I don't find Skylanders nor Amiibo's appealing.

I know there's been a fair few articles surrounding the topic posted up here but you should have made this video about Amiibo's, and how the pursuit to collect them all either drive peoples mad or turn them into complusive hoarders! Perhaps a follow up video?

I've never heard of Skylanders before this. I just watched it out of curiousity because I thought it must be some british toy or a hoax, or something like that.

Anyway, there was one error near the start of the video where you talk about how people are attracted to toys with childlike features. That actually has been shown to vary with age. Babies and younger children actually are attracted to quite the opposite -- to adult features. In fact, it used to be that dolls were designed to have more adult features, possibly for this very reason. The problem is that adults buy the toys for babies, and THEY are certainly attracted by more childlike features.

So you were PARTLY right, at least.

One other thing I'll say -- while I agree that childlike features tend to make toys 'cuter', I find it deeply creepy when I see childlike character graphics in certain types of games and animation meant to represent adults.

Actually evolution has nothing to do with the facts that people find babies adorable. That is a trait hardwired into our being by God.

@khankalili@EliOli: ROFL! Fail what my friend? I realize one of the main tenets of the religion of Atheism is to claim no proof of what's obvious. The only thing I've failed at, is to participate in this game Atheists like to play. You want to see proof, open your eyes. You don't want to see proof. Keep your eyes closed. The choice is your's to make.

Take care friend. Peace...

I'm a fully grown adult and I find the game charming and entertaining and the multiple characters allow you some flexibility. Not a ton of it, as the games are quite linear, but you get the feeling you can take care of things your way. I can't say I harbor any emotional attachment to any of the figures (except for one, but that's because it was given to me by a good friend who isn't around anymore)

I can see why people love this stuff. I have a friend and a brother that love to collect it. I don't quite understand it, even after this video. I like cartoon characters as much as the next person, but I don't see the appeal to buying action figures to make them come to life in my game.

The way I see 3D as actual action figures, performing actual actions I tell them to with a controller or keyboard is enough for me. I don't need to amass a wall shelf for an assorted amount of plastic that already exists in other possibilities in other games. I would MUCH rather buy a new game or book and experience a whole new story in a whole new setting than waste that same pocket change on waste of space.

this kind of stuff is certanly inteded for very young people but the fact it still sells show how his idea isn't entirely wrong, a lot of people like those kind of figures expecially young ones, also it's very very very widely known that if you make a movie with a super famous actor wich evryone likes the chances that you're going to watch that movie will be much higger if that actor wasn't there, it kind of makes me think of this classic thing, if somebody you know were to ask you a favor like going to buy something for him nothing special you'd say maybe yes or no, if it was someone very very important and special to you to ask to do the same thing for the same guy you know but instead of having this guy ask you to buy this thing it would be that very special person to ask you to do it, I think the reaction many times over will be quite different, the explanation is because it was somebody who you like/respect that asked you to do it, so in the ends you've been charmed (=. on these kind of things it's the same, make the thing just enough lovely and evryone's gonna love it too !!!

Freud is hardly a reliable source when it comes to psychology. He mainly did a bunch of speculating without ever backing it up and most of his theories have since been proved incorrect. =)

Who actually buys these?

Is it mostly kids under 12 years old or do teens / adults actually buy these for themselves?

I'm not judging if you buy them, good for you. Keep spending your money on what you enjoy. I am genuinely interested in what age groups are buying these that got Skylanders to be worth 3 billion.

@GH05T-666: I bought a handful or so of them. The games are genuinely fun, if a little childish. (I'm an adult male for the record) My nephew (he's 8) loves the game.

never heard of them... im 33yrs though... not sure why grown men my age would play around with big headed pokemon-like toys ....or play games about them for that matter...

you are over-analyzing this... might i add psychology, is not an exact science.

and in my personal opinion, not a science at all...

Its just that this guy should learn from Danny how to engage the audience better. and altogether come up with better topics.

Huh. This explains part of my video game collection. My justification is that I'll be a father some day and will be required to show my kids what good games are. Or so I'm telling myself.

F'n Freud, that guy was so full of "unresolved childhood issues". Hard to take his stuff seriously on the rare occasions I bump into it. Anyway nice vid, but aren't there a ton of other similar products with the same qualities?
