PlayStation Classic Vs. SNES Classic | Versus - Versus

Sony's PlayStation Classic releases next month, bringing 20 fan-favorite PS1 games to a miniature version of the 90s console. It follows a trend of releasing smaller versions of old consoles, primarily set by Nintendo with its NES and SNES Classic devices. The impending release of Sony's attempt got us thinking, so we sat down to chat about the respective advantages and drawbacks of the PlayStation Classic and Super NES Classic.

First Will Potter and Oscar Dayus discuss the systems themselves: the display options, the feel of the controller, how it all works. The discussion then shifts to talk about the games, and which line-up is better--Rayman, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, and co., or Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Super Mario World, and other Nintendo classics? Even though the SNESC is lacking two of its best titles Donkey Kong Country 2 and Chrono Trigger, it still beats the PSC no contest.

There is absolutely no comparison. SNES Classic got almost everything right.

FF7 and RE by themselves will probably be console sellers for a big part of the sale numbers.

If they would've dared NOT to include these 2 huge HUGE classics, the consoles would've sticked to the shelves and sales would've been catastrophic...

I might consider getting it for these two titles' sake only!

(Yeah I know I already bought FF7 and RE remakes of any kind 3-4-5 times already...that might be a mental illness, don't judge!)

I think for something as subjective as this it’s going to come down to a few factors. Probably at the top of that list will be the person in questions age. For many gamers born in the 80’s something like the SNES will no doubt be the retro console that hits all those nostalgia buttons.

For those perhaps born in the early 90’s the Playstation mini may more appropriately fill that void.

With that being said I think the games on the SNES mini will have “aged” better than their Playstation counterparts due primarily to the titles offered being more of a 2-D variety.

As much as I love the original Playstation (some of the games offered on the Playstation mini” changed my perspective on gaming, so…) it’s reliance on early 3-D technology (Polygons everywhere!!!) is more likely to be a stumbling block than it’s 2-D counterparts.

Still, both retro consoles are amazing pieces of equipment that recapture a special time in gaming.

TL;DR: The ideal situation would be to get both as there are a multitude of titles on both consoles that have changed the landscape of gaming and as such are worth gamers attention.
