can sell it for real life money. Turning WOW gold into real life money for years helped me pay for the sub. I also was able to sell an item I got from collecting cards from Steam to get an item worth $30+ and sold it finally this year. Loot is wonderful! Eh most of the time loot is wonderful as when I played WOW I hated hearing the awful "Inventory is full" comment though over and over and over again. :O

Great show. I remember Diablo being the reason I begged my parents to hook up a dail up modem haha, my first online multiplayer experience. Spent many hours looking for " godly plate of the whale" or whatever ridiculous name that armor had.

Who is "we"?

I enjoyed the story line well enough, and as always the CG cutscenes were great, but overall I was disappointed with Diablo 3. So my collecting of loot was pretty well limited to what I thought other future characters could use (never mind the incredible violation of the fourth wall) and I ended up not playing enough characters to even use the loot.

The game is horribly repetitive with practically no replay value. Compare it to a game like Skyrim, which I'm now playing for the umpteenth time, and I STILL discover quests and dungeons I haven't found before.

Instead D3's replay value is supposed to come from... what? Doing the same levels over and over with a lame and tired carrot-on-a-stick equipment progression? It's not even an MMO where that strategy can be bearable on account of constant competition between players and the introduction of the next big dungeon.

D3 isn't that much different in scope than D2, but the bar has been raised since then. An RPG that lacks diversity, choices, and replayability, is going to be a major let down in this gamer's opinion. Especially when you compare D3 to even release-day WoW and all the progression paths and side-quests you had to choose from there.

Yeah I've put in at least 200 hours in skyrim, still discovering new locations, quests, and items. That game is insane.

Another great reality check Cam . But if you ask a resident of st lious why collecting loot is so much fun holy cow you get an entirely different answer than this here. Collecting loot is fun because it makes your characters progression more tangible .

I have a sword that's legendary orange, and it's glowing green, and has poison damage, and buko stats, and it makes my shaft hard.

I'm like way stoked about just getting getting my arcane missiles into ice shards, and a new whirlwind AEO seeking, but not really seeking like meandering, attack too. I'm not sure if that counts.

My experience is deadfull, i always clutter the inventory to fullness becouse i keep items that i may need, or becouse i rather like this look even though its weak but when something come up i will quickly change to the better start item, and potions are a curse.....i keep saving them in case i need, prefering to die and restart and end the game with so much my hero/heroine could open an apotechary after they retire from saving the world

i reckon that if you would introduce a loot system into the work space of a company, production would be up in no time. You managed to deliver the Mail of Insight? Here's a free snack.. You defeated the giant called Project Analysis? Here's a gift card... or a weekend for two in a hotel.

@KerrinScott @Talis12 Thats pretty handy.. I have +2 in Sneak to steal office supplies easier, +1 in Crafting for better pots of coffee and +6 in Agility so my stapler does more damage. My Pants of Sloth sets back my Speed to -2 however :(

I have wanted to play Diablo for a while, but never took the dive on the PC version or ps3. I decided to give it a try and went out to get it on launch day. I was close to not scoring because it was the last one they had for the x1. I have been playing off and on since. I admit looting is fun. It is our natural instincts to hunt and Diablo makes it fun. It's going to get a lot more interesting Tuesday when Madden comes. I will be divided on which to play.

basing a game around loot seems like a cop out. Make a game with great mechanics, story line, good AI, well thought design....or just have tons of loot?

Diablo and just about every MMORPG does that. Everything is based on loot rather than on the gameplay itself.

Hoping to see a MMORPG where developers don't focus on loot but people will find fun to play regardless.

when you start a game with a player level 1 no armor and with 0 gold/money you would collect every garbage and hoping to find good staff to help you out through the game specially when you are playing on (nightmare/insane) difficulty spearing you from spending the gold/money that you hardly find/loot, but when you reach with your player a current level with very good protection you would be very selective to pick up loots and some time you would leave them where they are..but it is still fun to loot :)

@ferna1234 Seriously? You can't figure out if it's better than what you've got? Do numbers not have meaning you, or are the green and red arrows not dumbing it down enough?

I have always said that the average gamer (I include myself in this) would spend more time comparing for example swords in Diablo, WoW or Skyrim than they would spend comparing trousers in an actual clothes shop. You could draw many parallels between these behaviours I reckon.
