Shaun,

Did they discuss how they pay their employees? With no corporate structure, no job titles, etc... - how do they decide who gets paid what? Are the employees paid hourly, if so, then how are rates established with no job titles? Do they just get bonuses based on their successful projects? and get nothing if their ideas flop? Their company structure and culture is interesting, I am just curious how payroll is made? Maybe everyone makes the same salary regardless of what they do, and the rest goes to Gabe?

@skeet1964 They have a system of peer assessment. In simple terms, everybody in the company that have any interaction with a specific person decide that person's salary. They are incredibly powerful on Human Resources.

@Eyal-KOKO-Stern @skeet1964 Hmmm, interesting. Is this an "in-the-know" response or just a guess? If this is the way they do it, then obviously it is working, just seems very awkward and subjective to me. Especially with people bouncing around (or rolling their carts) from role to role and project to project, seems like it would be really hard to keep track of who is doing what and how to assess that. Like I said though, obviously it is working, since they are a very successful company and it seems like people want to work there.

@skeet1964 @Eyal-KOKO-Stern I was gonna say, if you go to the hiring section of the valve software website you can download an employee handbook that glosses over most of your questions.

@skeet1964 @Eyal-KOKO-Stern Mostly taken from the Valve new employ handbook (which you can find online and is an authentic Valve document).

When they say you move from project to project with the wheels on desks, it's not really often as it sounds. As an example - Dota 2 is a project. It's being worked on by a ton of people for a lot of time. In most cases you work with the same people for a long period of time, it's not like you change your entire team every 3 weeks you know...

@osirisx3 Yay Naive viewpoint . Wake up boy , industry doesn't work that way . There are always prons and cons , market is run by people not angels . Steam made PC gaming what it is today , without steam there is no Amazon , No distribution power of PC not GOG no DRM free packages by other developers . All of them are here because PC GAMING is here . Kill Steam which you just see as DRM and you've already lost 80% of yearly revenue brought by PC gamers . Your idealism is not going to help here .

This makes so much sense. This is why their products are so great, but they take FOREVER to finish anything.

I've loved Valve as a company all the way back to the original Half-Life. I'm constantly buying things on Steam, most especially during their sales, and haven't found a product by them I didn't love.

With that said, though, I really wish they could tell us something - anything - about the development of the next chapter of Half-Life, whether it's Episode 3 or a full sequel like Half-Life 3. They know full well the fan base that the series has. Yet, they've had time to put out a full sequel to Portal, which released with HL2: Episode 2, and still have given us little word on EP3 or HL3.

This isn't just a "just released HL3, already!" message because they get enough of those. This is more of an, "Are you guys even working on it?" message, along with a, "Could you tell us a little bit about what you're working on regarding the series?" It doesn't even need to be a trailer or anything, just a confirmation that yes, there is something that they're working on. The only thing we've heard from them in recent years regarding it has been (I'm paraphrasing here), "We love the HL series and respect the fans who love it equally," and that's it. An acknowledgement of the game's popularity and nothing else.

Give us SOMETHING, Valve. That's all we, the fans, are asking for (or at least, I'm asking for).

@RedWave247 What you said makes me wonder how does this big popularity of the HL series, that nearly guarantees the success of a sequel (something pretty rare in the videogame business), match their will to give costumers what they ask for, that they claim in the video? Is it that the costumer isn't the only important thing at Valve but also doing something that attracts the interest of their own workforce? After all what job wouldn't become repetitive with time and hence less interesting to do?

@RedWave247 It has surfaced even episode 4 images, but it was all scrapped. Rumors have said that Half-life 3 is being a dificult development, beacuse they dont't want to make just another game. I imagine that Valve is building a new engine, and we will only see any future Valve games in it. Once they release info on the engine, we'll see some new games. Like HL2 with Source. We are seeing a new generation ahead, and I bet it won't take long for us to see what's coming.

@edussz @RedWave247 Given that HL2 was one of the first Source engine games, I'd say it's a likely possibility that this new engine is being built with HL3 in mind. Not definite, but I'd say it's likely.

For the love of gamers and the people that put you where you are standing Valve, please, focus on making videogames instead of making too much effort on Steam.

Where are the women? Doesn't bode well if an industry-leading company like Valve can't support diversity in the workplace.

@Frankenstrat247 I agree that there are not many women in the industry but I think it's mature enough now for that to change. I would expect a company like Valve to be able to use its position and financial success to take some leadership in progressing the industry forward in such areas. I'm just surprised that they didn't take this opportunity to show they were interested in doing so.

@Ultimo diversity for the sake of diversity is basically the problem with most over the top anti racists, feminists

Im sure if any wanted to work there they could. they just either don't or aren't in the vid... seriously get over yourself
