As soon as they said it was always online, even for the single-player campaign, I lost all interest in this. And I was one of the few people who was willing to give this game a chance.

@thedarklinglord: I could not agree more. I understand people hate the game for its pedigree (or lack thereof), but really it's the business practices at work here that I'd call the developers out for. I've heard Destiny fans defend always online for a full price game as tolerable provided that there is a content delivery mechanism on par with MMOs. Somehow, I don't get the impression that was the intention behind this game being online.

@pauls: It's crazy that Microsoft had to completely reverse their stance on 'always online' for their console due to the backlash, yet, little by little, developers are sneaking that crap into their games. While you could argue that stuff like Destiny and The Division are built around a multiplayer experience and, as such, always-online makes some degree of sense - despite the fact that some people might prefer to play alone, which they should be able to do offline - there doesn't appear to be any reason for this single-player campaign to require always-online except as DRM. And Konami is getting away with it because the main focus is on how this isn't a 'real' Metal Gear game, or how it looks like trash, or 'it has zombies and that's lame.'

It's a shame. Nobody seems to care about this game, so they can't be bothered to care about the shady, scumbag business practice at work. And they should care, because sooner or later it's going to impact a game they do care about - like loot boxes, which have become damn near ubiquitous - but once they know they can get away with it, once it's an accepted practice, it'll start showing up in every game. Until it doesn't need to because we've just accepted it and, hell, it might as well be a built-in feature of every console.

introducing the shame who turn out to be no shame, in fact, some kind of hommage to the narrative genius of hideo kojima.

I wonder if you can customize your character, Mr Generic Mcgenericson doesn't appeal to me.

@RogerioFM: Gameplay footage has shown a customization system for character appearance that is presumably like Metal Gear V's Online. That being said I have to wonder given the game's confirmation of always online (presumably to regulate the in-game economy and micro transactions as well) that some of the customization may be accessed through in-game micro transactions. If that does not deter your interest and you'd like to see the customization options in action check out Outsidexbox's game-play footage; they show very briefly a few customization options.

@pauls: The character customization was one of the things that really appealed to me about this game. I didn't really play MGS V online, but I had some fun just playing with the character creator and secretly wished Konami would make a Metal Gear Gaiden where you didn't play as Snake and, instead, got to Saints Row it up a bit by making your own character, complete with options for a couple different voices. If I could craft new outfits and/or there was cosmetic loot that randomly dropped, I would've been way into that, and it would've given me a reason to delve into the multiplayer, because you want to show off the your custom character and your crazy outfit. But then they went and killed the dream with their always-online bullsh*t.
