Metro Exodus Takes The Series In A Risky New Direction

We played four hours of 4A's upcoming Metro Exodus on Xbox One, and have a lengthy discussion about the shooter's shift into sandbox survival.

With the upcoming release of Metro Exodus, developer 4A Games brings its shooter series into the realm of sandbox survival. Recently, we got the chance to play through four hours of it, spending our time scavenging, exploring, and crafting weapons in Exodus's Caspian Desert.

In the above video, you can join Tony and Mike as they recount their experiences. While some aspects have them worried, others have them excited for the final release.

For more on Metro Exodus, you can read our in-depth preview of the same desert area, and catch up on 30 minutes of gameplay from our recent preview session. Metro Exodus releases February 15 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Im a bit burnt out with open world survival games tbh, especially after playing Fallout 76. I was hoping this would be like the original games. Loved the claustrophobic atmosphere of the originals. Very un-derated games and Metro 2033 is one of my favourite games of all time. This being more open world and what looks to be set mostly outside has me slightly disapointed.

It's risky. Personally I welcome the change, but I'm hoping for the "survival" portion to be what "light RPG elements" were to open world games that began to become more complex instead of a complete genre shift to something like a DayZ. Like I'm hoping for survival elements, but it's so easy to go overboard and turn a game into something completely unfun with that stuff.

While the dream is a massive open world on the scale of, say, Skyrim or Far Cry or the PUBG map times 20, packed with all manner of encounters, both scripted and random, as NPCs and animals follow their AI routines, and seemingly endless opportunities for exploration and discovery, I'll take what I can get if it gives me even just a tiny taste of what that could be like.

Played the previous games and i never understood the hype for this series. The silent protagonist and cringy semi-russian accents killed it for me.

To each their own i guess.

@bot101101: The games should be played with Russian voices and English subtitles. The only way.

@bot101101: Silent protagonists are almost always the way to go in an atmospheric first person game, like Metro. The Russian accents weren't great, but hopefully Exodus will have the option to go with subs and actual Russian voice.

The thing I'm worried about is the shooting. Metro has always had bad combat mechanics, and I feel like that'll sink a game with a slower, more open pace where you've got a bunch of side content that's largely all combat.

@Mogan:

Yeah i totally agree; combat was not great. Another gripe was the outdated feel the game had when re-released on ps4. It constantly reminded you were playing a game in some way.

Ah well, there is always a chance to be surprised with this new one
