3 days ago I think I played Vanishing Of Ethan Carter. So amazing game. Totally worth playing. Its not long only 4-6 hours. So pretty much you can finish it in one sit. But it was so worth. It was really long time when I finished game and thought about how it was best hours spend in gaming. And great episode. Thanks for telling how it was actually made and thanks for giving name of the software. I should try it.

can there be photo-realistic games? answer yes, but no.

Its likely game worlds will reach that peak, but character models, not so much. I dont think its a case of uncanny valley, but more the complexities of the human form are impossible to actually capture.

How the game is so photorealistic ? simple it was developed for pc only, not multiplatafom to drag it down, can you guys see what consoles can do now ? yeah, thats what we COULD had done o pc 4 years ago, FOUR YEARS can you imagine the power we hold on our pc right now that is untapped ? Just go see nvidia tech demos presentation and see how much power is wasted, then go try and play a multiplataform game that struggle on ultra becouse its not "optimized"

@razor_rj i agree in some respects, now with wireless pads available for the pc, you know a few years late, but non the less, with superior mechanics in every way, i do feel i should have a pc in my front room not my ps4. oh hang on iv gotta spend 800 quid to begin with and continuously upgrade my graphics card(s) every 6 months, not to mention the exclusives we get on consoles that pc's don't. but if you have the money and want to have the best gaming experience (on some titles the pc gets) why not!!! and try not to take this too personally please :)

@itchyflop @razor_rj you dont need to upgrade every six months, in fact most pc owners have the same base hardware for 4 years (wich seem to be the cicle for new consoles or at least should be)

What gets changed in 1 or 2 years is the graphic cards, but only enthuasiasts, i read people with a 580 still run current games with good performance and that card is what ? almost 5 years old ? its a great card and will only be phased out due to imcompatibility with next DX, but that is a ruse, DX is juist a software, those cards could be upgraded via driver to acept that archteture if the card makes wanted, but obvioulsy they want to move units, so all their marketing is how awesome that new card is, and then we dont use 60% of that potential becouse consoles dont let us, but when a game comes and is made with pc only in mind it blows thje mind

@razor_rj @itchyflop Youre gonna have to change your graphics card every 2 years at least enthusiast or not if youre playing new games its gonna be necessary and youre also gonna have to upgrade RAM every 5-8 Years but thats not so bad.

Bit of a silly question, Crysis came out in 2007 and that still looks bloody amazing. Very clever how the developers of vanishing of Ethan Carter managed that.

Maybe photogrammetry is the way to go, seems incredible and pretty basic and quicker, the only bad thing about it is if you wanted to make a game on say.... Jupiter, if you haven't got pictures of it you'd have to use a lot of experimenting, that's a good thing though isn't it, experimenting =)

I'll look forward to 'relationship with zombies' video, after watching the first episode of the newest The Walking Dead I can tell you now, I'd prefer to be around zombies than to trust other humans, at least if things went wrong and you were around zombies you'd know what's coming, cowardly and sinister scum of the Earth.

Technically it would be a game in Jupiter and not on Jupiter so that would make it easier since all you would need is good volumetric gases and particle effects.

@Johny_47 That's the third time I've seen someone suggest setting a game on Jupiter. I know it's just randomly thrown out there but it's weird, Jupiter doesn't have a surface.

@pongley @Johny_47 Doesn't need to have a surface, could have a game like Hydro Thunder set on it, instead of usin' boats, use hover cars ; )

It's probably got a core or a crust though so it could be a game set under...gas or liquid, instead of underground =P

@Johny_47 I suppose if you were playing as some alien life form that developed on Jupiter. Carl Sagan popularised the idea of life forms that could survive in the upper atmosphere of gas giants.
As for the core, it just transitions smoothly from gas to liquid to solid. It's also incredibly high pressure. Gas giants are one step below stars. If Jupiter had a bit more mass it would be a brown dwarf.

I guess the next step would be to combine these photorealistic graphics with photorealistic gameplay.

Wow, stunning. I think one of the big reasons why the game looks so good is the colors. Taking pictures of the environment lets the creators use exact colors with no guessing or over-saturating. It's like the difference between drawing a face with a model and without one. I think that certain colors are found in the real world far more often than others, and using specific pallets can make a game look really realistic even in an unrealistic setting. I hope this kind of work keeps showing up in other games because that is really impressive.

@oldtobie Although time of day would be a huge pain in the ass to combat as far as getting all the colors to match up just right.

Photogrammetry is only useful in specific cases. In TVOEC's case, the entire setting is natural and deliberately realistic. not every game strives for realism and realism is certainly not an express-way towards beauty. I think photogrammetry is just a relevant tool, but nothing more, it will not and should not replace "traditional" methods of modelling, texturing, and designing.

Our obsession with graphics is what is killing gaming. If companies would just focus on the right stuff, we would get so many more great games every year.

@zeldafan195 Curse us humans and our appreciation of beauty. Why can't we just throw aesthetics away?

Oh yeah, because it's hardwired into our brains and it's the way we live and that will never change. Get over it buddy, a pretty game can evoke in us something that an ugly game will never be able to. Why do you think art exists?

@oldtobie what u r saying is misguiding, @zeldafan195 isnt talking about throwing aesthetics away, if we are still ontopic here, he is talking about this photorealism deal. and he makes a good point you do not need ultrarealistic graphic s to make a good game or to enjoy one.

have you played Killzone Shadow Fall? the game looks ridiculously great, but that doesnt save it from being a bland experience. I still have a blast when I go back and play oldschool games like Zelda a link to the past or the minish cap, double dragon, final fight, chrono trigger, mario world 1 & 2 and Command and Conquer Red Alert, starcraft and warcraft. and the last thing those game have is good graphic. just saying.

@simon1812 @oldtobie That doesn't mean it should be actively avoided either. The games you mentioned didn't have more funding for their gameplay departments than games that put resources into graphics. The two aren't mutually exclusive.

@zeldafan195 It's not an obsession, just an expectation.

The market needs to move. If games didn't improve their graphics, there would be little reason to release new hardware, and in turn little reason to buy new hardware. Just about every industry relies on you buy a new thing every few years, be it smartphones, consoles, computers, cars, whatever. You're going to be getting a new one every few years.

If graphics didn't improve, console manufacturers are going to go out of business. They won't be able to sell you a next console, because your current one will be able to do everything it will ever need to do.

@zeldafan195 There are more great games every year. Gaming is thriving like never before. Why do you say gaming is dying? There are more and more gamers every year and since digital distribution became viable there are hundreds if not thousands of great games every year. It has gotten harder to find the great games among so many game releases but that just comes with a quickly growing medium.

Also on photogrammetry replacing traditional methods... like you mentioned just before, the artists spent a year creating the world of Assassin's Creed Unity, and it's a world that no longer exists in real life so it can't be created using photogrammetry. So I think that's an area where traditional methods are still useful, in creating worlds that you can't get in real life.

Autodesk 123D Catch lets you create 3d objects/textures from a series of pictures. It's also free (don't know about comertial license)

This is a great technique but in games, youll still need to reuse assets and tile textures to reduce memory in large scenes.
